presentation of the Speed 400 2026

Just look at that cute little face!
For its foray into the 400 cm3 segment, Triumph hasn't missed a beat. The new Speed 400 is based on the styling cues of the 660 Trident, but with an extra dose of sweetness. Beauty that tends towards cuteness, because it's essential to make a good impression when entering a segment... and even more so when you have a premium image to defend. Whether 400cc or 2500cc, a Triumph must exude a sense of unwavering value. The mini-Speed has the means to do just that.

There was the Speed Four; within the range, the Speed Triple dynasty continues its career; here, no "Speed One" or "Speed Simple" as this single-cylinder machine might have been called. It's just "Speed", with the displacement as its "first name". At Hinckley, we kept it simple. The Speed Twin 900 and Speed Twin 1200 are now in the neo-retro segment.
Then the offices created, designed, conceptualized and stamped a new family of bikes. Before sending the plans to India.

Our partner Bajaj, one of the country's largest manufacturers of two-wheelers, took charge of production. The group already manufactures Kawasakis and KTMs. The Speed will also be manufactured in Brazil and Thailand. Neighboring Vietnam is already in charge of the majority of British models. But with the collaboration of Bajaj, Triumph benefits from productivity costs and, above all, opens up the huge Indian market.

But not only India. For while Asian markets are fond of small-displacement bikes, this 400 could be the envy of other countries. Take a look at all the ways in which the Englishwoman appeals with her looks as well as her looks: handlebar-mounted mirrors, an elaborately shaped fuel tank, neat little plates to hold the headlight, an inverted, anodized fork, milled fins on the cylinder block, a radiator set vertically to preserve the finesse of the whole, attractive two-tone colors, the triangular shape of the right-hand crankcase, some nicely designed covers, a rear light in a fruity curve! The presentations are full of courtesy. As usual, the finish should be of a very high standard.

The Speed 400 (and its cousin, the Scrambler X) features an all-new engine. This 398 cm3 single-cylinder is called TR, in homage to the TR5, TR6 and TR7 Tiger models of the Trophy line (a long time ago). Motorcycles that offered great moments and victories in off-road racing.
But let's get back to this mill, with its super-square dimensions of 89 mm by 64 mm. As its appearance suggests, it's a modern design. Its innards contain a double overhead camshaft, 4 DLC-coated, finger-operated valves, fuel injection, liquid cooling, an anti-dribble assisted clutch and a 6-speed gearbox. Note the unusual positioning of the drivetrain, on the right-hand side.
Triumph 400 SpeedThe engine-makers give it 40 hp at 8,000 rpm and a nice 3.9 mkg of torque at 6,500 rpm. Clearly, Triumph didn't want to make this the most powerful bike in the sector, probably to round out its character. The Z 400, 390 Duke and MT-03 are slightly more powerful, but at higher revs. The Speed 400 is thus natively A2-compatible, and should carry its crew along at a good pace without being muscular.

Before sitting down on the relatively low 790 mm seat, the rider will have taken care to discover a rather stilted frame for the category. The 43 mm inverted fork is a Showa with a large piston; the bike's rear buckle is bolted; the swingarm is aluminum; the brake hoses are aviation-style; the front brake caliper is radial with 4 pistons; the tires are not local but much more qualitative with Metzeler Sportec M9RR - all this is flattering. As you'd expect at this price level, the suspensions are not adjustable - except for the rear shock absorber's preload. The 17-inch wheels have one brake disc each, 300 mm at the front and 230 mm at the rear.
Weighing in at 170 kilos, the 400 Speed is in the upper mid-range of its class, but still very reasonable.

A little aluminum, a little more steel, and a dose of silicon. Triumph couldn't leave its little princess out in the cold when it came to electronics. All lighting is LED, the headlight has a daytime signature, the throttle is Ride-by-Wire, a USB-C port is included, ABS is present, and traction control can be deactivated. The instrumentation is small but complete, with a small display for engine speed, a spoonful of digital for on-board info, and the essential reading thanks to a needle to appreciate the speed. The tachometer gives priority to miles per hour (MPH).

Triumph expands its range.... The Speed 400 is a small-displacement roadster that aims to gain share in the category, while bringing a "so-British" image of quality. England is once again dreaming of the East, with Baby Speed as its ambassador.

