from 2014 to 2026The rider of a vast plain
A highly iconic model, the Indian Chief appeared in the manufacturer's range in 1922, with a 1000cc engine. Here we summarize its epic journey since Indian's revival by Polaris.
It was then an imposing cruiser, equipped with iconic wraparound fenders, competing with the big Harley customs but with a more upscale approach. The engine was a brand new 1811cc block called the Thunderstroke 111. It gradually embraced the "Dark Horse" spirit until it became predominant. It got a taste of dynamic electronics in 2019, offering three riding modes and rear cylinder deactivation.
In 2021, there was a radical change. The Chief changed its philosophy, moving from cruiser to bobber. It became lighter in both style and weight, losing almost 50 kg. On the engine side, it was the opposite. The large twin-cylinder engine grew from 1811 cm3 to 1890 cm3. The electronics evolved with a color TFT screen.
Gradually, it became the only model (along with its Super Chief, Chief Bobber, Sport Chief, and Vintage variants) to be equipped with an air-cooled engine.
