Our tester's opinion on the MT-09 900 Y-AMT from 2025

MT-09 900 Y-AMT 2025 test drive

Hi everyone! So, let's talk about the look of this new MT-09 Y-AMT. Frankly, it's pure Yamaha, in the "Master of Torque" spirit we're all so familiar with. Either you like it or you don't. Personally, I like the whole package. The frame is massive, and the swingarm exudes rigidity and power. And the fairings... what can I say? It's clean, it's sharp, it looks like it's been drawn with a crowbar! It gives the bike an aggressive, rough-hewn look that's very much in keeping with its spirit.

On the other hand, I find the look through the front lights a little more... composed than on the MT-07. The headlights are less manga-eyed. It gives it a wiser, calmer air, almost. But don't be fooled for a second! Behind this more discreet facade lies a beast ready to pounce.

Well, if I had to quibble a little, I'd say that those gray covers on either side of the radiator... I find them a little too present, a little too bulky for my taste. It's a small detail, but I find that it weighs down the line a little in that area. But overall, the design of this MT-09 is a statement of character, and I appreciate that!

A beautiful finish

Style (4/5)

A closer look at the details reveals an overall satisfactory quality of finish on this MT-09 Y-AMT. The materials used have a well-kept appearance. The brushed aluminum insert adorning the Yamaha windscreen is an appreciable aesthetic element, even though it is included in the catalog of options.

However, the use of adhesive tape to hold certain cable harnesses in place could be seen as a less attractive solution. Similarly, the attempt to conceal cables behind the handlebars, to optimize aesthetics, does not result in an integration free of criticism, not least because of the appearance of the rubber clamps used.

The grids on the tank are an interesting styling detail, whose hexagonal pattern might evoke a certain hornet-like competition from Honda.

But to get back to basics, yes, overall, the materials are well assembled. It feels solid. The integration of the engine into the frame, with its clearly visible space, gives the impression that there's plenty of power and space, and that's promising. The assembly is meticulous, and we don't have a ton of screws spoiling the lines, which is a good point. And frankly, I find the opening in the frame that reveals the rear central shock absorber super stylish! It highlights an important technical element and gives the bike a sportier look.

No need for a user manual

Equipment (5/5)

The Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT's instrumentation is based on a 5-inch TFT screen offering excellent readability. Essential riding information is clearly displayed, including the time, current speed, fuel level, instantaneous speed and engine rpm. The display also shows the transmission mode selected (AT for automatic or MT for manual), as well as the driving mode selected from the available options: Street (associated with D mode), Sport (associated with D+ mode), Rain (available in manual mode), and the customizable Custom 1 and 2 modes.

Riding modes are selected via two buttons on the right-hand switchgear, while settings and other controls are grouped together on the left-hand switchgear. The ergonomics of the handlebar controls have been designed for intuitive use, with sufficient spacing between buttons to facilitate operation, even when wearing winter gloves.

In terms of standard equipment, the MT-09 Y-AMT offers a keyless start system. Although simple to operate, it does require a certain amount of familiarization, particularly when it comes to locking the steering. The presence of the transponder (key) is required within a one-meter radius of the motorcycle to enable starting; beyond this distance, the system remains inactive. An audible signal is emitted when the engine is switched off, if the ignition is not completely switched off.

The fuel filler cap locking system follows the same logic of the absence of a physical key. Proximity to the transponder is required to unlock the dedicated Yamaha clip, allowing access to the fuel tank, a feature that evokes a certain ease of access, and above all less handling and risk of losing the key at the gas pump.

Comfort that matches style

Comfort (4/5)

Let's turn now to the overall comfort offered by this Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT.

In terms of riding position, the compromise is rather successful for a sports-oriented roadster. You'll find yourself with a relatively upright torso, which you'll appreciate on your daily commute. The legs are not excessively tucked in, contributing to overall comfort. The saddle, though narrow enough at tank level to make it easy to put both feet on the ground when stationary, offers adequate width when riding. The high handlebars contrast with the low fork head, contributing to this versatile riding position.

