Road test of YamahaXSR 125 2024 A pocket roadster with big dreams?

Naked

Our tester's opinion on the XSR 125 from 2024

XSR 125 2024 test drive

With its neo-retro styling and elegant lines, the Yamaha XSR 125 is a motorcycle that leaves no one indifferent. But how does it perform on the road? After a test ride on a variety of roads, from Rennes to Sarzeau, via La Gacilly and Rochefort-en-Terre, and spared from the rain forecast for that day, here are my impressions.

Simplicity for pleasure?

Right from the outset, the XSR 125's light weight - 140 kg on the scales - is evident. This gives it appreciable agility, especially in tight bends and on small country roads, making it an excellent tourer. For a small rider (1.70 m and 68 kg in my case), the riding position is comfortable, keeping the back almost straight, so I felt at ease without any constraints.

It has to be said that for larger riders, the Yamaha XSR 125 could present a few challenges in terms of comfort and riding position, although this doesn't seem to apply to everyone. The posture would seem less natural and a little more tiring for taller riders or those with a more imposing build.

For beginners and more experienced riders alike, the XSR 125 looks like a good toy, offering intuitive handling... Although, as an inexperienced rider, I have to admit that I didn't try to push the bike to its limits, and the famous fear stripe on the tires is still clearly visible! But that's also where the charm of this bike lies: it invites you to go for a ride, rather than for extreme performance.

The XSR 125's neo-retro credentials

photo-yamaha-xsr125-bleuIn blue, the bike is worth a look!

The aesthetics of the XSR 125 are successful, with a neo-retro look that will appeal to those who attach importance to design. Despite this, some might criticize it for looking a little "junk", but we'll get to that later. LED lights add a modern touch to this vintage ensemble. On the downside, the speedometer is dark and reflections in bright sunlight sometimes make it illegible. It's not impossible that it has several backlight modes, but I haven't had the chance to try them out.

So, after a four-hour ride spaced by a lunch break, I can say that the saddle does the job perfectly.

The beating heart of the XSR 125

Beneath its retro looks, the XSR 125 hides a 15 hp engine, which is plenty for a 125cc. However, to get the most out of it, you need to rev it up, as it only really reveals its potential from 7,000 rpm upwards. The VVA (Variable Valve Actuation), which activates at 7,400 rpm, offers a (very) slight second wind, sufficient to maintain a cruising speed of around 105-110 km/h, no more. This is ideal for small roads, let's say. The bike quickly climbs to 90 km/h and starts to stall above 100 km/h, but that's no problem, as it's clearly not designed for high top speeds.

Oh yes, and you can feel the road... Vibrations are noticeable at high revs, especially in the footwell, but nothing too disturbing. This doesn't prevent you from keeping a good feeling, even (especially!) in curves.

The ideal companion for exploring.

alongside the Kawasaki Ninja 7 Hybrid...

So, there you have it: the XSR 125 offers good looks and a certain class, true to Yamaha's image. However, the finish leaves something to be desired, with elements such as exposed cables spoiling the overall impression. At €5,000, the XSR 125 is positioned at the top end of the 125cc range, a price partly justified by Yamaha's reliability, but nonetheless high - too high. Especially when compared with other models such as the MT 125, which doesn't differ greatly in terms of performance.

In town and on small roads, the XSR 125 is particularly at ease. Thanks to its lightness and agility, it weaves its way through city traffic with ease, while offering a definite pleasure to ride on country roads.

In short, the Yamaha XSR 125 is an excellent choice for young adults or those taking their 125 license. For a tester accustomed to big cubes, this bike won't disappoint either. It's not just a 125, but an invitation to ride, a good toy that combines style, riding pleasure and reliability. Nevertheless, its high price and certain shortcomings in terms of comfort and finish could hold some back. These aspects have not prevented the XSR 125 from quickly becoming one of the best-selling 125s, and for good reason: it has a lot to offer.

I'm doing 1'89 and it's my first bike. It's the Legacy version and it's spectacular. It handles very well in town and on the road, goes up to 110 without a problem and has plenty of power at high revs. It's a delight to corner on the freeway in 4th gear and play with the throttle. I bought it to see if the motorcycle world appealed to me before embarking on the A2, and it was a triumphant entrance. Rating : 5/5

I've had it for two years and have covered 15,000 km with it. Nothing but happiness. It's a Legacy, and attracts a lot of attention. I modified the exhaust for a Leovince and, above all, put a saddle on it, it's a life-changer. 408 km before running out of fuel and 124 km/h on the gps. What more could you ask for? Rating : 4/5

