Sylvester Howard Roper (1823–1896) was an American inventor and mechanical engineer considered one of the pioneers of autonomous vehicles and the motorcycle.
Early Life and Mechanical Genius
Born on November 24, 1823, in Francestown, New Hampshire, the son of a cabinetmaker, Sylvester Roper demonstrated exceptional mechanical skill from a very young age. At just 12 years old, he designed a small stationary steam engine without ever having seen one in person. At age 14, he built a scale model of a steam locomotive.
It was in the field of motorized vehicles that his creations made history:
- The steam car (1863): He built one of the very first steam-powered carriages capable of traveling on roads.
- The steam velocipede (1867–1869): He mounted a two-cylinder steam engine on a velocipede frame. This vehicle introduced a major innovation: throttle control via a twist grip on the handlebars, a system universally used on today’s motorcycles.
