presentation of the DL 650 V-STROM 2006

when Suzuki embarked on the big road trail, it didn't set the benchmark, but it did create a very nice, sporty machine. But where the manufacturer really comes into its own is with this little 650 V-strom devil. Identical to the 1000, its appearance is unmistakable. Lower in the saddle, it should be easier to handle. Suspension travel has been significantly reduced, with the machine dropping 20mm. Riders will be delighted by the manually adjustable bubble, the wide seat and, above all, the mill, which is identical to that of the SV 650. A benchmark! On the DL 650, the camshafts have been modified, the airbox has been enlarged, and the moving parts have been made heavier, all to enhance the power curve at low and mid-rpm. Knowing the twin's particularly pleasant and playful behavior, we're salivating in anticipation! Passengers won't be outdone either, with a welcoming seat, well-designed grips and footrests, and a practical, easy-to-use rear shock adjuster. The new dashboard is very complete - in fact, its big brother will be borrowing it for 2004,SUZUKI DL 650 V-STROM as will its windscreen. Here's a formidable competitor for the Honda Transalp, especially as the Suzuki trail bike should deliver 15 hp more than its rival. The frame of the little V-strom is similar to that of the big one: an aluminum perimeter, and with identical tires (110 front and 150 rear), the little devil should be particularly agile and efficient. Quick, lend me one...!

on the technical side, the machine is less impressive than its big sister. that's reassuring for would-be adventurers, but seen from the front and not on glossy paper, the DL 650 still looks pretty tough. The small dose of apprehension at this moment will vanish in 30 seconds. Light and welcoming, the machine is as agile as a BMX. The lower, slimmer seat than on the 1000 is much appreciated by medium-sized riders at stoplights. Praise for Suzuki's little twin has never dried up, and it won't stop with this trail bike. Flexibility remains impressive up to 4th gear, and much more exploitable than the 1000 up to 6th. The new valve train has taken away some of the rawness of the high revs... to offer more gniak in the mid-range. When it comes to winding through mountainous switchbacks, the DL 650 is sumptuous. You can open the throttle without restraint, the twin picks up low, then pulls with gusto. Thanks to the smoothness of the engine/gearbox/controls team, you never have to fight; you just enjoy the ride. Especially as handling is excellent, even prodigious for a trail bike - and there's the rub: the suspension favours efficiency over comfort, especially as the lower withers height ofSUZUKI DL 650 V-STROM reduces the travel of the suspension. More or less annoying depending on your back and road conditions, but if you want to play a little... It's also a pity that the hand protectors of the 1000 have disappeared. They protect you from the cold, and from branches if you take roads you've forgotten. The brakes are identical to the big brother, but more efficient without being aggressive. Which is just as well: we're riding a trail bike, not a GSX-R (which would certainly be less festive)! Venturing out for long stages is a thrill. Firstly, the DL's philosophy invites you to do so, and secondly, with a protective fork head, an adjustable bubble (you need to get out the tools - but no competitor of this size offers them), a GT range and dormant vibrations, you're going to carve up the road. We'd like cocktails like this more often.

it's my second V-Strom, my first had been exchanged with a 900 diversion !!! I came back to it for a bunch of advantages that few bikes collect... lightness, ease, comfort (even for the passenger), easy and willing engine... this bike can take you to the end of the world !!! Rating : 4/5