When it comes to protection from the elements, it's worth remembering the "Naked" nature of this bike. As a sporty roadster, protection against wind and rain is inherently limited. Bikers seeking greater protection should look to Sport GT models. Here, the experience remains faithful to the "naked" spirit of the machine, with no major concessions on protection.

As for the duo, passenger seating is adequate for occasional rides. Nevertheless, the MT-09 remains a motorcycle geared more towards the pleasure of the solo rider, and the comfort offered to the passenger cannot be compared to that of a machine more dedicated to two-up travel. The front of the passenger seat, particularly rigid because of its function as an access point to the storage space, proves uncomfortable for me, who likes to put my seat on the back, so as to lie down on the bike and reduce wind resistance.

A deux sur la MT-09 2025

In terms of comfort over longer distances, the seat proves adequate for outings of no more than half a day. Beyond that, fatigue may be felt. The absence of rubber on the rider's footrests causes slight vibrations that can be felt as the kilometers go by.

No more contemplating it, we're on the move!

Agility (5/5)

The Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT is surprisingly easy to handle from a standstill. The 193 kg fully loaded weight is not excessively noticeable when maneuvering. The turning radius is adequate, allowing you to make U-turns on moderately wide lanes without the need for complex handling. The bike's overall balance is a strong point that I was able to appreciate, a characteristic that also manifests itself dynamically.

As far as getting to grips with the Y-AMT automated transmission was concerned, there was some initial apprehension. That's why I opted for an initial approach in AT (automatic) mode. This initial phase enabled me to observe the MT-09 Y-AMT's behavior and familiarize myself with the operation of its gearbox without manual intervention. I quickly realized that it was still possible to select gears using the + and - triggers on the selector, even in automatic mode, offering a degree of control. Likewise, in manual mode, the system is proactive, intervening to avoid under- or over-revving, a feature I consider a guarantee of safety and mechanical preservation.

Using the cruise control on this Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT is simple and functional. Activation via a dedicated button, followed by action on the setting selector, makes for easy engagement. Precise adjustment of the desired speed is then intuitive.

We turn up the sound, the rhythm and the fun

Engine (5/5)

Let's move on to the most subjective, but oh-so-important aspect: the riding sensations offered by this Yamaha MT-09 Y-AMT.

Moteur et train arrière de la moto

Sound

The sound signature of the three-cylinder CP3 engine is, in my opinion, a real asset. Its deep, throaty tone inevitably encourages the rider to put the engine through its paces. Every acceleration is accompanied by an intoxicating roar, culminating in the CP3's characteristic rip at higher revs. It's hard to resist the urge to "pull" on the engine, if only for the aural pleasure it provides.

Power and performance

The MT-09 Y-AMT is clearly positioned as a sporty roadster, and its performance lives up to that name. Acceleration is instantaneous and vigorous, propelling the bike with impressive force. The speed gain is dazzling, quickly reaching speeds that are hardly compatible with the limitations of open roads. First gear may seem a little short, but shifting into higher gears, especially second and third, reveals the full potential of the 119-hp CP3 engine, allowing for remarkable bursts of speed.

Torque

The "Master of Torque" promise of the MT name is fully borne out. The 9.5 mkg of torque are very much in evidence, coming on strongly at high revs. However, the engine's suppleness also means that you can wind up in higher gears at low and mid-range revs without feeling any lack of power. The MT-09 Y-AMT delivers its torque generously, adapting to different riding styles.

Reactivity, smoothness and vibration

The integration of the Y-AMT automatic gearbox makes for surprisingly lively acceleration. A simple twist of the throttle is all that's needed, with the electronics managing the downshift optimally according to demand. This lack of concern for gear selection is particularly pleasant and intuitive. My initial skepticism quickly dissipated, giving way to addictive driving pleasure.

