presentation of the 1690 SOFTAIL SLIM FLS 2012
since the second decade of the 21st century, Harley-Davidson has been repackaging its post-war history in a variety of ways. The Slim is yet another example. At that time, bikers removed all superfluous items from their machines to keep only the essentials. Milwaukee tries to clean up this FLS in the same way, with a solo seat, less chrome, a truncated rear mudguardthe front fender is halved, the tires are narrow and the rims are very airy (the Fat Boy has full rims). Stripped down in this way, the Slim loses around ten kilos, gains tenebrity and looks cool. But for a bobber, it still packs too many accessories. We appreciate the Hollywood handlebars with reinforcement bar, the leather strap on the tank and the half-moon running boards... But do these elements, as well as the cowling and fork covers, have their place on a custom that aims to be uncluttered? Unless it's part of an unlikely new trend: the accessorized bobber. That would be nonsense. The slim is not a pure bobber, but a machine with a bobber look, nuance.
beneath the enormous tank, topped by a cat-eye console, the pulses come from the heart of the bike: the big 1690 cm3 twin-cylinder Twin Cam 103B. The B stands for a number of engine features. Rigidly mounted in the hardtail frame, it is equipped with a balancer to reduce vibrations. Fat throughout, it delivers over 13 mkg of torque. Harley wants to show more of this schizophrenic beef heart. Designer Casey Ketterhagen puts it this way:it's time to let the engine take its rightful place. That's why we've put the Softail on a diet to reduce its proportions. Reduce the scale of the rear with a narrow tire, and your eyes are automatically drawn to the center of the bike.'
Too bad! If the eye is drawn to the center of the Slim, why smear the mechanics in black? It's not the engine you're looking at, it's just the cylinder head covers and gearbox housings.
i can see your eyes twitching... For you, the essential thing is not there, but in the guttural thrust of the American twin-cylinder, in the solitary pleasure of being on the road. The Slim is an exclusive machine, with only the rider seated low to the ground (650 mm seat height).