after 3 V-strom 650 (2010,2018,2021) i switched to a new 1000 (2022). disappointed by the 1000, i came back on a used 650 from 2006. after 96 bikes during my life (i'm 70 years old and a collector) i can certify that the 650 V-strom is for me the best bike in terms of safety and riding pleasure. too bad its braking isn't up to the 1000's, but the weight/power ratio is much better... Une excellente moto pour débutant et expérimenté pour tout usages !
French Kirill_Abrull Model 2005
I've owned a K5 model for 7 months now, and it's a real road bike. I had a 2015 Varadero 125 that's very similar in terms of ergonomics and riding pleasure (without the high weight and power that go with it, of course), and it has many advantages and few shortcomings (although it does have some), it's not hard-hitting, it's not dazzling, it's not passionate or kick-ass, it's very linear when it picks up, it's not violent, it's a bit heavy to maneuver at low speeds (tastes and colors don't matter, personally I like the look of it!), but it's healthy, willing, its chassis is sound, its engine is solid and full all over, it tows well and is very progressive on acceleration without fuss, economically easy to maintain/low maintenance cost, you can put over 100,000 KM on it without any problem, easy to use for a beginner or an experienced old hand, and 34CV bridleable for young licensees who want a Trail to recommend without hesitation without moderation!

The plusses : : Riding position : Large 22L fuel tank (400Km average range before reserve if you're careful!) : Torque present at low revs (3500 rpm) - Tracts very efficiently from 5000/6000 rpm : Linear engine : Efficient engine braking : Stable at high speeds on freeways : Very good acceleration pick-up : Leans very well in bends without forcing: Good comfort for two-up riding : Very agile for its weight : Threads well between tracks : Easy maintenance and low cost : Excellent reliability The -s : : Its weight at idle : Engine knocks below 2500 rpm : Linear engine : Original bubble not very protective : Tool-free adjustable bubble!? : Original saddle that hurts after 2 hours of riding : Saddle is a headache to put back in place : Oil change every 6,000 km : Inter-files with suitcases : High saddle for those under 1.70 m : Tricky fuel gauge : Optional ABS for versions K4 to K7 (standard ABS from version K8 upwards).

Bought new in 2009 and resold in 2013, this bike is excellent for long-distance riding, in the mountains, comfortable and reliable
The only major drawback is its above-average wind resistance, which means you have to reduce speed considerably in strong winds, as is often the case in the south of France
So many great memories with this bike, which took us to the south of Spain without a hitch, and over a wide variety of roads
For even greater comfort, the next bike was a 1200 GS.

mick63 , in my opinion it's not suitable for you. I'm 1m87 and I bought mine which has a hollowed out seat and shorter links
Even so, it's adapted to my height. A 1.75m friend of mine got on it and had trouble touching his toes
Some might say that once you've got past the 1st one, there's no problem, but in my opinion, you'll be in trouble at every stop
The V Strom is clearly a bike for grown-ups.

French Éric le Valett Model 2010
Hello everyone, when I passed my A2 in 2017, I wanted, after reading many positive reviews a 650 Freewind. Finally my choice fell on its competitor BMW F650 strada with which I enjoyed during my 2 years of A2. Still, I was a little sorry not to have followed my initial choice of the Freewind, so much "loved" via reviews, videos, the press etc... Yet the BMW is a very pleasant bike, and its qualities are certainly close to those of the Suzuki.

Validation of the A in hand, here again I had a first choice: Honda's NCX 750. Why was this? For its economy and practicality, with its helmet-mounted tank... Well, that's not enough, and besides, it's only got about 50 hp... Not much more than a BMW.

Then I started looking at other bikes, including the V-strom, which I found very ugly in photos, as the front end reminded me too much of a scooter.

Then I saw it in real life and thought, well, it's not bad after all... In any case, when you're on the handlebars, you can't see the look of the bike.

So, as with the Freewind, I began to take an interest in the V-strom, and there it was: 99.9% of positive reviews, whether from testimonials on the net, test videos from motorcycle professionals, enthusiasts, the French press or others, were unanimous: the V-strom is the queen of medium-displacement road trails, just like Honda's Varadero 125.

So I decided to sell my F650, and 6 days after placing the ad on le coin bon, on Saturday June 29, 2019, the BMW was sold.

On Monday evening, July 1, a V-strom 650 with low kilometers is in my garage.
Good equipment and ABS.

