a wind of freedom blew across California in 1963. And on this American zephyr rides a legendary machine: the Royal Enfield Interceptor. Its 736 cm3 twin-cylinder engine is its best asset for forging commercial success.

in 2018 , the Indian manufacturer decided to reconquer the West with an eponymous machine, equipped with a new 648 cm3 twin. Authentic is the right word to describe this new Interceptor. Both in terms of the brand's historical legitimacy and the new model's aesthetic and mechanical pedigree.

the Indian beauty has retained its Californian "coolness", and you can immediately sense its philosophy of no headaches and the future is today. Let's live now. Simple yet dynamic, the 13.7-liter can mimics the 1963 model. More rounded, its curves bear the Indian manufacturer's reworked metal emblem. A long, flat seat, wide handlebars with raised horns, chrome mirrors and a passenger grab handle... The essentials are there to take you out for a spin, alone or in pairs. The Interceptor offers a more relaxed riding position. Its wide handlebars, reinforced by a crossbar, naturally accommodate the hands. The cool roadster's thick seat adjusts its height to 804 mm from the ground. The triangle of handlebars, footpegs and seat doesn't require any strenuous gymkhana. What's more, despite its imposing engine, the machine is particularly narrow and accessible. Surrounded by chrome-plated plastic, the analog instruments are pleasantly designed and easy to read, if not fun. Tachometer on the right and, on the left, in the tachometer block, a digital window displays a fuel gauge and, successively, via a discreet button, the odometer and two partials.

the Interceptor shares every mechanical and chassis feature with its Continental GT counterpart. Compact and narrow, the machine features the double-cradle tubular steel frame designed by Harris. This 20.4 kg structure supports the new Indian twin: a very attractive 648 cm3 (78 x 67.8 mm) parallel twin. With polished aluminum side cases and head covers, and a massive cylinder head sliced with large cooling fins, the 70 kg Enfield block impresses with its size and stylish presence.

it ' s simple, air- and oil-cooled,yet incorporates a high-performance top end. Its 4 valves per cylinder are driven by a single camshaft. A technical refinement, the rocker arms feature wheels at the point of contact with cams with slightly concave surfaces. The oil circuit is optimized, with jets targeting the hottest spots in the cylinder head. The oversized, forged crankshaft and its imposing masses are combined with a second balance shaft with two balancing weights. This ensures good vibrations on the West Coast.

Royal-Enfield 650 Interceptor twin injection units and ignition are controlled by Bosch electronics. The cigar-style mufflers, raised up to the sky and integrating the catalytic converters, add dynamism. The twin Enfield develops 47 hp at 7,150 rpm and 5.2 daNm of torque at 5,150 rpm. Maybe not enough to intercept your buddies, but the Interceptor is sure to capture hearts. The block exudes the stylish charm of a large air-oil engine. And its super-square bore/stroke ratio augurs well for its liveliness. With 80% of its maximum torque from 2,300 rpm, it allows you to move into fourth gear or higher on a trickle of throttle, at just over 2,000 rpm. The Euro 5-approved powertrain has not undergone any major changes - only the maximum rpm required to reach maximum power and torque values has been modified: 100 rpm earlier.
A new 6-speed gearbox, dedicated to the engine, features an assisted limited-slip clutch. Vintage with a contemporary twist.

the suspension is simple yet effective. For added style, the non-adjustable 41 mm telescopic fork hides its plungers behind bellows. Its travel is 110 mm. It's combined with dual 88 mm sliding shock absorber units, with adjustable preload. The 18-inch tubuless aluminum-alloy rims are shod with 100 and 130 mm Pirelli Phantom sportscomp tires . A far cry from the usual dimensions of 500 or 750 cm3 roadsters.. . and all the better for agility. A two-channel Bosch ABS controls the work of the Bybre calipers (a sub-brand of Brembo). At the front, two pistons squeeze a single 320 mm disc, while the opposite single-piston retarder squeezes a 240 mm shrink disc.

the attractive Interceptor is equipped with a passenger roll bar, a center stand and a handle near the saddle for easy maneuverability. The Indian's finish is very acceptable, both in terms of component quality and assembly. The levers are not adjustable in spacing, but their dimensions seem ideal for all sizes. Frame welds are acceptable and unobtrusive. The only minor regret is that the paintwork could be sharper. More annoying is the presence of a plastic front mudguard instead of a metal one, and an empty space behind the cylinder block where a hose also appears. More qualitative, we appreciate the front headlight encircled by brushed metal and the rubber-covered rider and passenger footrests. The layout of the various components is unobjectionable, as are the different coatings on the metal parts and supports.

last but not least, there are no reliability concerns in sight: numerous long-term tests were carried out in India and Europe, more in keeping with the rhythmic use of these machines. In addition, the 650 Twin pre-production machines underwent two 6-hour checks at 1007 static and dynamic points, by two different operators, and the brand guarantees its machines for three years .

with its new Interceptor, Royal Enfield has created a modern machine, the basis for the future development of numerous models.... Designed for everyday use as well as for cool, far-flung rides, this 650 takes you back in time to a bygone age, but one that's oh so profitable. Let's the good time roll!

