from 2015 to 2026S 1000 XR - business and tourist aviation
BMW wanted to take the S 1000 RR out on the road, so the S 1000 XR was created. More than a tourer, it's a high-performance crossover combining the mechanical aggressiveness of a hypersport with the on-road skills of a maxi-trailer. BMW's answer to those who demand versatility and touring without sacrificing power.
First generation (2015)
Unveiled on the basis of the S 1000 R/RR's in-line four-cylinder engine, it immediately offers 160 hp (118 kW) and 112 Nm of torque. It features an upright driving position and a long-travel chassis, offering comfort and sportiness.
It is soon equipped with the optional Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Semi-Active), driving modes and ABS Pro.
Early versions were criticized for the vibrations felt in the handlebars at certain engine speeds, a characteristic mitigated by intermediate upgrades.
Power rises to 165 hp in 2017.
Second generation (2020)
The year 2020 marks a complete overhaul of the machine, aimed at correcting early shortcomings and modernizing the model.
The new XR loses around 10 kg thanks to a new, lighter "Flex Frame" and the engine used as a load-bearing element.
Power remains at 165 hp (121 kW), but the engine has been reworked to meet Euro 5 standards and to offer a more linear torque curve and extended gear ratios 4, 5 and 6 to improve fuel economy on freeways. It incorporates a 6-axis inertial unit (IMU) for even finer control of aids (DTC, ABS Pro in curves).
A sharper new look, a color TFT instrument panel, and revised ergonomics with a clear reduction in vibrations.
Third generation (2024)
Power is increased to 170 hp (125 kW) at 11,000 rpm thanks to optimized mapping and intake ducts, while complying with the E5+ anti-pollution standard.
Equipment that was previously optional, such as Keyless Ride, Headlight Pro and USB port, is now standard.
The seat has been redesigned (higher at 850 mm as standard) to improve comfort and ergonomics, particularly in terms of space for movement.
A crazy version: the M
In 2024, BMW launches the M 1000 XR, a 201 hp overpowered version featuring ShiftCam technology (variable valve timing) and M components, becoming a real rocket in the trail-sport-GT category.