It wasn't easy for me to get to grips with the handlebars, as they're massive compared with my little BMW, which looks like a 125 compared with the V-strom.

However, once you've got past the first one, the V-strom becomes easy to ride and, above all, a pleasure to ride in comfort ðŸ' it's a rolling sofa. The engine is smooth and the sound is muffled, which is all to the good: with the helmet in jet mode, I can hear the cicadas lol.

So far, I've covered 150 kilometers on this bike, and I'm starting to get the hang of it.

I'm not looking for speed, just grip, suppleness and comfort, and the V-strom delivers. It's a really good bike. I enjoy riding it every time, and I don't regret my purchase.

i bought it for 2500e second hand with a bit of aprehension as I'd just bought a 600 fazer and a 650 djebel...

Bought on May 15th, I set off for Spain on the 27th to ride the Bardenas... 2300 km in total, with 500 on freeways, 700 on mountains and bends, 300 on tracks and the rest on country roads. For the first time ever, I rode the bike for 5 hours straight without feeling sick, and after a good shower, I'm up to speed... What a pleasure, correct acceleration, roadholding (new trailsmarts) never faulted, even in stormy weather... to try it is to adopt it! Rating : 4/5

32 years on the road, I don't count the kils, 18 motorcycles from 50 ccm to 1200 ccm, from 7 to 130 hp, all japs and R and K behemoths, it's by far my best mount as a relaxed and well-travelled biker.

My DL-650 (K6) majestically reflects the word "panacea" when it comes to motorcycles. Comfortable, economical, well thought-out, a sumptuous engine (from the famous SV) that's both smooth and torquey at low revs and can be racy at higher revs, damping and frame worthy of a 1000 and not far from a GS (by the way, identical to the 1000!).

Alone or in pairs, we can take our 3 42-liter Givis on weekend trips up to 15 days without blushing or lagging behind bigger bikes.

Finally, on the budget side, a 3\'500 euro used car with 17\'000km on the odometer. Tires that last 15,000 km (Michelin Anakee II), fuel consumption like a camel, the best deal of my life that I would only change for .... another DL ;-)

The only legitimate gripe is the engine speed above 120 km/h (130 km/h with a 14-tooth output sprocket), which sends out a few vibrations. It's not a highway cruiser.

Last but not least, a well-stocked and generous aficionados' site (dl650.org)

I think dj34 that your dl is bridled.having done the same operation as you except 600 fazer I don't regret it at all.less top speed than the fazer but more torque at mid-range without being obliged to be always at donf in the turns it becomes quickly tiresome.the speed being limited more and more on our roads and controlled I prefer torque and a cruising speed more than satisfactory (150 on freeway)with still reserve if need be

I've just come back from a 2-day duo tour (800 kms), and the comfort of the 650 dl is excellent.

And what can I say about its fuel consumption: for this 2-day ride, 4.1 liters per 100 kms. I'm a fairly flexible driver, and try my best to respect speed limits

i've just done 12,000 km on this "brave" machine (which now has 42,000 km). rather economical in fuel and maintenance, i'm thinking of keeping it, given the good compromise it represents. even if:- it's a bit heavy and high for my metre 70 and 65 kg
-it's not very comfortable on the trails (but that doesn't mean you can't ride it)
-the aerodynamics of the bubble are horrible (must change)
-the handling disappointed me (compared to my ex-freewind, which I regret having sold)

overall, a good machine, rewarding for its size and performance. and since it's reliable, you need to keep it a long time to enjoy its qualities ;-)

Versatility is the key word for this bike (000 km in 9 months)

- Ideal for weaving in and out of traffic jams, it gives you the upper hand = safety

- I followed the "Joe Bar Team" one evening for a 200 km round trip with Ninja, GSXR and others... I didn't disappoint

- My wife is delighted and regularly calls on me for rides: 3 days planned in Aveyron this summer, and 3 days in Montpellier

She does everything, but my pet peeve is, when I'm on the run, to link up a series of bends on the small departmental roads (Dordogne)

