presentation of the GSR 600 2006

a name: GSR. That's it, and it's big. For with these 3 letters, the manufacturer unveils a new breed of machine in its range: that of the ebullient roadster. GSF and GSX are the names of the Hamamatsu-based manufacturer's roadsters; R stands for sports bikes. This new name being the combination of the others, it's easy to imagine the concept: a Naked machine with a sporty mill.

You're familiar with the famous Bandit, an excellent bike but not quite in the same league as the Honda Hornet, Kawasaki Z 750 and Yamaha FZ6. It lacks an aggressive edge and some twenty horsepower. With this GSR, Suz has entered this niche with arguments that seem likely to hit the bull's-eye. The innovative chassis would be right at home on a medium-displacement sportsbike: a handsome aluminum perimeter frame anchored by a huge, reinforced swingarm. So, there will be watts. Those of the 2005 600 GSX-R 's boiler, with a mapping more suited to a roadster. A little more torque and roundness at lower revs, and power revised to around 100hp. It's the design that's going to make the difference. And here, it's very pleasing. From the front, you can make out the inspiration of the B-King show proto (a crazy Goldorak-like thing with a Hayabusa engine and compressor). The silhouette, on the other hand, is chunky, with rugby shoulders that integrate the turn signals and a sporty hindquarters. Under the seat, nothing less than an MV-Agusta F4-style exhaust system... Well, almost - the 2 flutes releasing the throttle surround lights encircled by a ring imitating 2 other nozzles. Even the rear blinkers have been the subject of a styling study, a welcome change from the usual orange bits of plastic. The GSR has a hell of a b... and, let's hope, a hell of a temperament. The instrument panel is ultra-complete, with the added bonus of gear indication (like the new GSX-Rs). Only the design lacks inspiration and cachet. Once you've seen it up close, itches to take it for a spin.

unless you want the engine of the 600 GSX-R in a roadster at all costs, it's not the choice of engine that will make the difference with the FZ6 or Hornet. All 3 are equipped with a 4-cylinder supersport engine developing almost the same power, and all have the same character trait: not very full at the bottom, and a lot of potato at the top... but good at the top.
SUZUKI 600 GSRThis typical 600 cm3 trademark can vary considerably depending on the boiler. And while the GSR's boiler doesn't really stand out technically from the others, it graces the user with a remarkable smoothness, superior to that of its rivals. At around 7,000 rpm, it starts to get excited, and from 10,000 to 13,000 rpm, it flies off the handlebars and turbines with the most severe enthusiasm of any roadster in its class. The GSX-R's reputation is well and truly in its bowels. There's just one relatively painful bone to pick: you'll need to revise one or two parameters in the injection control unit. When you throttle back, the engine catches the hiccups and passes them on to the transmission. A pity.

those who like to be reassured by a rigorous chassis will appreciate the GSR's unflappable stability. The wise values of the chassis clearly define this quality... which will be reflected elsewhere. Stability comes at a price, and on the GSR, it's agility that pays the price. The front end lacks liveliness and requires more authority from the rider than the Yamaha or Honda. It's a pity that the GSR's steering and precision demand an obvious muscular willpower from the sporty rider. But there's nothing wrong with having to push it a bit, to assert your virility on the machine ;-)))
These roadster troublemakers had accustomed us to near-Spartan comfort. Suzuki has understood all this, and the GSR offers not only a real seat with good foam inside, but also suspension systems that take in the roughness of the road, instead of throwing it into your arms and back. The new Suz scores points for comfort... if only it weren't for the hiccups caused by fuel injection.

all in all, with the GSR, Suzuki does no better or worse than existing benchmarks. The more cheerful engine doesn't have a case completely suited to its pretensions. Overall comfort, above the rest, is undermined by the engine's response to re-acceleration and the front brake's lack of diplomacy. Of course, it's the looks that will appeal to you more than anything else.

* And even young people can ride it, as the GSR is offered in a 34hp version.

Top bike (mine's from 2008), characterful engine that's great at low revs and furious at higher revs: you can cruise along or go (very) hard!
Comfort-wise, it's great, just add a little windscreen for long trips
I can't see any fault with it (apart from the average finish, perhaps - but that's still okay); no injection jerking problems, contrary to what I've sometimes read!
I compared it to a 600 Hornet (test of the 2 bikes on the same day) and engine-wise, I found the Honda quite bland compared to the GSR! Otherwise, the Hornet seems superior in terms of finish and handling.
I've also read that the GSR lacks torque or power at low revs: not true, it runs superbly, even at low revs, and the engine is incredibly pleasant to ride!
In short, it's a great bike, and its reliability seems excellent.