Y-AMT gearbox

The Y-AMT gearbox is a wonderful discovery. Its smooth, precise operation in no way detracts from the MT-09's playful character. Shift management adapts to the rider's style of riding: hard acceleration results in higher revs before the gear change, while a softer ride favors quicker shifts. Similarly, when braking, downshifting is gradual during gentle deceleration, and quicker and more pronounced when braking hard. The ability to intervene manually via the triggers offers additional control, notably to optimize engine braking or anticipate a restart. The smoothness of the clutch even allows you to play with the selector when cornering. One point to note concerns the sensitivity of the triggers, which, with thick gloves, could lead to involuntary gear changes. A degree of vigilance is therefore called for, especially as the bike is quick to respond to any throttle input.

Mapping management

I found the engine mapping to be perfectly adapted to the bike's character. It contributes effectively to the MT-09's sporting spirit, while electronic aids such as anti-wheeling and traction control provide an appreciable sense of security.

Incredible roadholding

Chassis (5/5)

The MT-09 Y-AMT's handling is a real highlight. The Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport tires proved up to the task on a variety of surfaces, including winding and sometimes rough roads. Even on less grippy surfaces (dust and tractor passes), the bike stays on course with confidence, the electronics intervening seamlessly to optimize traction. Feedback to the rider is discreet, testifying to the efficiency of the on-board systems. To fully exploit the potential of the chassis, a track session may reveal any limits.

Brake safely, but for sporty braking, opt for the SP version

Freinage (4/5)

As far as suspension is concerned, overall behavior is very sound, absorbing road irregularities correctly. A few drier rear-end reactions were felt over large bumps, but these were more attributable to the quality of the road than to any fault of the bike. It's worth noting that the suspensions are adjustable for preload and rebound, including the compression of the front forks, offering the possibility of adapting the bike's behavior according to riding conditions. The braking system performs well overall. If I had to make one criticism, it would be a slight lack of bite and power in absolute terms to counter the liveliness of the engine. However, Yamaha offers an SP version of the MT-09, equipped with top-quality Kayaba and Öhlins suspensions, as well as Brembo brakes, for those seeking an even higher level of performance. The ABS system on the standard model provides effective assistance, helping to reduce braking distances without loss of control.

Still a long way to the station?

So, to talk a little more concretely about what it costs and what it drinks, Yamaha claims 5 liters per 100, which would give a range of around 280 km. As for me, having really pulled on it like a bear, I was a little under 200 km. But I think that in more normal use, to go to work or for a leisurely stroll, you should be able to get close to 250, or even 280 km without too much trouble.

In terms of price, it's rather interesting: for just €500 more, you get the automatic gearbox. That makes a total of €11499 for the full version and €11199 for those with an A2 license.

On the other hand, even if the MT-09 Y-AMT is accessible to A2 license holders, I find it hard to imagine it in this configuration. Going from 48hp to 119hp with such an explosive engine requires a high level of riding skills. You really risk scaring yourself, or worse. And I'm afraid that the electronic throttle is so castrating on this engine that it completely spoils the fun.

For me, this MT-09 2025 Y-AMT is a real revelation. It's been a long time since I've ridden an MT-09, and the evolution is just brilliant. It's ultra playful, and even with the automatic gearbox, it loses none of its behavior. On the contrary, it's reassuring and allows you to do crazy things that you might not otherwise have dared. So, for the small extra cost, you have to take the option, it's so brilliant.

On the other hand, it's still expensive compared to the Z900 and Hornet, which are now charging mind-boggling prices. But in terms of handling, I have to admit that I preferred the playful temperament of the MT-09 to that of the Z900. I haven't (yet) tried any of the other Street Triples or Hornets that overshadow it. So I couldn't say which one is the best, and as tastes and colors are different for everyone, everyone will find their happiness among one of them. But one thing's for sure, buying a sporty roadster without trying out this MT-09 Y-AMT is probably a mistake, because I had so much fun with it.

Thanks once again to Alexandre, Damien and the whole Planète Yam team for their trust and the loan of this superb bike.
