in 1981, aged just 22, Antonio Pinto opened a motorcycle repair and preparation workshop.
later, in 1987, the AJP brand was founded and presented its first model, the ARIANA.alization, the 125 ARIANA, powered by a 2-stroke Casal engine, named after Antonio Pinto's daughter who was born the same year. Production of this motorcycle was limited to a series of 25 units, but original techniques had already been adopted and would be further exploited in future models. In 1991, AJP established a partnership with Petrogal (now Galp Energia), the most remarkable result of which was the creation of the 50 AJP Galp in conjunction with the development of a range of synthetic oils for 2-stroke engines, tested with additives for unleaded petrol.
from 1991 to 2000, AJP took part in the National Enduro Championship, winning five titles in a row from 1996 to 2000. AJP also took part in the National TT Championship, winning in 1996, 1997 and 1999. 2001 was a turning point for AJP: a new motorcycle, the AJP PR4 125, equipped with a 4-stroke engine, was launched on the market. Once again, innovation was present, with the fuel tank positioned below the rider's seat. This innovative feature is still present on today's models. This layout makes for more responsive handling, thanks to a lower center of gravity. The AJP PR4 125 cc also marked the start of AJP exports, with the first units shipped to various European countries. France, Germany and England were the first countries to buy AJP motorcycles.
in 2003, AJP moved to new facilities in Lousada and in 2004 introduced a new version of the AJP PR4 equipped with a 200 cc 4-stroke engine. This model shares the same components as the 125, but offers a more powerful engine with greater capacity.
with this model, AJP expands its business in Spain, Poland, Italy and Greece. 2007 sees the launch of the AJP PR3 200 MX. This model introduces a new chassis concept developed in-house, with two aluminum sides. This technical solution combines lightness with ease of production, and at the same time revolutionizes the visual aspect of the machine, giving it a modern, attractive design. This is followed by a PRO version with a more advanced set of suspensions. Weighing just 89 kg, the PR3 ranks as the lightest 4-stroke 200 cc motorcycle in the world. The short wheelbase gives the model the agility of a trials machine, while remaining a true motorcycle. The 69x53 mm bore/stroke delivers a linear power output of 13.2 kW (19 bhp).
at the end of 2008, sales took off with the arrival of homologated versions of the PR3 series, in 125 cc and then in 200 cc at the beginning of 2009. In 2009, AICEP Capital Global became a partner in the AJP project. Its participation is intended to provide AJP with the resources it needs to develop its business expansion plan. At the end of 2009, AJP announced its most ambitious project to date, the AJP PR5. The PR5 is fully homologated for the European market, and the 250cc fuel-injected engine is powerful but still weighs in at around 100kg. The PR5's specifications include most of the technologies developed by AJP over the years.
