presentation of the SPx 2024
Peugeot was one of the greatest motorcycle manufacturers France has ever known. Among its iconic successes was a little machine that marked several generations and was in almost every household: the 103. A two-wheeler for teenagers (and not just teenagers) that has been through every odyssey from 1971 to 2006. The Peugeot 103 was the beginning of the motorized adventure for millions of people.
The lion-faced marque is preparing its comeback. This time in electric format. The SPx concept unveils the contours of the future "103", with a few clever ideas and an equivocal design.
Subtle yet obvious, the family resemblance is undeniable. Nostalgia is present, but not in the majority of revivals. The headlight takes up the stylistic codes of Peugeot's cars, with a luminous claw already present on the PM-01.
The SPx is built on an aluminum monocoque structure. On this prototype, the chassis would be the stuff of dreams for motorcycles of all sizes. A Fior-type fork up front and a monobar at the rear ensure a first-rate look. These elements will certainly not be found on the base version of the SPx; but as the machine is designed to be highly modular, there's every reason to imagine them on a premium version.
After all, Peugeot doesn't want to sell a cyclo or a motorcycle, but an evolving machine. The SPx should be available in several power levels (equivalent to 50 and 125?) and adaptable to users' desires. An ingenious idea found on all bikes, the saddle varies (greatly) in height as it is mounted on a stem. An additional battery pack can be fitted between the handlebars and the saddle; and from here, we can speculate on the possibility of a storage space. It would also be possible to add components to turn it into a pseudo-scooter. In short, Sochaux has plenty of ideas for the after-market.
Not a word about electric motorization or performance. All we know is that the two standard batteries will be removable, that Peugeot hopes to keep the weight down to 80 kilos, and that the electronics will not be exuberant in order to keep prices down.
It's still only a prototype. But it's advanced enough for Peugeot to expect it to go on sale in 2025.
The SPx also aims to keep up with the times, with the use of recycled and recyclable materials, production in France (or assembly...), the doctrine of ecological transition, freedom, the responsibility of tomorrow, blah blah blah, non-gendered, non-binary, no fear, etc.
Peugeot wants to re-establish its place in the urban landscape; its SPx comes at just the right moment in a world undergoing profound change. Its 103 lineage is sure to appeal to a nostalgic audience. But to conquer the young market, it will have to keep its price in check, to perpetuate its heritage as an affordable machine and the first passport to freedom.
