presentation of the 500 Saturno Bialbero 1988
Released in 1940, the first GILERA 500 Saturno was, for almost a decade, the scarecrow of competition. It wasn't until the early '50s, with the advent of a new generation of 4-cylinders, that the GILERA 500 Saturno was able to let go.
the concept of the sporty gromono was taken up by the brand in the late '80s (1988), when Gilera, owned by the Piaggio Group sinceowned by the Piaggio Group since 1969, launched a new, ultra-modern single-cylinder model in a range of displacements: 350, 500, 600, and 750 cm3 (the latter of which enabled Gilera to win the Dakar twice).
the new 500 Saturno, on the strength of an already well-honed base (water-cooled single-cylinder, 44 hp for 145 kg), is a winner in the S. O.S. (Sound Of Single) championships.O.S. (Sound Of Single) championships in Italy and Japan, where it defeated a number of crazy prototypes based on Suzuki DR 650, Honda 650 Dominator or Yamaha XTZ 660 engines.
on the road, the Saturno showcases its lightness, maneuverability and lively engine. It's the queen of turns, and will still exceed 180 km/h as soon as the asphalt ribbon allows it to (this is the point in the article where we remind you that this speed is only reached on a racetrack, or at the very least on vacation with our German friends).
unfortunately, it did not survive the Piaggio group's decision to mothball its satellite brand, and today remains a mythical model of the brand, and a rare opportunity on the French market.