I've been riding a gsr 600k8 for several years now, and I can't say enough about it: it's a superb machine (you can really feel the gex's engine) for hard riding, but also for everyday use. Excellent value for money, it's a rail that sometimes needs taming, but the overall balance is very good and the brakes bite hard on mine. Having just returned from a 4000km road trip in Spain, it lacks a little wind protection on long trips. Mine has 92,000km and, despite average maintenance, has no problems apart from the plastics, which age badly. Fortunately, spare parts are still widely available! Rating : 5/5

Hello everyone,
i would like to have some information being a young driver for my first motorcycle I wanted to know if the gsr and bridle or if it depends on the model and know if there are symptoms mechanical to know and if the maintenance side is expensive?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hi there,

I can only answer your question about the clutch, and as I said in a comment below, it can be clutched at 34hp but is not eligible for the new A2 licenses because its original power is too high (>95hp).

This is my second gsr, and I'm still not disappointed. It's an excellent machine, very pleasant to ride, with a lot of response from the handlebars, it's in the 750cc class, and I've never seen a 600cc as lively as this one... Having tried a fz6 (same number of horsepower), which I found too linear, it remains for me one of the best roadsters made to date! Rating : 5/5

French Arres28 Model 2009
Hello
I don't understand at the bottom of the engine specifications you say that it can be clamped in mtt1 and yet in these same specifications you give it 98hp.
I thought that we could not have a motorcycle in mtt1 more than 95hp.

Could you please enlighten me.

Hello,
The data sheet dates from before the new laws on A2 licences, and at that time the GSR was indeed clampable in MTT1. For the new A2 licences, its original power is too high and it is therefore ineligible.

Hello,

The article you looked at is out of date unfortunately, the original rules for the A2 license weren't very logical and have since been changed. You'll have to choose another model for the first 2 years.

An excellent bike that I've tried 2-3 times and almost bought, fun, powerful, with a great sound when accelerating, with an irreproachable chassis and comfort, alone or in pairs. This bike is a serious toy with excellent versatility. You'll just have to adjust the right-hand grip when you don't want to consume too much fuel, which isn't too difficult to do, as the driveability isn't bad at low revs, and with a high bubble you manage to reduce the phenomenon. In my opinion, this is the best sports roadster, because it's versatile enough to do everything pleasantly. Rating : 5/5
French alx600gsr Model 2008
having bought this model, I don't regret it at all, the power and comfort are very present and the weight of the heavy front axle is rather advantageous as it stabilizes the bike well, the engine is smooth at low revs but once you get past 7500/10000 rpm it sends out the heavy stuff. The only negative point is that the bike is too upright once on the side stand, and you have to be careful of the slight incline that could cause it to fall over Rating : 5/5

31/08/09 At 43, after owning 4 125cm3 bikes, I decided to move up to the "big cube", and bought a GSR...I'm crazy about it, it's quiet down low, and when you want watts, it gives them. Comfortable, beautiful, you have to keep your wits about you if you don't want to screw up, because it's bewitching. Correct original tires, small space under the seat for a U. The exhaust heats up quickly, and my clutch cable makes a funny noise. Otherwise, nothing but good! Bonne route à tous ! Rating : 5/5

Hi everyone, I'm lucky enough to own a copy of this little fury (GSR 600), it's the best and I wonder how I could have wasted all this time with twin-cylinders, certainly with torque but no driving pleasure when you've had a taste of the GRS.For my part, I'm cured of in-line or V-twin, I've had both.my suzuk has quite a temperament and I'd strongly advise those who are still hesitating to give it a try. Good evening,

I've had a GSR for 1 month and 1400 Km. It's my first bike

Nobody talked about duos, in fact it allows you to share its engine with a passenger comfortably installed compared to a Z750, FZ6

It's practical on all types of road, I'm a girl and I've never had a problem with the front end feeling heavy, even on a duo.