French Ericlemotard Model 2024
Superb, very comfortable bike with good suspension, unless you ride like a maniac, in which case you're on the wrong bike. Engine full of character. On the other hand, very unpleasant at low revs (mapping too poor and inaccurate electronic throttle), low fuel consumption, ultra maneuverable, probably due to the M9 rr tires. I can keep up with bikes that have 120 hp more than me, and I'm a dab hand at steering on very twisty roads, of course. On the other hand, the speedo is rubbish, ugly and inaccurate, and at 160 we're at just 145 on the gps, the lap counter is illegible and the km total very, very optimistic. Chain maintenance isn't easy either, with the pot in front, especially without a center stand, and no possibility of fitting diabolos for the workshop stand. Obviously, the RE Gerilla is a bit cheaper, but much heavier and no more powerful. I haven't tried it though. Rating : 4/5
French megatron Model 2024
almost 1 year since I got it. great bike. very agile, supple, high performance, decent torque, just the first 3 gears are a bit short, especially first gear. fuel consumption, I'm running at ... 2.9l per 100 km... driving cool. annual comprehensive insurance: 190 euro. (bonus +++) 1st overhaul at Triumph: 145 euro ... finally riding a cheap Bécanne ... I'm back in the 80s. The BONHEUR !!!! and yet I went from sports bikes to super-heavy Harleys (and very expensive to maintain) the path of reason ... or wisdom ... Rating : 5/5
French Bart Model 2024
It costs 2400€ in India... Quite a difference! Rating : 4/5
French Fidji Model 2024
I chose the 400 speed 1 for its weight 2 I find it very beautiful and well finished. I ride a lot in the hinterland of Nice and I love this little toy. This is undoubtedly my 100th motorcycle (scooter and motorcycle combined). At 80 springs, I've got my eye on the new Triumph 800. Hi to all bikers. Rating : 4/5
French shadow Model 2024
the + surprising bike very lively good roadholding firm suspensions brakes ok nice finish the - protection unpleasant saddle after 20 km no center stand for the same price the 450 guerrilla has one... the saddle and suspensions are much nicer and it performs as well with 10 kg more and also very nice finish and more versatile Rating : 4/5
French F.a. Model 2024
I've owned this machine for 2 and a half months now, my 2nd Triumph, and I've already covered 5,500 km and had nothing but pleasure. It's a very pleasant and reassuring bike, with its contained weight, so you can take it wherever you want! Rating : 5/5
French Jper38 Model 2024
It's going to be my next bike as soon as I get my A2, it's true that the "bitch" is beautiful! Rating : 4/5
French MielPopss Model 2024
The + I really like this bike, which I've had for two months now. I've now clocked up 1,500 kilometers on it, and frankly, the 40hp are more than there. The torque is even better, much better than some larger-displacement bikes (I'm thinking of the CB500F, having tested it). I prefer this Triumph 400 to a Z650, for example. It's a super-fun bike, and quiet if you want to ride and cruiser. Very maneuverable, light as a feather. It consumes next to nothing. I do between 300 and 380 km on a full tank... I also really like the aesthetics of this bike. (Tastes and colors) But it's nice when people turn around in the street! And yet it's only a small 400, but it does its job relatively well!

The - The speedometer, quite literally, gets on my nerves. Why didn't you put in a digital one?

Mono sometimes a bit rough (motorcycle can lift if you accelerate with the handle in the corner in first gear). 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears too short.

Beau produit!
French Jeff2A Model 2024
The design is a success, both classic and modern, sober and without unnecessary frills.
There's even no need to change the muffler, as on some models, as it's well designed and blends in perfectly with the style of the machine. Even the plate holder doesn't break the whole, which is very rare these days. As for the instrumentation, the needle tachometer is a real aesthetic delight. As for displacement, the power-to-weight ratio remains well proportioned.
Ideally, the maximum power output of 47.6 hp would have been available for A2 license holders, but that's not really the philosophy of this type of motorcycle, which is above all aimed at a discerning public, adept at leisurely rides with a reliable, safe machine. And those who want more will just have to buy a Trident if they want to stay with Triumph. Or go elsewhere... As for the price, it remains affordable. The ideal is to find a good second-hand model, or even a steering or demonstration model, to save a few hundred euros. After that, Triumph's maintenance costs are particularly high, as is unfortunately the case for all European brands.

yellow forks are a miss for a retro, black or chrome as an option ok. a single speedo is ridiculous. 2 optional meters is ok. otherwise you're severely limiting sales for ridiculous details, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. the proof is in the Royal Enfield, where sales are soaring because their retro finish is so successful. Rating : 3/5
French d8idi1957
what holds me back is the lack of tour count otherwise it's fine Rating : 3/5
French SOBREGAS
This bike is classified as "modern/classic", and what I like about this model (which I own) is precisely that it's a little more modern than classic. Personally, I find the gold inverted forks more attractive than the classic gusseted forks found on some Royal Enfields. As for the meters, I like the combination of needle and digital display, where the lap counter is located. In any case, for the price of a 125 scooter, you can have a beautiful machine, well finished, and with a nice Triumph sound! Rating : 5/5
Triumph had an excellent idea in producing this bike. I like its looks. It follows in the footsteps of its big sisters. The Triumph spirit is respected. It's powerful enough for everyday use. The price, of course, is always a hot topic of discussion: expensive bike, not too expensive bike, you be the judge. Rating : 5/5

I'd go for a 5th Triumph myself, I'd love this one, super cute bitch! My last one was a Sprint ST 955, which I sold 5 years ago, and I haven't ridden a bike since, after thirty years of riding them, and it's starting to itch a bit! Rating : 5/5
French Sir Cester Model 2024
Less power than the Caballero 500 (and more), less torque (and more), 20 (yes TWENTY) kg more... And all this 5 years later... Coming from a much more financially powerful brand, it's a real shame... because the finish seems pretty good. Rating : 5/5
French Wolly
I agree with you when it comes to power. However, as for weight, the Speed 400 is claimed to weigh 170kg fully loaded, while the Caballero 500 weighs 150kg unloaded. So the difference isn't much more than 20kg. Rating : 5/5
French Jeff2A
The Fantic Caballero 500s are either scramblers or trails, so they have nothing to do with a roadster like the Speed. And their price is much higher. As for the dealer network, it's far less extensive than Triumph's... Rating : 3/5
French Blaise Model 2024
Nice model, curves, polished bits here and there. A Triumph Bonneville trademark. The problem is the price, which forces you to make calculations. But that's true of all motorcycles. I confess I haven't recaptured the fire that drove me as a young man. Motorcycles have become untouchable, and the forums remind us of this every day. It could have been rougher, and less expensive. Rating : 5/5
French Jeff2A
Yes, it's 2024, and it's true that in 1984, motorcycles were much more affordable and much wilder, but not all of them! Rating : 5/5

French TS2023 Model 2024
Lovely machine in my opinion. Perfect for going to work in style. Worth a try, even if my preference is for its scrambler clone. Rating : 5/5