Disadvantages: when riding as a duo, it's a cushy ride (but it suits my wife) and the bubble protects well, but creates turbulence and noise around the helmet.

well, here's a new fan of the v strom 650
I don't have it yet, but when I sat on it at the Brussels Motor Show in January 2006, I immediately realized that this bike was made for me (superb seating - good grip on the handlebars without any back curvature, as this is a big problem for me, etc.), as long trips on a sportbike leave me with backache following two falls and countless kilometers on this type of machine in various European countries. Now I've turned the corner, and I'm sure I won't need the countless sportbikes that have given me heart palpitations up to now. Now I'm waiting for it and I'll have it at the end of January. I can't wait because reading you makes the time seem long, and only then will I be able to confirm all the good things you say about it. Oh yes, I can't wait until July 2006 so I can go and try it out in the west of France for my vacations
You're all very nice and thank you for all your comments and advice on this machine. Keep up the good work and good luck to you all

As a young biker, I've had my license since July, and a Dl 650 too. More than 7000 km, and I'm amazed, it's progressing with me. Aesthetics are a matter of taste, but for once it's a trail bike with a lot of HP, a lot of throttle response and a lot of trunk space, solo or duo
As good says, the front wheel sometimes lacks a little grip, but that's all
It's just as pleasant on freeways, main roads, country roads or in town
In short, I like my Vstrom, and I'm not thinking of changing it just yet

I've had my DL 650 since August 2005. I covered 4500 km before storing it at the end of October for the winter. Magnificent machine. Light, intuitive, easy to handle, comfortable. Only flaw: insufficient bubble: I'm 1.85m tall. The installation of handguards has, however, curiously reduced turbulence significantly. Strange! My wife loves the rear seat, especially with the top case in place as a backrest. A bike I can recommend without hesitation, especially as the mechanics seem to be trouble-free, judging by the multitude of forums where no problems whatsoever have been mentioned. Rating : 5/5

In the space of a week, I've just tried out a 600 transalp (not bad, but not very exciting), a 900 tdm (great pick-up, no noise, gearbox that's finally smoother than on the 850, and very modern styling) and finally a vstrom 650.you could say that in terms of power, it's right up there between the transalp and the tdm 900.it's very easy to handle, smooth, well-balanced, and very beautiful (in black).I was mainly looking for a bike with a trail-type stance, and all three fit the bill.as for the rest, between the tdm and the vstrom, it's mainly a question of budget.sincerely, if my finances allow it, I'll go for the 900 tdm, otherwise it'll be the vstrom.the 600 transalp is still a good bike, but a bit outdated. for the moment, I own a Freewind with which I'm satisfied; my next choice will be the v-strom 650, in view of the comments and the test ride in moto 80. seen up close at my dealer: aggressive look, problem-free twin-cylinder engine, well thought-out purchase ... Rating : 5/5

