MXGP and MX2 championships: atmosphere and fun back!

With no MotoGP this weekend, all eyes were on the Czech Republic, which hosted the MXGP and MX2 championships.

MX2: Czech Republic hosts the weekend

In addition to WorldSBK Superbike, motocross races were held in the Czech Republic this weekend. In MX2, Sacha Coenen took the first holeshot of the day, but the race was brought to a halt by a red flag following a heavy crash by Jack Chambers. The American made a point of being reassuring on his various communication channels as he left hospital.

On the restart, Sacha Coenen again got the better of his brother Lucas, followed by Rick Elzinga. Lucas, who had won the qualifiers ahead of his brother, would take over after the latter's crash. Simon Laengenfelder managed to hold on to second place, followed by Kay de Wolf, Mikkel Haarup, and Liam Everts.

Andrea Adamo: the reigning champion on the mat

It's easy to forget (although we weren't getting our hopes up) that Andrea Adamo is the reigning champion. Unfortunately, he seems to have conceded it for good. Victim of a crash that aggravated an injury sustained that very morning, the Italian rider left with stitches in his torso, but no broken bones. The second round was therefore run without the reigning champion.

Like his brother earlier in the weekend, Lucas had to endure the rigors of the Loket track as he chased down the leading trio of Liam Everts, Simon Laengenfelder and Kay de Wolf. Simon Laengenfelder managed to overtake Liam Everts, but could do nothing against Kay de Wolf's comeback and his red plate in the final minutes.

Loket MX2 Grand Prix standings (Top 5):

Kay de Wolf takes his 13th career win, bringing his total number of victories this season to eight, and extends his championship lead to 46 points. Simon Laengenfelder and Lucas Coenen complete the MXGP Czech Republic podium in MX2. Quentin Prugnières and Thibault Benistant did not take part...

1. Kay de Wolf - 45 points;
2. Simon Laengenfelder - 44 p.;
3. Lucas Coenen - 43 p.;
4. Liam Everts - 36 p. ;
5. Mikkel Haarup - 34 p.

MXGP Czech Republic summary

Absent since the German GP at the beginning of June, Romain Febvre made his return to competition alongside Benoit Paturel, the other French rider. The latter distinguished himself by coming third out of the first corner, but was no match for Jorge Prado and Jeffrey Herlings. Herlings surprised Prado and flew to victory. Tim Gajser, back in the race, took third place.

Broadening our perspective, we see that Frenchmen Romain Febvre and Benoit Paturel finished in the top 7, behind Jeremy Seewer, author of the holeshot, and Calvin Vlaanderen.

For the second round, the drivers in the top 5 remained unchanged, with one exception: Febvre took 5th place from Seewer. As a result, the positions remain in a state of flux. It has to be said that for winner J.Herlings, the race had to be run differently after two crashes and a delay accumulated on the first lap. Gajser finished in the lead, ahead of Prado and an impressive Jeffrey Herlings, who had come back from a long way behind.

Gajser-Prado-MXGP-Loket-2024Gajser and Prado elbowed their way to victory.

From nothing to everything, or rather from (almost) nothing to everything?

Criticism was rife after the two Indonesian rounds, the last of which took place 15 days ago. Fortunately, the performances in Loket were very different, on a concrete track as complex as ever, as Gajser points out: “I don't like riding on this track, but I'm not giving up, so this first victory in many years...!” He signs his first Grand Prix victory on Czech soil, becoming the 51ᵉ winner since 1995.