Gearbox problem
French Chipie Model 2023
As a recent owner of a 650 interceptor, it's pretty hard to rate it: (solo and duo) - Handling (Michelin Road Classic): holds up well - Shocks and forks: no worries on rough country roads (solo and duo) - Seat: the original was a real "piece of wood", and we replaced it with a much more comfortable "touring" saddle - Handling (on the move and when stationary): It handles like a bike, and the turning radius and seat height make maneuvering much easier.
- Luggage: The rear-mounted buckets limit the choice of panniers (they touch...) with the right capacity. (We don't want to equip it with a top case.) - Engine: Pure happiness, torque to spare, good vibrations for sensations, everything's good...! (We prefer it to our 750 gsxf, which is twice as powerful.) - Gearbox: This is where the problem lies: there's no gear indication (even if you can drive by ear). 5th gear hangs on and shifts with great difficulty, and 6th gear doesn't shift at all :-((......! On the other hand, I have no trouble finding neutral and the first gears go through without a hitch - To conclude: It's a "modern" millstone that provides "old-fashioned" sensations (I took my driving test in the early 80s). It's as utilitarian as it is leisurely, or even "grandpa-style". A very endearing bike from the very first turns of the wheel, for aficionados of cool rides with very decent comfort, or for commuting in fine weather (the lack of protection is cool in heatwaves, less so in rainstorms). It was the first bike the guy who sold it to us bought, and it will certainly be the last as far as we're concerned, as it ticks almost all the boxes in our specifications. The picture is marred by this :-(( gearbox, which really spoils the pleasure of riding..... and prevents me from giving it 5 stars!

I bought this bike second-hand a few months ago because I'd been dreaming of a Bonneville since I was a kid, but as I had to have an A2 license, it seemed inconceivable to me that I'd have to restrict it. So I went for the Interceptor and I don't regret my choice at all. This bike makes you want to take it easy and enjoy the sound of the Twin on the narrow roads of the Pyrenees, where I'm lucky enough to live. The only modification I made was to change the seat for a more comfortable one, otherwise the Interceptor is perfect as it is. As for minor faults, I'd like to mention the tank sensor, which takes on a life of its own and is not to be trusted (but you learn to manage your fuel level quickly without it), the lack of acceleration and the very leisurely acceleration that sometimes annoys some motorists in a hurry. Or the gearbox, which is a tad short and takes you into 6th gear very quickly. But in the end, all these faults are just points that make this bike even more endearing: a bike for touring and for those who like to take their time. Rating : 5/5
I've got the 2023 model, and it's a great bike, very beautiful and well finished! Pleasant to ride, I'm very happy with it, despite the throttle rage! Robert Rating : 5/5

am I the only one to find its overall lines unattractive? I can't explain it, but it's a bit "chunky", almost a little "sausage on dough". So do the saddle and handlebars. Is it just an impression or a real feeling? Maybe the low wheelbase and short travel are the cause? It's a real shame, because it's got a lot going for it.

The new Himalayan seems to be heading in that direction.

My comment on the bogus article, another bogus article on a machine not even tried, no interest it's just advertising for Royal Enfield, otherwise this bike is pretty but when the manufacturer puts horsepower in these engines that may interest me for now 47hp is marshmallow not a motorcycle. greetings Rating : 2/5

Superb bike, successful. RE has really moved upmarket and offers vintage motorcycles that really stand out from today's productions, which are a little too copy/paste. In response to Blob, even though he doesn't expect any response, and to all the "bikers" of the same ilk, you've got to stop with the pseudo-argument that "47 hp isn't a real motorcycle". 1 real motorcycle has 2 wheels, an engine and handlebars. 1 real motorcycle doesn't necessarily have to go from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds, and reach supersonic speeds.

We're now in 2025, and the days of "I open up and put everyone in danger on the road" (because I'm not a rider by any means, just a death-defying freak) are over . phew.

There are circuits to enjoy it at full throttle, and yes, in that respect, the Royal enfield won't do. But for EVERYONE else, the biker majority equipped with a brain, yes, this bike is just great.

Clarification: my comment in no way affects the biker who likes powerful sports bikes but who, unlike Blob obviously, takes the 47 hp for what they are: motorcycles, real motorcycles. No, I'm not frustrated, it's just that these remarks annoy me. Last thing: a motorcycle article, whether tried or not, is by definition an advertisement

Bravo juju74, completely agree with you, the motorcycle tares who think only horsepower, power and speed are out. Long live the motorcycle ride, because a 47hp, is and will always remain a MOTORCYCLE. Rating : 4/5

After 30,000 km of rides in the Vosges, I'm still in love with this bike, which takes me right back to the 70's, but with the reliability, road holding and braking of 2023. And what's more, it's so beautiful (chromed version) that it attracts the attention of much richer bikers. In short, total happiness! Rating : 5/5

gearbox a bit rough with short ratios (I fitted a gearbox output sprocket with an extra tooth and it goes to 4000 rpm in 6th gear, which is better) positioning too forward leaning for me (1m75) so I changed the bridges for the rest it's perfect for me!in particular, there's no vibration (I'm getting out of a pre-2003 harley) even in the wrists and mirrors, the engine is willing, the weight isn't felt, I'm not yet tired of the saddle and shocks ... and my wife doesn't even complain about the backward position of the calluses. A bike that gives you bananas..
Initially, I had seriously opted for a Triumph 900cc T100...but after a test ride a week ago, I fell for this neo-retro charmer, with its magnificent engine and real old-time lÔok, enriched by a very bewitching original exhaust note. A good bike with an efficient chassis, even when riding a duo at reasonable speeds. Its flaw if any...a hard seat that I'm going to have a saddler quickly reupholster in anticipation of the longtrips to come. I didn't find the mirrors all that "vibrant"

I don't regret the purchase
