presentation of the W 800 2022

The W 800 is the archetype of retro. It was there before the fashion... It is the mimetic descendant of the W 650 of the late 90s, also vintage... And the years glide by without a cold. A bit of renewal has been offered, in the form of two evolutionary versions. Not enough to satisfy enthusiasts. This is one of the gageures of the Street / Café dyad. Each offered its own (typical) vision of the W 800, but none completely revisited the recipe that the previous model had left under the pillow in 2016.

Let's call it Standard, or Classic, or W 800 for short. Only the one shown here and today can defend its reputation and put its two runners-up in their place. All the little differences between the Street and Café disappear, and we're back to the panoply of a not-so-distant past.

Key points? The front wheel. The 19-inch diameter is back. The center stand is back as standard. The turn signals have been beefed up to give them a diameter as big as in the good old days. Then we come to an equivocal element: the handlebars. A roadster-type element, to offer a natural riding position in the vein of this machine. This is also how the other versions of the W family are differentiated: with its Upright handlebars, the Street offers a more cruising profile; the Café plays Clubman, sporty look and tried-and-tested wrists. Let's not end this inspection without noting the front mudguard, more present than the minimalist element of the other Ws.

Of the three, the "Classic" is undeniably the most attractive. Or the most enticing... You don't even have to start the engine to find that passionate, retro, prim and proper feel. Chromium plating all over the place, an English-style paint job, a fuel tank with more qualitative badges than the stickers on the other versions, flashier mirrors, a padded seat with delicate white edging, and an engine full of the past all use their assets to turn memories to the road.

Then comes the moment when the propeller reveals itself. The Japanese vertical twin reminds us of the Triumph Bonneville - but it's the 1965 W1 650 it refers to. It hasn't changed much since the old W 800, and Kawa has mainly adapted it to E5 standards. Nothing has changed in terms of power, with a maximum of 48 hp. Torque has improved slightly, from 6.1 to 6.4 mkg, but its peak is much higher than before - at almost twice the rpm. The manufacturer has also fitted an "Assist & Slipper" clutch, which is easier to grip and anti-dribble to cope with violent downshifts.

forget the Fast & Furious mode, go for a leisurely stroll, period charm and relaxed tempo. That's what the W 800 is for, and not really for keeping up with the big time. Although its chassis has been reworked with a revised frame, larger-diameter forks, a rear disc brake and ABS, this "old-school" roadster only aims to improve its performance, not transform it.

The W 800, whether classic, Street or Café, has a special technical feature that cannot leave any mechanical enthusiast unmoved: its bevel-gear drivetrain. It's a set of gears that deserves to be exposed... or rather, under a transparent cloche to appreciate its workmanship and style.

It's good to see the real W 800 back in the catalog. Its plastic looks are as appealing as ever, even though its price has undergone detrimental inflation. Compared to a 900 Bonneville T100 or a Ducati 800 Scrambler, it's no easy task. But the W800 also tells a story, with the Meguro manufacturer hidden between the pages.

Yesterday I signed up for a w 800 2026.....
French johny speed Model 2025
Yes, farewell to my trusty CB 1100 RS, a great bike (a little tear), but it had become too heavy for me at low speeds (shoulder tendonitis problem), and yes, at 72 years old, it's all downhill from here (lol).
Let's talk about this 2026 Kawasaki W800, in black and gold, very classy like the bike itself. It's so beautiful, I fell in love with it. Nostalgia strikes again, taking me back to little trips around my beautiful region of the Opal Coast.
Having owned one in 2011, I know it well, so hello torque, hello 360-degree engine noise, hello drive shaft, goodbye timing chain, hello reliability and economy.

As for comfort, it's top notch, like in the heyday of the 1300 Kawa, 1100 Yamaha, and 650 XS Yamaha (also 360 degrees).

I can't wait to get back on it, to feel the wind on my face, far from the fear of speed cameras and accidents, a peaceful ride, without the urge to speed like I did with my CB 1100 (110 hp at 20,000 km, insane torque).

But everything comes to an end, I'm getting older, so back to my fantastic 70s and 80s, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Simon and Garfunkel, etc., in a timeless style with the chrome reflecting off my graying temples.

What if happiness was about cherishing your best memories through machines that remind you of your younger years?

Have a good trip, everyone, be careful... and take good care of yourselves and your families in these troubled times...