And still, its speedometer (gear indicator, clock, trip 1 & 2, ...) is very innovative and easy to read, and you still get the joy of climbing the red zone with the rev counter

There's plenty of practical detail to put a U in

Bonne route à toutes et à tous.

i bought a 600 GSR in January and bad luck for me at 400 km - water in the engine - engine exchange - reason given: head gasket flatness defect? - i got it back 3 weeks ago, drove it 400 km again at 5000 revs (we're dragging ourselves at 90) and I'm unpleasantly surprised to see condensation on the oil level sight glass. Does anyone have this little problem on their 600 GSR or have I inherited a new problem? Rating : 5/5

I bought it in December as soon as it came out and I must say that it surprised me from 8000rpm. Good temperament, but the front suspension is a bit lacking
Apart from that, it runs very well and just needs to be pushed hard. Can't wait for a good wheel arch, as the pot under the seat is really ugly
Ermax has already released another rear light line with integrated lights and clickers: "nice". Can't wait to see what's next
Have a good ride and long live the 4-wheelers and the Twins, for they too have a good temperament.

So many compliments on this bike! I own a 650 bandit S and have already clocked up 8000kms
I tried out the GSR, and apart from the good suspension and braking and its good looks, I was disappointed with the rest compared with mine. I'm still looking for the 20hp difference (by the way, take a look at the comparisons in the latest moto journal N°1701, the figures speak for themselves, I'll say no more) and above all, from 100km/h, hello protection....nulle, a fork head is a must. i got rid of my FZ6 a month ago, and since then I've been trying to find a replacement, and after seeing everything (!) that's available in equivalent models, I think I'll be tempted by the GSR. I can't wait to see what accessories Air Max is going to release (the red model from ACM Marseille has gone for a makeover), so if anyone can give me any information on what's planned, thank you in advance. For me, this is what satisfies me the most, both aesthetically and technically. I can't wait to try it out on the Gineste. Rating : 5/5

I saw this new GSR at the Brussels Auto Show last night, and I have to admit, it's pretty nice. Nice dashboard and nice ass with the double stop... Rating : 5/5

i'm a little disappointed because, once again, there's not much innovation at Suz. No attempt has been made to create a new style, as the latest Fazer did (I don't like it, but the style is daring). Here, it's a case of "I steal a little from everyone": the Hornet's hose, the FZ6's frame and headlight, the Hornet's stance
All in all, it has the merit of making us forget that insipid Bandit 600/650. Personally, I wouldn't sell a FZ6, a Hornet or a Z for this.

GSR 600 !
Very pleasant first few kilometers on this machine: maneuverability, smooth engine at low revs (we'll see what happens after the break-in!), good riding position (maybe straighter handlebars! to be able to attack more!)

I think it's very promising for the future

As for the look, everyone has seen it: you either like it or you don't! Personally, I think it's very well finished, with lots of accessories...

Not much to do on it!
the only downside is the finish of the exhaust cartridge seen from below! We'll see what muffler manufacturers come up with in the future!

it's true that there's been a lot of pumping but the result is quite pretty, I love the Q, the two circular LED lights that fit between the two exhausts, it's clean... the dashboard also looks like it's been well cared for, but the tank lacks character, the scoops break up the chassi's line too much and the poorly positioned nieman is a bit much for me.. fortunately, the engine and handling seem flawless... well ... I'm looking forward to the comparison with its main rival, the FZ6, to refine my future choice of bike Rating : 5/5

what can I say except that the future of the 650 bandit has been compromised by the arrival of this new model, allowing it at last to play in the same league as roadsters
the look is nice, albeit a little copied from the FZ6, Hornet or Z750. Of course, today's motorcycles bear a striking resemblance, but when the idea comes from a proto... well, you're bound to be a little disappointed
i also note the hydraulic fork on this 2006 model, which other manufacturers have replaced with an inverted one

disappointed.... in any case with the image of the B-King in mind; I expected much better than that... I saw it at the show, and it seemed bland; for the rest (road quality) to be seen... Rating : 5/5

Personally, I really like it, it's got a little face just like it should, you just have to see how it works...
But for the profile photos, you must have made a mistake and used hornet photos, didn't you...? in any case, it looks very similar
Last but not least, the neman has been superbly positioned, so that when you take the key out for a walk, the rest of the keyring rubs against the tank, and scratches are a thing of the past.

The B-King was a fabulous proto... but when you see what's left of it... one word: disappointed! What's more, Suzuki kept everyone waiting, which reinforced the feeling of disappointment when we finally got to see the photos. This is certainly a good bike, but there's nothing original about it; they've just made a mix of other brands in the medium-displacement range. It's a shame... Rating : 5/5
