presentation of the HP2 Sport 1200 2008

with this new model, the term "sport" has taken on a new dimension at BMW. A sports bike unlike anything we've ever seen from Munich, with technical solutions borrowed directly from racing, and equipped to the hilt. Introducing the HP2 Sport, the third model in the family after the HP2 Enduro and HP2 Megamoto.

endurance race fans and spectators already know this bike. In fact, it has already proved its worth at a number of races this year, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Barcelona, Oschersleben and recently the Bol d'Or. So, while some observers had been anticipating the launch of this bike, no one thought that BM would go this far in designing this machine for the series; because between the endurance prototype and the production version, there are really... very few differences:

BMW HP2 Sport 1200 2008 the flat twin now revs up to 9,500 rpm and spits out 130 hp. To reach these higher revs, the twin-cylinder's cylinder heads have been redesigned from top to bottom and subjected to even more extensive testing. Two chain-driven overhead camshafts and valves actuated by ultra-light finger followers now enable the engine to rev at a maximum speed 700 rpm higher than that of the R 1200 S. Four valves in radial arrangement ensure very compact combustion chambers, making it possible to dispense with the second spark plug previously used on R models. Compression ratio is 12.5:1. BM recommends SP 98 as fuel, but the engine accepts 95. The horizontal arrangement of the camshafts implies two peculiarities: each shaft drives an intake valve and an exhaust valve, and the cams are conically shaped. To increase gas flow, valve-head diameter has been increased from 36 to 39 mm on the intake side, and from 31 to 33 mm on the exhaust side. The intake ducts have been optimized by machining. As with the K 1200 engines, the valve train is operated by means of valve shims.

BMW HP2 Sport 1200 2008 ournable tool of the competition, the shifter makes its first series production appearance on a machine. BM is ahead of the Japanese and Italians on their own turf (adapting racing solutions for series production). This system enables rapid gear changes without having to cut the throttle or disengage the clutch. If the rider actuates the selector, the electronic engine management system acts on the ignition angle and couples the injection. The powertrain then switches to "reduced load" for the gear change, which can be made very quickly without using the clutch. The shifter operates both according to the normal shift pattern and, on request, according to the reverse shift pattern (pressure sensor in the accessory range). However, if the rider actuates the clutch, the system does not come into action. Whatever the situation, the bike leaves it up to the rider to decide whether or not to use the shifter.

BMW HP2 Sport 1200 2008 the braking system on the new BMW HP2 Sport uses Brembo monobloc calipers (as on the Ducati 1098) with four radially-mounted pistons, biting 320 mm-diameter discs. Radial screwing is achieved by means of a new cast-iron pin on the bottom of the Telelever. The rear wheel is calmed by a double-piston floating caliper. The brake hoses are of the aviation type. As an option, BMW offers ABS adapted to sport use. The system has been optimized in terms of its rear-wheel anti-lift function. An additional pressure sensor integrated into the front brake circuit enables finer regulation of the system, preventing the electronic control unit from opening the front brake too early when the rear wheel is heavily unloaded. However, the rider has the option of disconnecting the ABS when out on the track.

BMW HP2 Sport 1200 2008 the cockpit instrument cluster fitted as standard on the BMW HP2 Sport is a little jewel of technology, developed in cooperation with 2D Systems (whose systems are also used for data acquisition and analysis in GP racing). The handset features a large digital display and various operating modes. It is controlled by two switches on the left-hand commodo.
- In Route mode, the rider is shown typical information such as rpm, speed, time, mileage, remaining range and elapsed time, and receives information on the engine warm-up phase.
- In Racing mode, the display shows lap times, maximum rpm, top speed and number of gear changes, for example. Stored data can also be read out on a laptop. The upper section of the instrument cluster also features eight LEDs, which can be used to indicate rpm or as shift-lights. In addition to other functions, the information displayed can be freely programmed. Last but not least, the GP instrument cluster offers numerous expansion options. Laptimers with transmitter/receiver unit, GPS tracking or data logger can be connected to an additional input.

the upper fork crown and the two flanged handlebars, adjustable on the vertical axis, are refined forged parts in solid milled aluminum. The brake master cylinder and radial piston clutch emitter are also located here, and are fitted with quick-release clamps, as found in racing.

a set of beautiful parts, installed to the delight of racing enthusiasts and professionals alike. With all these technical modifications, the dry weight of this BM is just 178 kg, and 199 kg in running order without fuel, making it almost as light as a Japanese German. This weight reduction, together with a number of racing adaptations, means you have a competitive customer in your hands.BMW HP2 Sport 1200 2008
Fewer kilos = more liveliness. So, we put on the right gear: a carbon-fiber fairing, a one-piece, self-supporting rear shell, a revised steel trellis frame and new, even lighter die-cast wheels.

in terms of efficiency, the HP2 Sport pulls out all the stops. The Telelever and Paralever suspension systems are complemented by a fully adjustable Öhlins unit. The rear shock absorber can also be used to adjust the bike's ride height. A revised, tighter gear spacing preserves all the engine's gniak in the intermediate gears. And to ensure long-lasting performance, ergonomics have not been left behind. Eccentrically adjustable footrests keep your boots snugly on the ground, and the HP2 features adjustable shifters and brake levers, multi-axis milled forged-aluminum handlebars and Magura master levers
magura radial master cylinder levers (for brake and clutch).

in order to produce 130 horsepower with the reliability of an endurance machine (which it is), in addition to the above-mentioned modifications, the cylinders are fitted with new, high-strength forged and lightened pistons, as well as adapted connecting rods.
The shape of the nostrils, typical of Bavarian production, has been enlarged and optimized in the wind tunnel to better cool the 2 oil radiators located behind them. Particular attention has been paid to air channelling and optimal heat dissipation.

the hunt for weight was on everywhere. But true to its philosophy of respect for the environment, the brand has taken care to install a three-way catalytic converter, even if it costs a few kilos. A valve in the exhaust reinforces the torque curve. At the cylinder head outlet, the exhaust line now runs under the engine to improve cornering. The stylish muffler is supposed to deliver the Boxer's impressive roar. It remains to be seen... but if the same muffler as the one used in Endurance racing is available as an option, it will be an absolute must: at the Bol d'Or, the prototype gave off the same roar as that of a World War II aircraft engine. Enough to make your hair stand on end ;-)

is the HP2 Sport BMW's answer to competition? No, not yet. This bike has not been designed to compete with a GSX-R or R1 in terms of track or race performance. It's about offering enthusiasts the ultimate evolution of Boxer sportiness for the track. Something exclusive, with a strong racing flavour... the culmination of a challenge that BMW had set itself. But at MP, we think that an HP4 version, with all these technical solutions and a powerful, lightweight 4-cylinder (BM, an F1 engine-maker, can do it) would be a formidable weapon against the Japanese armada.

Splendid, I was lucky enough to own an R1100S and frankly, this one is a sculpture that exudes exciting aggressiveness. As soon as Madame Loto favors me, I'll buy it
What's more, it's great not to be riding everyone else's bike. A dream come true

very nice machine, too bad it's a flat...it bothers me a little that my ears are coming out of the engine. Rating : 5/5
well, I've finally got it, I've been dreaming about it for so long... well, I don't regret it. even when it's running in, it's a blast, it's playful, it's nice, it angles easily, it doesn't carry you away, it dives a little too much, but it's already got a good kick (ex RSV1000, ex zzr1200) Rating : 5/5

Special!!!!!!!
The look is a little too plastic, but if the mill and the magnability are as astonishing, it will be a great success: when will we see a streamlined version?
