1200 ZZR 2002 test drive

on this fine June afternoon, when we were desperately looking for indicators for Nono's new ZX-6R, chance brought us to Kawasaki to finalize our search. In front of the dealership sits a ZZR 1200, in a black dress that gives it a respectful class... but exciting in my eyes! A few moments later, the keys are in my left hand and the dealer's advice in my right ear - "Watch out, it's unbridled". Tilt - a little over 150 drunks, we're in for a treat! The 4-cylinder snorts happily and flatters the ears. In the age of modern, polished mills, Kawa's mechanics express themselves with more character, a more nostagilic perfume, as if a lot of silent-blocks had been removed. The machine is imposing but manoeuvrable. As I calmly and respectfully warmed up, I discovered a supple, comfortable machine, with a riding position that protects the rider and seems to have been designed to cut kilometers. The steering is neutral, effortless at normal speeds, and you feel at ease cruising along the back roads of... germany.

but the trap threatens: a clear straight line, the desire to know what the mill has in its belly... I can't stand it! Release the Chevaaaaaauuuuuuuxxxxxxx........ Formidable! the 4-legged pushes with joy and power. A huge hand pushes you in the back in any gear, and the vibrations, the melody, the engulfment of the engine make your heart race as fast as the needles race. The chassis is very stable up to 250 km/h (you reach this speed without realizing it), but the forks feel too light beyond that. It pushes with gusto and even rage up to 270-280, then the following kmh are a little harder to fetch. But this Kawasaki still only had a few km and the engine wasn't completely free. The well-protected fairing prevents you from playing the dab in the second half of the speedometer. On the other hand, calories are transferred to your knees, and I can guarantee you that it's hot! Let's see how agile the Kawa is in the mountains. In the small enfilades, the consequent weight is felt and the sequences lack vivacity. Clearly, a sport-GT can't behave like an R6, but the Kawa still holds its own thanks to its impressive engine luggage capacity. By winding up rather than attacking like an idiot, it's an immense pleasure to feel the demonic thrust at every corner exit. The ZZR demands a certain grip and dexterity, and you need to attack it with respect. Braking is disconcertingly easy, powerful and responsive. A real treat, even if the weight means you shouldn't go overboard like you would on a racetrack. The 1200 ZZR is a delight! A lively engine that reminds you of its presence (try it, you'll understand why!), a healthy ride, majestic lines... The few faults it may have will be found by those with a different riding philosophy; those for whom power and agility are one and the same. Gentlemen, if you're staying with Kawa, make no mistake: take the ZX-9R.

i've had it since 2007, and what a joy it is. quite an engine, but let's not dream too much: the weight is there and I thank it for that: it forces us to temperance... Rating : 4/5

i'm 66 years old, I got my license 2 months ago, after riding a Kawa550 I just bought the 2002 zzr 1200, I just did 400 kilometers, it's great !!! Good machine, even for a "young" biker like me! It's ideal for long-distance riding, and what a looker it is! Between 140 and 160 it consumes quite a bit of fuel, so I'll have to reduce the speed. Bonne route à tous. Rating : 5/5

What is it worth as a duo? Is not having ABS a penalty?

62,000 kilometers with this machine. I could never bring myself to sell it, even though I'd bought a new bike in the meantime. If the handling and speed leave something to be desired on poor surfaces, if winding roads are not its preferred terrain, on the other hand its engine is fabulous! A sensation factory. After riding a fuel-injected bike for 3 years, with all too often the feeling of riding a Varta battery, I have no regrets whatsoever about re-forking my Kawa to rediscover the old-fashioned pleasures of engines that smell of gunpowder. For would-be buyers, I'd say: if you're a beginner, pass on this bike, as it's so powerful and unreasonable, it's dangerous. If you've got boards, go for it: this is a bike like no other. Its qualities and the charisma of its engine will soon make you forget its shortcomings! Rating : 4/5

It's got it all:
power, good agility for its weight, comfort, roadholding.

very reliable, which is no mean feat given the price of overhauls and consumables, and long-lasting, both over distance and at sustained speed.

After trying out different machines, I have to say that the ZZR 1200 is a good GT.
Heavy at standstill and in town when the going gets rough, but otherwise a breeze.
I have no regrets about this purchase
Fair winds to all

bought recently I find this machine extraordinary for its time, frankly it has nothing to envy the machine of now that are hushed or nothing lives, if you intend to take a zzr 1200 you can go with your eyes closed. Rating : 5/5
French dudufrance Model 2005
i've been a motorcyclist for several years, and I wanted a sporty GT because I ride all year round. It's an excellent machine for devouring national routes without consuming too much fuel, but it's heavy in town, that's true. I can't wait for spring so I can head for Holland, where I'm planning my next trip. Bon vent a tous Rating : 5/5
French Christian Model 2005
I own a zzr 1200 from 2002 and I currently have 82,000 kms on the odometer. apart from the same complaints as the other owners, i.e. shortness of ride in town, poor road holding on deteriorated roads, ineffective rear shock absorber. on the other hand, no mechanical problems, normal oil change and overhaul, spark plugs, air filter etc. on time.On the other hand, I still have the orine chain and transmission kit, as well as the timing gear ... Super Exellente machine ... I live in Marseille and every day my ass is on the saddle, which I had customized ... Here's a good road to you owners of a zzr 1200 and other soon Cricri 13 Rating : 5/5

From 1,500 to 2,000 kms a month on a ZZR 1200. I'm very happy with it. My only complaints are the weight at a standstill, the handling in (very) sporty conditions and the firmness of the suspension on rough roads, even if the comfort isn't as beastly as I've heard. I did 500 kilometers in a row on roads that weren't always very good, and despite everything, the rear end held up well. The position is slanted, but without handicapping city driving. You have to choose your tires carefully. The ZZR has a tendency to abuse soft-compound tires. The engine is great, it pushes without limits (unbridled version, I live in Belgium...). I stopped at 280, and in my opinion, you can go up to 300 without any problems. In any case, it's impossible to drive for long at these speeds. Its ideal speed is between 180 and 220; beyond that, it becomes physical... In short, an excellent bike. Rating : 5/5
French lusquof Model 2005
Now 3 years old on this ZZR1200, it's my first Kawa in 30 years of riding (licensed at 16 in my day). I'm surprised by the quality of the materials and assembly (almost perfect). In full power, it pushes hard, and at 130 on the freeway, 5.7 l per 100 is cool
I always ride with a passenger, and this is the best duo bike I've ever owned (FJ1200 great too (2EX), XJR1300 not so great, etc.)
Perfectly satisfied except for two points: the weight when stopped and in town (traffic jams) and the magnability at low speeds < 30km/h
Its preferred domain, the giant slaoom, large curves at high speed > 160 KH
Very pleasant in the GD col des alpes
For me, a success.

French francky Model 2005
i've been training my 12000zzr for over 2 years now, and to be totally honest: the only thing I have to complain about is its rear shock absorber, which is "unbearable". Despite all that, with a 4/1 and an optimized bubble (and free version.... goes without saying), it's an exellent spout with no problems whatsoever, because it's a classic design, so there are no surprises... Rating : 5/5
French christophe Model 2005
a good machine, especially in the full-power version. accessories aren't common for it, but you can find them. the hardest thing to find was a wheel flange and wheel arch, but now I've found them

the boot and always the boot finally a mill as we make more, but as kawa c make kawa c stronger than you
