News MXGP 2026: The excitement begins in Argentina! (Schedule and TV coverage)

MXGP motocross bikes at the start of a race, at the first corner

The long wait is over. This weekend, the engines of the 2026 Motocross season will finally roar into life on the brand new track in Bariloche, in Argentine Patagonia. For this opening round, the paddock offers us a scenario worthy of the biggest blockbusters: champions changing teams, hungry returnees, and a starting grid that will make your head spin.

Musical chairs: Who will ride what?

If you missed the off-season episodes, hang on tight. Eight world champions are at the start, but many have changed colors.

The major event is Tim Gajser leaving his historic red for the blue of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory. For his part, Jeffrey Herlings is taking a chance on Honda HRC Petronas, where he will be supported by French prodigy Tom Vialle, back in MXGP after his American adventure. Reigning champion Romain Febvre remains loyal to his Kawasaki, determined to defend his number 1 spot against the rising power of youth represented by Lucas Coenen.

MX2: The next generation is already here

In the MX2 category, Simon Längenfelder sports the number 1 plate on his KTM. But the French competition will be tough with Mathis Valin (Kawasaki) and Maxime Grau ready to shake up the world rankings from the very first races in Argentina.

The Reference's opinion

This first GP is always a leap into the unknown. The Bariloche circuit is a blank slate for everyone, which could level the playing field. Keep a close eye on Maxime Renaux, who was particularly comfortable on Argentine soil last year. Between Gajser's historic transfer and Vialle's return, the 2026 season promises to be one of the most unpredictable of the decade.
