presentation of the 1890 Chief Bobber Dark Horse 2023
We 're faced with a moment of ambiguity. How can this Chief be called a Bobber when the Chief itself has become a bobber? Is the name just one facet? Is Springfield's custom revival swimming against the tide? Wanting to be reduced to the essentials while retaining an idea of imposing presence helps to provoke a hell of a lot of brain-juice. Okay, this Dark Horse Chief Bobber won't sit still.
Let's continue with the nonsense. This kind of machine is supposed to be as uncluttered as possible. Yet the Dark Horse Bobber is fitted with trim pieces that the Chief couldn't care less about. Styling takes control, with streamlined forks and shocks, a headlight pod, spoked rims and a big front tire that seems to square the road.
But where the bike clearly makes its presence felt is in the riding position it offers the rider.
The Ape-Hanger handlebars put your arms over the horizon, while the advanced footpegs allow you to bring your boots right up to the edge of the frame. So, now we're into custom-culture. We're going to roll out some bad-tempered street cowboy, with metallic, gargled belches. Now it's time for the big twin-cylinder Thunderstroke.
This engine now cubes 1890 cm3, or 116 cubic inches for the Americans. Power doesn't like to be expressed in horsepower on this type of engine. What's important is torque, the power this Chief can deliver and the emotions it arouses. Thrusting out 16.5 mkg at 3,200 rpm, the heart of the bike puts on even more muscle than its predecessor, but goes for the maximum higher up the rev range. This block can deactivate its rear cylinder if required, to prevent things from getting too hot under the straps.
In front of this huge metal body, it's hard to believe that the clutch has softened. But that's where Indian's attention was focused in 2023. A little more flexibility and less effort in the left hand for more relaxed gear shifting.

Does it get any more bobber than this? We've become accustomed to this kind of eugenics, lyrical naming and flavored presentation.
There's only one way to really grasp it: take it out alone between the night of the streetlamps and the character of the asphalt. That's if you're willing to pay a hefty premium over the Chief.
