presentation of the TUONO 1000 V4 R APRC 2013

to create its first Tuono, Aprilia stripped its RSV 1000 (an extraordinarily efficient twin-cylinder sportbike) down to its bare essentials and modified it a little. The result was an explosive roadster. The years go by, the philosophy remains - but in 10 years, performance, technology and electronics have taken a huge leap forward.

aprilia has been working on its new Tuono for some time now, and with a killer RSV4 as a base, the engineers are eager to rack their brains to create THE roadster that will outdo all others.
"Well, actually, we've got a World Superbike Champion sports bike. How do we do it, boss?
- Simple: do something crazy! "

Ah..... OK. Okay, drop the fairing and... trash it. We're only going to keep the minimum to get a really nasty look, hence this fork head heavily inspired by the RSV4. A few optimizations to accommodate a passenger, with a more welcoming seat and grips integrated into the shell, handlebars to adopt a roadster riding position, and for the chassis...
"Chief, the chassis?
- You're not touching anything! The RSV4 is at the top, we're keeping it at the top.
- But she's a pistarde; we're not going to...
- Get lost! "

that's all there is to it. The Tuono V4R takes the best of today's sports bikes. With its double-spar aluminum frame, 43 mm Sachs inverted fork, Brembo 4-piston radial brake calipers (monoblocs will surely be available for a future Factory version), and adjustable suspensions all round, the Noale streetfighter is already guaranteed great dynamic performance. And its heart, its V4, its fabulous engine has not failed to cause cold sweats to the competition and great fantasy sessions for the masses.

Aprilia TUONO 1000 V4 R APRC 2013Well, the motorists aren't crazy either. They've toned down the 1000 cc to 167 hp. Enough to send you into orbit, stretch your arms out a few centimetres with each acceleration and cramp your fingers from clinging to the handlebars. The loss of a dozen or so grunts is more than made up for by the 11 mkg of torque available 1,000 rpm earlier and the new gearbox staggering; the first 3 gears are tighter. The crankshaft has more inertia and the intake ducts have been lengthened - all with the aim of favoring torque distribution at mid-range. Nervous mechanics? Almost dangerous, in fact. The Italian block is really on fire. Opening wide is like a one-way trip to Space Mountain without a safety harness. It's best to know what you're capable of and not overestimate yourself, especially in Track mode, where the engine management puts you in permanent apnoea because it's so powerful.

based on the RSV4-R, the Tuono V4 manages to weigh the same as the RSV4 Factory, i.e. 179 kilos. This feat is due to the new exhaust system, which is two kilos more ledg' and the weight saved on the rims (also 2 kg). However, Aprilia has sacrificed a few grams to install a small electronic box. What does it do? And what's that? Well, quite simply, the APRC, the riding assistance package for the special RSV4 Factory APRC SE series. The Aprilia Ride Control Performance consists of :
-aTC: traction control, adjustable to 8 positions, manages torque and optimizes traction. The RSV4's system is so advanced that it can be taught to act according to the tire used. The bike will react differently depending on the rubber you put on its shoes.
-aWC: anti-wheeling. Also adjustable, it allows you to make the most of the available acceleration without wasting energy on antics.
-aLC: start-up assistance for rocket-like take-offs. You put the throttle wide open, and when you're at the top, all you have to do is release the clutch and the bike will manage the optimum acceleration all by itself. Here too, there are 3 possible settings.
-aQS: Aprilia's shifter, which lets you shift gears with a flick of the boot, without releasing the right-hand grip or touching the clutch.

The chassis is the same as that of the RSV4, albeit with a few modifications. The steering column is half a degree more open, at 25°, and 10 mm further forward. As a result, the wheelbase is 2 cm longer. The result is a more stable bike. Handling is also enhanced by the engine's position. The V4 is anchored 5 mm lower in the frame. A minor detail: the steering damper is only supplied as standard on the APRC version.

the 1000 Tuono V4R is also equipped with 3 fuel injection maps, so you can modulate your ride according to the mood of the day or environmental conditions (Track, Sport, Road). Given the level of sportiness achieved by the sports bike, this roadster version is already at the top of its class. Not to be put in everyone's hands: this machine is simply diabolical.

French Model 2013
For me, this bike is the grail of the sporty roadster, a bit like the street triple in medium displacement, but even more modern and accomplished. What's more, it's a hell of a looker, and should be as easy to ride as the old Tuono, which seems astonishing on this kind of machine, which is more versatile (and not always crime-riding) than you might think.
