DL 1000 V-STROM 2002 test drive
sunday: not a cloud in sight, bright sunshine, a hot dog, and a V-strom just waiting for my gloves. Angular and imposing, the DL 1000 doesn't surprise with its shape, but it does inspire respect. The design differs according to taste, so let's get on the beast and get married! But the machine is really high up on its legs, and at 1.75 m tall, it's hard for my toes to touch the ground, which is unpleasant when you're cruising around town, where you have to stop every 50 m or so. Fortunately, the big Suz is super-maneuverable. The riding position is sensational, the protection effective (except for the knees) and you quickly feel at ease. The high rider dominates the traffic, and the smoothness of the engine (surprising for a twin) allows you to get out of Grenoble with ease. The small mountain roads will unleash the character of Suzuki's new baby. OOhhh, an R18 that drags... GGAAZZZZ !!!! Fantastic, the twin responds magnificently; hyper-compliant and vigorous, this engine is a little marvel. Very usable at low and medium revs, you don't even have to pull towards the red zone to enjoy it. All accompanied by a raging noise that sends shivers down the spine. On the Isère's series of small bends, the chassis is surprisingly easy and responds instinctively, but the V-strom has a tendency (albeit minimal) to widen the trajectory when exiting a bend - don't panic, it sticks to the asphalt. The gearbox is a Suz: fast, precise, with a 6th overdrive that lets you cruising along at a leisurely pace on the freeway. Excellent braking completes the package, making you want to have fun with the V-strom, the mill being borderline fudge-pusher. The suspensions work efficiently, in a spirit more GT than sport, which limits the feel of the road a little, but is a treat for the spine.

Is this new Suzuki perfect? In its class, it defends itself very well, but it's up to each and every one to judge... as for me, I'm more than thrilled...!!!!

Very good machine, but the seat height is a problem for riders under 1.75m. Rating : 4/5

I was looking for a big, comfortable trail bike, so I first went for the 1000 Varadero, which is a little more comfortable because it's better suspended, but it's so heavy! I finally opted for a 2003 1000 Vstrom, and I'm delighted with it! it's very easy to handle, responsive, and compared to the Honda it has a fuel gauge, and the overdrive has a warning light on the speedometer. Injection reduces fuel consumption... I also found that protection was better on the Suzuki than on the Honda. Rating : 4/5

French Pakatoche Model 2006
Owner of a 2006 1000 V-Strom with 38,000 kms bought from a retired man, I'm delighted. Big torque but to be used above 3000 rpm, absolute comfort, good braking but fork a bit stiff. Fuel consumption within the norm, average finish (poor quality plastics that turn white). The Bagster comfort seat is a real plus. Very good bike, reliable and high-performance, a good replacement for my (too) often broken-down flat (ABS and injection blocks, especially the gearbox output shaft, changed when the wheel was only two years old)
In short, if I had the money, I'd buy the same bike, but more recent, with abs.

95 or 98 there won't be much difference, only E10 can cause problems in the long run, Suzuki has declared its models compatible only from 2008/2009.

dear Philippe,
it's all a matter of taste,
after breaking my first vstrom 1000, i tried the tiger (in 1000 or 1050 version) and yes it's a good machine, but for my taste the 3 cylinder is much too linear (almost like a 4 cylinder) compared to the strong character of the DL's big Vtwin,
personally, I love the comfort, the practicality with suitcases, and the fact that you can drop a 675 Daytona and a Z1000 in a mountain pass (yes, I did...). All of which is to say that performance-wise, it's pretty cushy, but it's also got some serious wattage!

A motorcycle that's rarely enjoyable overall, but in detail, with an engine that knocks too easily, or propels you too quickly beyond legal speeds, due to a lack of gear spacing. A final black mark is the prohibitive fuel consumption in multi-purpose use. Let's hope that the next Vstrom will have corrected these major shortcomings. Rating : 3/5

Very good bike, despite problems with the alternator and voltage regulator, which resulted in a bill of around 750 Euros. Comfortable and economical on long trips (approx. 6.5 liters per 100 km at 140 km/h). Power and torque are there, but you'll need to avoid revs below 3,000 rpm. Not designed for city riding, as fuel consumption quickly climbs to around 10 liters per 100 Km. I would recommend this bike. I own the travel (with the three suitcases) and it's not afraid of asphalt, and the passengers aren't that tired. Beware, this bike could be a trap for your driving license (you quickly exceed the speed limit) Rating : 4/5
French thierry14240 Model 2002
I bought this bike 8 years ago and almost 30,000 km on it. I got this bike after a sports bike, and was afraid of getting bored on a trail bike. All the reviews of this bike have been very good, and rightly so. It's the best quality/price/performance ratio.
It's a machine with character, comfortable and very enjoyable to ride, despite its size (beware of those under 1.70 m tall).
the only complaint is the vibrations when you're not in the towers, but it's a biscylinder too...
I recommend it as a compromise between trail and GT. To try it is to adopt it!
And I don't have any Suzuki shares!

2 years on the road with 1000 vstrom, very pleasant for 2
but the vibrations in the helmet, despite the high bubble, are really hellish
otherwise, the chassis is very good and the engine has been tuned by a pro (grand prix), so there's nothing to say
As for the objectivity of dealers, it's a poem...............

