Road test of Cagiva125 SUPERCITY 1998 The first time, always intense

Our tester's opinion on the 125 SUPERCITY from 1998

riding the SuperCity was my 1st experience on a motorcycle. It came as quite a surprise: high up, you can dominate the road as if from a watchtower, and you soon feel at ease thanks to the natural riding position. The design is Italian, which is to say very pleasing, and the battle gear is astonishing for a 125: inverted fork, huge front brake disc, Brembo brakes, reinforced swingarm; it has to be said that the beast develops more than 35 horsepower unbridled. But you have to go and get it. The engine's power only comes into its own at higher revs, giving you a little kick in the butt at around 8,000 rpm, which isn't unpleasant. The machine launches easily and you reach 140 without difficulty. You'll have to get up to the next few km/h, but try to find a trail bike with a 170 speedometer. Once on the bends, the trail feels more like a sports bike, and its roadholding is highly effective (with a 160 rear wheel, it can hold its own on the pavement). In a duo, however, this enthusiasm is not shared by the passenger, who is not really comfortable. Comfort is precarious, the saddle slippery, and it's easy to get bloated. This little flaw aside, the SuperCity is an astonishing 125 - the best 125, I'd be tempted to say!

Crazy braking (stoppies galore!), dragster acceleration if you hit the revs, sporty handling...
In winter, I'd cover up the radiator a bit to get it to heat up faster (short trips), and the trip from home to work and back felt like a Grand Prix qualifier.
But raw pleasure comes at a price, brake pads every 2,500km, chain and tire kit (front and rear!) 5,000km, I'd put a rear tire a hair higher and 1 tooth less on the sprocket, it didn't grind in 7th gear but still took the red even when not lying down! 165 on the clock...
All (yes ALL!) the gears pulled at over 12,000rpm on every outing ended in a broken linkage, but what bike would have stood the revs (pun intended) for almost 10,000km?
A 100% pleasure bike in full power mode! but absolutely not economical, you have to know what you want and assume it.
In bridled mode, it should be indestructible, provided it's maintained as a 2T should be. Rating : 5/5 Respond to LaurentH

breathtaking starting performance for a 125
impeccable handling Rating : 5/5 Respond to gege90
it's full power 34hp for 165km/h maximum... Even the Aprilia RS125, which has 34hp but is fairing, goes up to 174km/h.... I challenge anyone to do 180km/h with their Supercity! Rating : 5/5 Respond to Nicolas
