on April 10, 2018, after a hard day's work at work, I hit the road with my Yamaha XV 950 in the direction of Kontich where the Benelli Leoncino was waiting for me.

so as not to arrive totally unaware, I did a little research to find out who this Benelli is, and it came as a great surprise when I learned that she was a woman, a mother of 6 sons, who put all her savings into founding the "Garage Benelli" to enable her sons to have stable employment. It was founded in 1911, and the first Motoleggera saw the light of day in 1921. The brand disappeared in the early 1990s, but was reborn after Merloni bought it in 2003. Today, the Benelli brand belongs to the Chinese Qianjiang (Q.J.) group.

leoncino is the Italian word for "little Lion", proudly displayed on the front mudguard. This model is Benelli's best-seller, built in 1951.

sixty-seven years later, the lion cub reappears stronger than ever.

here's what I think:

design

the Leoncino is somewhere between a scrambler and a roadster, and is available in red, silver and black.

the first thing that strikes you is the nifty convex 13-liter tank, which is made up of two parts, the metal part and the black side covers displaying the brand's emblem inscribed in its medallion.

the leather seat is mounted on a shortened rear buckle, forming a continuous line to the rear mudguard. The LED taillight is modern and inlaid.

at the front, the LED headlight is very nice, with an upside-down U-shaped daytime running light, and the upside-down fork is impressive.

the mirrors are slim but effective, offering a reassuring view of what's happening on the road at the rear without being hampered by the sight of arms or shoulders.

the digital speedometer displays all the essential information: fuel gauge, hour, temperature on the left side of the speedometer. engine and outside temperature, while the rev counter, gear engaged, speed and trip (daily or total) are displayed on the right-hand side.

driving position

it's easy to straddle the Lionceau, and my feet are flat on the ground at a height of 78 cm.

the saddle is welcoming and promises good comfort.

the knees naturally hug the fuel tank, making steering easier and more comfortable. The footrests are correctly positioned and legs and feet fall naturally onto them.

handlebars sit comfortably and at an ideal height, so you don't have to lean forward
Here again, as with the Harley Fatbob, I can give you the opinion of a duo rider, thanks to the same passenger who accompanied me for a few kilometers. She found the rear seat to be fairly comfortable, given the width of the saddle, with an upright position, well-placed footrests that support the foot well, and handgrips that may be minimalist but are so rare on all other bikes.

handlebar controls

the controls are classic and offer the essentials: on the right, the automatic ignition, the comodo to activate the hazard lights and, on the left, two buttons to scroll through the trips and the other to choose between km/ and Celsius or Fahrenheit, as well as the comodos for all headlight functions.

driving

Benelli 500 Leoncino 2018 test driveEvery time you turn on the starter, you get an idea of how the engine sounds in relation to the model on offer. The sound of the exhaust literally dresses up the bike, and is like velvet for the ears. The depth and strength of the breath coming from the engine and exiting the exhaust are immediately seductive.

engage the first gear like a lump of butter, open up the throttle and the twin-cylinder slowly revs up, then the engine sounds more like the roar of a virile lion cub. Nothing brutal, but sparkling nonetheless.

you move up to second, then third, and very quickly to sixth...and you want more .... Admittedly, 47 hp isn't much, but there's still plenty to enjoy. The 6-speed gearbox is both smooth and precise.

the Leoncino is very playful on the road, it doesn't weigh much, it's superbly manoeuvrable, takes bends perfectly without scaring the rider, stays well on its line and straightens out easily on exiting the bend. In short, it's a real pleasure to ride.

on the freeway, on the other hand, the pleasure is less present, it's monotonous and a bit of a flag-waver.

the brakes have just the right amount of bite, and braking becomes more gradual the further you push the lever.

minor faults

although the saddle is welcoming and promises good comfort, I found the seat relatively hard.

conclusion

the "little lion" evokes an animal that's cute and endearing, but which can become ferocious and get out its claws. That's what the Benelli Leoncino is, easy but not bland, fun and far from ridiculous, playful but with a certain maturity, efficient and pleasant, and quite reasonable (6000 EUR).