Should I sell my cb 1100 rs for the w 800?
French johny speed Model 2025
Hello, I'm in doubt, my cb 1100 rs is perfect, superior in every way to the w 800, yes, but that's the problem, too perfect, it lacks that extra soul, the nostalgia side, the old-timer side, mine is neo retro, am I going to enjoy this w 800 bike knowing that it makes 46 hp and the Honda 1100 95 hp with insane torque, exceptional flexibility, in 6 to 2000 rpm it starts again without coughing.... I'm 72 years old, so what can I do, go back to my first love (the '99 w 650), and what's more, you can hardly go fast anymore, so tell me, friends, I'm a bit lost. Merry christmas to all, a w 800 (model 2026 in pearly white) under the tree?

Merry Christmas to all.

Retro, Japanese reliability, Ducati-style single-cylinder or old twin-cylinder technology (actuation by conical shaft), nothing to do with British rocker armatures, but elitist pricing Rating : 4/5
Moto à l'ancienne poussée à son paroxysme
I bought one two years ago and quickly sold it. Japanese quality is irreproachable, the engine has a lot of length, etc. But Kawasaki's engineers felt obliged to fit it with wooden shock absorbers, so that it could be used as a crutch on the central unit, which is badly positioned. It's a pity, because it's really retro and not really neo.
For the enthusiasts, it's a true retro. Well, on a positive note, it's beautiful! As for the naysayers who think it's too expensive, let them tell themselves that it's not a chinoiserie, a vulgar copy... BSA and Kawasaki have a shared history with MEGURO. Once again, it's a shame about the shock absorbers and the center stand

2021 Kawasaki W800 The shocks need replacing. At 68,000 km, I've fitted EMCs and the bike is much more pleasant to ride on rough surfaces. As for the center stand, it's much better since I've taken up weight training. This bike is outrageously expensive; like a Monet or a Van Gogh. Buy it like you would a work of art. Rating : 5/5
French Chris Model 2025
Although priced at the upper end of the range, the driving pleasure provided by the long-stroke, air-cooled engine, its torque from low revs and its unique bevel-bevel drivetrain are unrivalled. The high level of Japanese finishing and its reliability/robustness certainly make it one of the best neo-retros on the market. Vintage English driving pleasure with today's reliability: a total success. Rating : 5/5
French Philippe Model 2024
Nice bike, but overpriced. Might as well go for a Triumph Bonneville. Rating : 2/5
French Henri
3.6 liters in respectful driving; 4.5 liters in joyful driving. A rear tire (Michelin Road Classic) covers 30,000 km and a front tire 50,000. It doesn't consume oil between 2 oil changes. You're not tempted to drive very fast. Well, it's cheap to maintain... Rating : 5/5
French wILLY Model 2023
It's a very nice bike for people like me who like retro. As for the purchase price, you might as well buy a T100 Bonneville from Triumph. These days, you have to be reasonable and not go overboard. Yes, I own a T100, so I know what I'm talking about. But you have to admit that the W is really nice, but no more so than the Triumph. Thank you. Rating : 2/5

French Model 2022
11,000 for a lung is 2,000 too much. At 9,000, it'd be a nice bike, but that's just too much. Rating : 3/5
French
A lung compared to the T100! You looked at the power-to-weight ratio and the top speed ... the comparison is not in Triumph's favor Rating : 4/5
French
Obviously, it's a lung if you get out of a Hayabusa. It's better to drive a 48 hp that lives than a 4-legged one that doesn't give you any feeling. Personally, mine is 3 years old and 70,000 km and it's a pleasure to drive that doesn't wear out. Rating : 5/5
French
And the Triumph isn't very powerful, but at 65 hp it's more than 48, and the torque is 8.2 (at 3800 rpm) compared with 6.4 at 1000 rpm, and the weight is still very close, 228 for 221 km. It's true that the little Kawa can go 10 km faster!!.. You have to be careful when reading the graphs, as it's weight per horsepower and weight per torque, so the smaller the number, the better the performance, e.g. an R1 that would be 170 kg for 170 hp would be 1, or the little bomb that it is! Rating : 4/5
French Alain Model 2021
Magnificent vintage bike, ridden the old-fashioned way, it's the queen of the ballad, with sufficient torque and very pleasant to ride. To tell you the truth, I live in Corsica, and it's top notch in terms of ease of riding and power on the winding roads of nostrale. Rating : 5/5
French JF
I couldn't agree more with Alain! My 2017 W800 is based in Monticello, where I have a house, and every time I come to Corsica I treat myself to some magnificent rides with this bike, which is ideal for Corsican roads! I also have a Royal Enfield Interceptor on the mainland, but it's a notch below that! And so is the price... Ps: I've been a motorcyclist since 1966 and I really appreciate these neo retros, which are a good reminder of the thrills of the crazy 60s and 70s! Rating : 5/5
