A Verge TS Pro motorcycle seen in profile against a black background

A fine announcement in the field of electric motorcycles. While carmakers are making slow progress with solid-state batteries, Finnish manufacturer Verge Motorcycles is taking the whole sector by storm. The company becomes the first in the world to market a production motorcycle equipped with this breakthrough technology.

The "Grail" of autonomy finally on the road?

Long considered the future of mobility, the solid-state battery is now a tangible reality. In collaboration with technology company Donut Lab, Verge has successfully integrated this new-generation cell into its TS Pro.

The figures announced are breathtaking, and shatter current standards:

Lightning recharge: 10 minutes are enough to recover 300 kilometers of autonomy.

Record range: with the "extended range" pack, the machine can cover up to 600 kilometers on a single charge, almost doubling the performance of today's best electrics.

Exceptional service life: unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, which are limited to a few thousand cycles, this battery is designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle.

A technical feat by Donut Lab

Beyond the battery, Verge has taken its unique architecture a step further. The new evolution of the Donut 2.0 engine (the famous hubless motor integrated into the rear wheel) has been lightened by 50%, while retaining its titanic torque of 1,000 Nm. The result: enhanced agility and a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 3.5 seconds.

The use of this technology is a historic breakthrough that is shaking up the entire industry," says Tuomo Lehtimäki, CEO of Verge Motorcycles. This is not a concept bike, but a reality already in production.

Safety and durability: the end of compromises

Why is the solid-state battery a game-changer? By replacing the liquid or gel electrolyte with a solid compound, Verge eliminates the risk of fire, a delicate point in lithium-ion batteries. More stable in the face of temperature variations and manufactured from more abundant materials, it is also part of a more sustainable approach.

What's most surprising? Despite this massive technological leap, Verge reports that this upgrade will have no impact on the bike's selling price, making this innovation immediately competitive.

With this technology, will Verge bring about the long-awaited democratization of electric motorcycles? Technically, it's tempting. But the price will dissuade many potential customers. The range starts at 36,880 euros.

It's not too shabby for an electric motorcycle. The advertised price is a deterrent, but it may sell when prices become affordable. This so-called "solid" battery will also have to prove its sturdiness! Rating : 3/5 Respond to Alain81