I have one year and 5000 kms with this bike. It's a real pleasure to ride, easy to handle and responsive. The performance is good enough for non-motorway use and it's a lot of fun to ride. The services are easy to do and the manual is full of good advice (I'm a mechanic, but it's within the reach of any patient and careful DIYer). I even went on vacation on the back roads this summer with it, and it was just so much fun. I often read that the meter is a bit weak in the sun, but it's originally set to the lowest setting out of 3 possible, at maximum, no worries. The faults I notice are the visible wires, not very classy and not worthy of a bike of this range, but also the little frustration when a car squeezes you to the side to let you pass, thinking that the bike is more than a 125, and that you're too little to overtake safely in terms of power (my ideal bike would have around 25/30hp). I'd like Yamaha to bring out an XSR300, which would have just that little bit more power for this kind of situation and to hang on to the 120 on the freeway (I'm in Switzerland) but which would keep the 125's aesthetics, I don't like the design of the 700 and 900 which are too far removed from the "standard Japanese motorcycle" design of the 70s. after 3 relics, a DTMX, a DTRE and a 1983 cagiva sxt, it's a real pleasure to ride this 125 with 4000kms on the odometer. it's with a lot of regret that i parted with my vintage cagiva with the arrival of the technical inspection and the absence of parts to make it safe. that's why i opted for a newer bike that i can count on to get to work. Frankly, I'm not disappointed, it's got a nice retro look, it responds well, it's got equipment like ABS and it sounds great. I have no regrets other than the Ar suspension, and it's still a 125, otherwise it's pure happiness, heaven on earth Rating : 5/5
French Rowhider Model 2022
A bike I picked up during my A2 training. I've had it for 2 weeks and already ridden it over 850km. Before I bought it, I'd tried an XSR with 1200km on the clock, so it was already broken in. It's a very nice bike, with the volume of a 300cc: it's very rewarding. In a nutshell: - The LED lighting is very effective, and riding at night isn't a problem - The handling is impeccable, and the tires quite satisfactory. However, the damping is firm, very firm, much firmer than that of a Honda CB500F, for example. This contributes to roadholding to the detriment of comfort: riding the bike for more than 1h30 in a row is hard on the posterior, and investing in a comfort saddle is highly recommended if you're going far - As for the engine, mine is still in the final stages of running in, so we're not yet totally objective, even if the exhaust note is pleasant, 1st and 2nd are very short, and you find yourself in 3rd as soon as you hit 30km/h. The engine is punchy and already nice between 6000 and 7500RPM. At 7500RPM, the VVA opens wide and the engine changes its voice to become furious right up to the ignition switch. On the bike I'd tested, 90km/h was reached quickly, and acceleration lanes were never a problem. I got up to 110km/h without trying to lie down on the tank or bang on the throttle. In short, a nice engine that doesn't vibrate much, with a decent noise level and plenty of power to blend into traffic without struggling to keep up with the cars. Rating : 4/5

the XSR 125 is a beautiful bike. I compare it to the late SUZUKI van van for its looks. Its engine power also lives up to my expectations for a 125. On the negative side : The seat is too thin, making it very uncomfortable after a few hours of riding, and the insufficient lighting of the speedometer is a problem when riding in direct sunlight. Please, given the retail price, please, YAMAHA engineers, correct these 2 major faults and the 5 stars will be deserved. Thank you. Rating : 4/5
French Nad71 Model 2021
I fell in love with it when I walked into the Yamaha dealership. With its retro look and yellow color, it's impossible not to notice it. I've been riding an xbr 125 for several years and it's nothing like it. The weight distribution, the look, the finish, the tire width. It's got it all. And its engine .... Smooth shifting. No regrets whatsoever. Rating : 5/5

XSR LEGACY
I got it back yesterday, after 100 km
Accustomed to my unbridled DTR, I was a little worried about performance, but in the end I wasn't. The engine is very elastic and willing
The engine is very elastic and willing, with torque at all revs
The controls are smooth and it's a pleasure to ride it through one corner after another
The build quality is beyond reproach, and the riding position is very pleasant despite my 1.87m height, and with my wife behind me (1.70m) we're both very comfortable.
The only complaints are that the rear shock absorber is very (too) firm, and the speedometer lighting is weak, even at maximum
Ideal bike for beginners or experienced riders like me who don't want to take their driving test
and what a face ;)

I picked it up on Saturday, it's my first bike, I was going to start on an Archive but all the bikers I spoke to advised me to get something safe and reliable, so I went for the xsr! And what a slap in the face for a 125, I was lucky enough to get a red one with a discount on accessories (the vintage bubble) so don't hesitate to negotiate, on the road during the test it's a real bomb, I was able to push the machine from cold without a care up to 110 without forcing it, super agile and what a look, my father fell for the 700 at the same time even if the 2-stroke bothers him haha I recommend it to you straight away! Delivery on Tuesday, can't wait to get on the road. I don't like the color yellow in general, but on this 125 I think it's so hot, it brings out its vintage side. I'm so happy and I've already got my eye on the 700 for next year Rating : 5/5

I totally agree with everything I've just read
In 2021, how can anyone come up with such colors when you see Asian models that are too classy and what's being done elsewhere
Huge disappointment: this is my first bike and the gray leather seat was a dream ... 0 for this choice!

It's the first day, too beautiful in red, I'm so happy! Rating : 4/5
Personally, I also thought the colors were way below those of the XSR 155s
I would have loved to find a gray one with a brown seat... then once in the dealership with the yellow one in front of me: it's just as beautiful.

The color combinations are so ugly, I think it's better to get it in full black.. Rating : 3/5
Well, I'll leave a message too, in case Yamaha's marketing department comes by. In grey and a brown saddle, I'd jump on it without a second thought. But now, I think it's going to be complicated. Rating : 5/5

I'm looking forward to it, but I totally agree with Engin, what a disappointment in terms of color, I could already see myself on a brown saddle, gray tank. The Yam guy who approved these colors is a weirdo! So maybe I'll go for Fantic's Fast Track... Too green Rating : 5/5

Here it is at last, but what are these colors? MBK, make them for us, as a minimum or as an option with their original colors. They were much more beautiful and desirable. Rating : 5/5
French Engin Model 2021
Nice bike but it's a shame that the colors and booklets are different from the Asian xsr 155... I loved the white and red which really reminded me of the colors of 80's motorcycles like the rd... And also the gray with brown seat... The colors for France are really rotten Rating : 5/5