i'm going to get my A licence soon, so let me have a second hand one in the Bas-Rhin. I've got a feeling that this bike is going to be a rare second-hand item if it's as bad as it looks. I've been eyeing it ever since I saw it on MJ Rating : 5/5
French roland Model 2003
It's a very maneuverable bike. I'm a leisure biker and I had a Honda 500CB, so I was surprised when I tested the DL. I went to a store to try it out. I bought it 3 months later, and I'm not disappointed. Very smooth and responsive when needed, with plenty of torque to boot. Thank you DL650 Rating : 5/5
French paspetit Model 2003
To the one who prefers the gsf600 bandit " dj34 " I had a vx-800 ( roadster from the early 90' based on the Intruder v-2 )and I switched to a Bandit 1200 , and I didn't like it . A four, as huge as it is, is boring & linear as a turbine, not melting, on this 1200, I had the impression that the throttle was a rheostat! I can't wait to get back on a v2, and that'll be the dl650, of course ( the gsf1200 was "overkill" all the same) so the dl-1000 doesn't appeal to me! Rating : 5/5
French loïc Model 2003
An excellent machine (late 2003 model). After 32 years of motorcycling and a number of different models, it's an "invigorating" return to the very essence of motorcycling: easy to handle, lively, comfortable, equally suited to a "cool" 400-mile ride or a little "Joe bar team" outing... (from 6500 rpm onwards, it pushes into the "fat" of the torque, and to revive the V twin, a little shot of 6th/5th...) Daily use (60Kms/day) and WE rides all year round. Modifications made: suspension set to softest setting and tire pressure reduced to 2/2.2 (more comfort and grip on rough roads), front mudguard, handguards and bubble set to lowest setting (nicer on "curvy" country roads) Superb night lighting (ah! the orange-lit dashboard!)) To be reviewed: average aesthetics (couldn't they have made two nice little Remus-style exhausts?...) but when you see the future BMs, it's still "reasonable". foot protection in heavy rain and "elephantine" exhaust (new standards) to be replaced by a more "breathable" homologated adaptable No original center stand (192 euros!!) The rest is just happiness...without breaking the bank. Long live the V twin Suz. Rating : 5/5
French trajectoir Model 2003
Yes, the 600 bandit you shouldn't have sold may have more torque from 10,000 rpm, but in the mid-range, where we spend most of our time, the dl650 pulls hard and relaxed, a real pleasure. I've never seen such a versatile bike, and I'm blown away every day. Rating : 5/5
French good Model 2003
It's a great bike. I have no complaints about the pleasure it provides (chassis/engine), its economy (between 4.5 liters per 100 on average) or its practicality (trunk, duo, meters, etc.). Aesthetics are debatable, but that's a matter of taste. 2 minor faults, however: - the varnish on the plastics is practically non-existent, which is a pity. - the front end tends to lose all grip in strong 3/4 headwinds (yes, the bike does "take off"). That said, it's honestly so great that I wouldn't change it in the current context. Rating : 5/5
French Diversion Model 2003
13OOOKM in six months, solo, duo, in the mountains, on the freeway, and always a great pleasure to drive this machine of absolute comfort, which allows a lot, consumes 5.5 liters/100 and constantly delights you. Are there any dissatisfied customers? That would be surprising or... overrated! Rating : 5/5
French vinsse Model 2003
It's an exceptional bike, in the sense that you feel good on it, whatever the road and however you ride it. The only complaints are the lack of a trail-type engine mount, and the footrests that touch the ground too easily when cornering. Rating : 5/5
French Coalman Model 2003
I've had a DL 650 since July... and frankly, I'm still amazed! All the good things people say about it are true (suppleness and liveliness of the engine at just over 4,000 rpm, irreproachable chassis)! As for the few criticisms that can be read here and there (I mean in newspaper articles, not in chat rooms where certain people with a penchant for writing will throw anything at you), it seems to me that they're there because they have to be! In other words: personally, I haven't found a flaw yet! Rating : 5/5

I've been riding a DL 650 for 3 months (4700km) and frankly I'm blown away by this bike. Handy, flexible, ergonomic and powerful when necessary (I'm not a speed freak, it's expensive!!). I have absolutely no regrets about my purchase. Rating : 5/5
French fg49 Model 2003
The Suz nameplate claims 49 kw (67 hp) at 8800 rpm and max torque of 6.5 mdaN (6.7 mkg) at 6400 rpm. And yes, the SV's twin has been tuned differently. Rating : 5/5
French dj34 Model 2003
i went from a 600 bandit to this machine and frankly, I wouldn't advise anyone to go from a legendary four-cylinder to this flabby twin with no torque. Frankly, it's not the deal of the century, and I'm selling mine because I don't want to hear any more about it and go back to any 4-cylinder Rating : 5/5
i'm waiting to get my license so I can ride this beautiful bike ... Rating : 5/5
