presentation of the DL 650 V-STROM 2016
after almost 10 years of loyal service, the 650 V-Strom has passed the baton to its replacement. It's a good-looking bike, with new technical data, but basically, Suzuki's all-purpose trail bike changes relatively little, its 2012 mutation being more like a relifting. Makes you wonder what the engineers have been up to all these years. Especially as the trail bike market has been revitalizing itself and gaining in style and impact for some time now. Gone are the days of lightweight, woodland-biking monos; BMW's F 800 GS and Triumph's 800 Tiger XC have paved the way for a generation of powerful, fun trail bikes, refining a more than interesting compromise between Transalp-style urban gents and imposing travelers like the R 1200 GS, Guzzi Stelvio, or XTZ 1200.
shy in its evolution, the DL relies above all on its fork head to assert itself. With its softer shapes, it almost looks like a diplodo (look up 80s cartoons). Chunky plastic side scoops and a protective strip of the same material on the tank are the main differences on this new version. As a result, the novelty effect blends with a more rugged yet more gentle impression, but the charm is quickly diluted. The new dashboard, more compact and discreet, completes the look. As for the rest of the machine, the essentials have been retained, with just a few fine alterations.
suzuki renews its faith in its sparkling 645 cm3 twin. This has given the SV / SVS duo a great reputation. Currently installed in the Gladius, it will continue to operate in the DL 650, albeit with a revised compression ratio - up from 11.2 to 11.5. The cam profile has been revised to improve mid-range power and torque. The use of a single valve spring instead of a double reduces mechanical losses. The clutch is revised for greater flexibility, and the housing protecting it is thicker to reduce mechanical noise. For the same purpose, the crankshaft has been redesigned. Previously air-cooled, the oil cooler is now liquid-cooled.
Officially fuller and peppier across the entire engine speed range, the twin is also more sober: 10% less fuel consumption.
The trail bike has lost 3 kilos and 2 liters of fuel. The tank has been slimmed down to the knees, allowing greater control of the machine and better foot contact with the ground. ABS, more sophisticated and lighter (down from 1.5 kg to 0.7 kg), will be supplied as standard, as will a 3-way adjustable windscreen. The wheelbase increases by 5 mm and the seat by 15 mm. The rear luggage rack is now made of resin rather than aluminum. Also noteworthy is the new shape of the mudguard to improve cooling by directing a flow of air towards the radiator.

it's a pity that Suzuki's approach is so unadventurous, even if it appears that this V-Strom will be backed up by a more cross-country version, complete with roll bars, panniers, top case, double bubble and engine cowling. At a time when Europe is offering more typical products with success and image to match, the public would certainly not shy away from a twin with a larger displacement (800 is fashionable), an inverted fork and a profile designed for trekking... In short, something that's sure to impress, even if it's only used once a year.

Bikers' reviews Leave a review - 29 reviews
After 86000kms on a dl650 bought new in 2008, this bike has never failed me in the wet or in the dry, it's really the ideal tool to go to work or for a weekend ride as a duo, I've just given this one to my son and bought a used L2 DE 2014 for my retirement which starts at 62 brushes, a piece of advice to all, don't hesitate to put PR4 Trail Michelin especially Top in the wet Rating : 5/5 Respond to sellig56
instead of thinking about the late 1000,,, it would have been better to add 100 cm3, 15 horsepower and a bit of torque to this 650 which shares everything with the 1000 except the front brake calipers and a traction control useless here ,,,,,
to take another 5000 euros from us, they're not even afraid to take us for just a chequebook Rating : 4/5 Respond to philippe03

Having ridden a K4 for over 60,000 km (top reliability, no worries), I'm now the proud owner of an L2 with 7,500 km. I was very satisfied with the K4, with which we made long trips as a duo (southern Spain, Corsica, etc.), which is why I took the same bike.
For a fairly limited budget, you get a real little GT, very comfortable and powerful enough for very moderate fuel consumption (up to 500 km on a 20-liter tank...)
The protection is top-notch, as is the lighting (unlike many motorcycles), and the noise is very discreet, which, for my taste, doesn't spoil anything.
In short, a very pleasant, economical and comfortable motorcycle with which you can enjoy yourself without counting the cost. Rating : 5/5 Respond to Beru37
Finally, it's certainly not a beauty queen, but I much prefer its look to that of the previous model. (This month is its 1st birthday, and I'm giving it a GPS with a SW-MOTECH mounting system under the bubble...shhh)

I tried one on Saturday and ordered it right away.
Very nice bike, and yet I'd tried a dozen before, and I was very surprised by the model's versatility. I'm 57 and still got the hang of it.
Bonne route à vous tous.

It lacks the spontaneity and ease that makes motorcycles ride effortlessly and naturally.
No cause for alarm, either. The V-Strom is nothing like a tired cow... Rating : 5/5 Participate in the conversation

Comfort, flexibility, sobriety, protection, cool duo,
allonge, availability, preservation of the licence, tranquillity, manoeuvrability, lightness, ABS braking. In short, a bike to put in the hands of all those who want to ride cool without fearing the lack of sin in case of hazardous overtaking.
3500km after several motorcycles from the transalp to the 1150r, including many Triumphs (Trophy, Sprint, Tiger), varadero, africa twin, 1100 GS, 1100RT, the compromise of all these beasts to ride...
One small drawback, however: it's hard to do without the cardan shaft. Rating : 5/5 Respond to Néophyte
i was a little afraid of the 650 because of its lack of power
i've had it for a year now and i can tell you that it's a delight to ride for its comfort and manoeuvrability, and very low fuel consumption. a top-of-the-range trial, to be recommended for quiet bikers. Rating : 5/5 Respond to pat

MINUS: I'd have preferred an 800 or more ... Rating : 5/5 Respond to switcher
However, like many others, I'm waiting impatiently to find out whether Suzuki will follow up the 1000 with a larger-displacement model. If that doesn't happen, the competition (BMW, YAMAHA, HONDA, MOTO-GUZZI...) will inevitably gain a good-sized share of the market for big, rugged trailers. Rating : 5/5 Respond to lolo