with its pleasant lines, completely in tune with the times, halfway between a contemporary motorcycle and those of the '70s, it's sure to seduce.

i have a 2018 bought at the end of 2022 with 26000 km, ajd 38000 and apart from the routine maintenance that i do every 6000km (spark plugs, oils and filters° well that's just happiness. i'm holding my own against a lot of A2's with flanges Rating : 5/5

hello! bike bought new in december 2023 400 kms today, i think this bike is just canon, a real bike, the weak point the consumption announced is not real i'm rather at 5.2 l/100 driving at less than 4000t/m because of break-in. do you know if the fact that it is new can affect the consumption? will it consume less after a few thousand kms? I've just bought one. And it's new.
Let's be honest, in terms of finish, compared to my faithful and loyal Bandit 650 S, the little Italian-Chinese bike is much better finished
The original equipment is excellent: everything is LED, radial brakes, upside-down forks. Not bad for a basic bike
OK, it's not a spindly dancer like a KTM, but the balance is very good, and compared to my friendly Japanese anvil, I can finally zigzag between cars without breaking a sweat
I was hesitating with a CB500X, which was still more expensive, and above all had huge delivery delays due to the Black Death... The little 500 cc is also very nice. Is it the 360° timing? More fun than the 500 Honda
I know I'm taking a risk. But let's stop with this cliché: it's Chinese, so it's ####... For example, iphones are made in China. And that doesn't seem to shock Apple fans
In any case, by 2030, I won't be able to drive one anymore, thanks to the ZFE parigotte...

It's okay to make A2-approved 500s with 47.5 hp, but please make them leaner.
Under current regulations, the power-to-weight ratio must not be less than 3.5, so there's plenty of room
With 47.5 hp, you're entitled to a minimum of 167 kg, which is more than enough to ride a bike of this type safely.
It's all the more of a pity because the lines are quite nice and the price is right
It even looks a little like the Triumph Trident, which is 20 kg lighter.

1st bike and really satisfied... I feel good riding it (quiet or sporty) and it looks really nice in black! it purrs nicely, but fuel consumption is closer to 5l/100 than 4l!
Top speed 165 straight and 178 recumbent... :)

I said to myself ok why not
I rode it for about twenty kilometers, which was great, I thought it was great
And then nothing happened, it turned itself off without warning, so I restarted it
And then 5 kilometers further up the hill, same thing, nothing
I'm going to take it back to the garage but I'm disappointed

Hello bikers, a little comment on this bike because I just tried it this morning and I was very pleasantly surprised! The one I rode this morning had the arrow line and in addition to the sound it looked good in the city it's a bike at the stop idem it is handled really quiet, on roads it picks up enough to make a lot of kils in short for this price there will have to look far to find better! I've been a motorcyclist for 25 years. After two tests of this super cool bike. I noticed that the 4th gear wasn't shifting properly. So I downshifted to 3 and tried to shift to 4 but nothing happened, so I ended up stopping. And I'm back in 1,2,3,4,5,6, so the second try cooled me down a bit on the purchase, the gearbox seems a bit imprecise, and its price is indeed very interesting, but it's strange that the gears don't go up correctly after 3, recurrent fuel gauge problems are to be noted on the Italian benelli forum, i confirm the very poor quality of the paintwork and welds, I'm in the trade, at 6200 euros it's still a nice sum, to think about used ducats scrambler or street twin, more expensive of course but which will remain qualitative over time, and resellable, when is it the leoncino? Rating : 4/5
i had the opportunity to test drive this 500 Leoncino and was surprised by its beautiful sound and pleasant ride in town. The bike is so pleasant that you have to turn the handle. 15 extra horsepower would have been the icing on the cake. I say Bravo Benelli. Rating : 5/5

After 17 years without a motorcycle (before 1200 bandit), at the age of 65 I took it up again, for a while, with an efficient and beautiful machine in mind. Good braking and handling, engine full of gusto, small downside, very short gears, so above 120 you're looking for a 7th.
Longer gears 5 and 6 would be welcome. But it's not a tourer either.