I've been riding a DL 1000 for 6 months, after a long experience with an Italian Guzzi twin. It's a very good machine, full of character and comfortable as a duo, far more reliable than the Italian. The only drawback is that turbulence at helmet level is particularly noisy, and the installation of a high bubble causes the bike to start steering past 180. Rating : 5/5

what a piece of crap this becane near 10000 euros it's full of a coup it stalls the digital meter is unreliable Rating : 5/5

I've owned my DL1000 since September 2003, with 37,000 km on the clock. I used this machine for over a year in the Paris traffic, on motorway routes (over 800 km). Nothing to report apart from a valve reset at 22,000 km instead of 24,000 km. Equipped with a high bubble and full GIVI luggage, it's a real GT

It's my first twin-cylinder, and what a joy it is. It's true that there are a few vibrations, but aren't they part of the charm of this machine?

Last weekend I went to see the Barcelona GP, and the small roads of the Pyrenees were a playground where the suz showed me all its rigor and all the ardor of the engine that equipped the TLs. What a pleasure, I tell you, especially when you have soprtives that have to work hard not to disappear from your mirrors
The only hitch is the lack of ground clearance, which makes the footbraces and exhaust rub under the engine when cornering hard...

The balance is therefore more than positive: a reliable, playful motorcycle that knows how to do everything while providing comfort and pleasure...
The downside is its "offbeat" look: really, Mr SUZUKI, you could have made more of an effort... but once you're on it, you don't see it anymore, and the magic is immediately added.

I've owned a 1000dl since September 05 (6000 km since then in snow, sleet and ice) after 8 years of riding an Africa twin 750, and I'm delighted with this machine despite a few problems since I bought it: rear sprocket bearing problem, clutch receiver gasket leak, stalling when slowing down, backfiring when switching off the throttle. Which owners of this machine have had this kind of problem? Rating : 5/5

The problems I've had are the rear wheel bearings and 2 clutch bells, which are still under warranty despite the 2-year warranty period. Otherwise, normal maintenance, 25,000km. Otherwise, is there a V STROM club like in GERMANY? because we could organize outings. I'm from the RHONE ALPES region. See you soon.... Rating : 5/5

i've had a DL1000 for 4 years (2002), it's my fifth bike and I tried out about 13 different models before deciding to buy it. At the time, there was no mistaking it, among the 13 (BMW, Yamaha, HD, Honda, Triumph...) it was the only one that gave me the sensations I was looking for (pleasure even at low speed). Since then I've only done 10,000 km for lack of time, but I still hope to make at least one long trip with it. My only regret is that its height is a bit too high for my height (1.72), and the hardness of the clutch makes it tiring in Paris traffic jams. I love the sound of the engine, but on the road I get too much noisy turbulence in the helmet and I had to put a high bubble to be able to ride with the visor open, but now I get too much vibration in the handlebars at high speed. Engine-wise, I haven't found anything better, but I've tried a BMW 1200 GS, which for me is the ideal bike, but it's a lot more expensive. Rating : 5/5

I've been interested in this model for a long time, but the new styling scared me. I read a lot of articles and lots of people complained that the engine knocked, that we should change the sprockets for better throttle response, etc. I finally spoke with an owner my age (43) and he greatly reassured me about the bike. So I bought my v-strom at the end of July 2005. I rode it 5000 km before the snow fell, and the wind protection was a bit weak, but with a spare window, the problem almost disappeared. I now have a corbin seat, which is a blessing (the original one is frankly poorly designed), and GIVI panniers have been installed on the bike. All that's missing is the spring weather to get back to 2006, where I left it last autumn. It's my 19th bike, and I have to admit in all honesty that it's by far the best-suited bike I've had for everyday riding, as well as for 10-day trips across the country. Rating : 5/5

To all V-STROMEURS, I've had exactly the same sensations on my 1000 since October 2005. It's a real pleasure to drive this machine! Unfortunately, I have a small problem that some people certainly have, or have had. It's a regular cut-off between 2000 and 3000 rpm at stabilized speed (electric or injection). It's not serious, but it's unpleasant and not very reassuring
My dealer doesn't notice anything when I test it... Strange!!! If anyone has an answer to this problem, I'd be happy to know the solution. Thank you in advance and good to all you bikers.

I've been riding Transalp 600Vs for about 10 years. But with 2 people and luggage, it became too slow, even dangerous. I started looking for a more powerful machine without having to buy a 1000. The DL650 V-Strom is a real HAPPY machine! 4,150km (crossing France from east to west and visiting Brittany) in 15 days with 2 people and 50kg of luggage (including the weight of the 3 tops). Handling, power (freeways as well as winding and bad roads), comfort and even fuel consumption, and so on..., nothing to criticize. The seat height, the original adjustable bubble, the fuel gauge and the clock are the little details that kill! Don't hesitate ;-) Rating : 5/5

I set off from Quebec City to ride through the Rocky Mountains and back through Montana to Quebec City. A trip of 10,700 km in 22 days. Believe me, it's the best bike I've ever owned. Reliable and comfortable. There were two of us on the bike, plus the bsgsges Rating : 5/5
French Jean-Jose Model 2002
I did a test ride of about 100km in the Alpilles this weekend... solo. It left me with a very, very good impression! I already own a playful trial bike (a KLE 500) and this 1000, which is heavier... is very playful! Rider protection is excellent... whatever the speed ;-) especially compared to the KLE. We started off with a bad section of road... which immediately put a strain on the suspension, but as soon as the road improved... the frame was perfectly at ease, and didn't flinch in the series of curves. Then, in the afternoon, as a duo, we went for a ride on the national lees... my wife really appreciated her place and the smoothness of the engine. In short, this bike gave me a lot of pleasure. Note: I'm going to try out the 650... And then my choice will be firm! (for the next bike) Rating : 5/5
