presentation of the DL 1000 V-STROM 2017

in the large trail segment, Suzuki has clearly understood that there's no point in trying to oust the benchmark 1200 GS. So the brand capitalized on its in-house policy, with a machine that does well everywhere, a less toxic price tag and an offbeat design. A little bit when it first came out in 2002; a lot more in its recent definition. A lot of road and a few trails later, Hamamatsu's maxi-trail benefits from a slight redesign. 2017 brings almost nothing but good, with what it takes to assert its position a little more.

until yesterday, the V-Strom wore a mug you had to live up to. Now, no maxi-trail is really sexy, except maybe the Italians. But a little more design flexibility would have been salutary.
Now it's done. Taking a little more inspiration from the DR 800 S "Big" and, in parallel, from the DR-Z rally bike of the 90s, the forkhead has a squarer, yet nicer face. Pyramidal shapes suit it much better than the insect-like visage. Still a cyclops, the 1000 V-Strom let the designers take care of its face, but not the rest. The bodywork remains unchanged, and the only differences (apart from color) are the more prominent black accents. The fork tubes, exhaust and rear frame are darker.

subtle changes. Because, like many other models, the V-Strom needed to evolve to meet Euro4 standards. While we're at it, we might as well take the opportunity to make a few adjustments. Firstly, to enhance the equipment. Handguards and an engine cover are now standard extras. Secondly, the bubble has been redesigned for greater efficiency, and is 49 mm larger than before. It can still be adjusted to 3 positions: standard, +7.5° and +15°. Finally, borrowing electronics from friends. The left-hand commodo has been fitted with a control knob, first used on the GSX-S 1000, for navigating the instrument panel and adjusting traction control. Suzuki has also added a 5-axis Bosch IMU inertial control unit to optimize ABS in corners. Suzuki calls this the Motion Track Brake System. What's more, braking is now coupled.
The big V-Strom also gains two goodies, which are now invading the whole range: Low RPM Assist, to facilitate take-off by increasing engine speed when the clutch is released; and Easy Start - you press one button, and the starter continues on its own until the engine starts.
And now for the traction control we were talking about earlier. Its functions have been renewed, with two intervention modes and the possibility of deactivating it.
So, without reaching the level of assistance found on a KTM or BMW, the Suzuki trail bike is becoming more and more discreetly equipped, without denying its simpler and more accessible side than the competition. One point that saddens us is the absence (as standard) of a luggage anchoring system. It's all very well for the 650 to offer it as an option, but when you consider that the little 250 is equipped with it as standard, you can't help but cringe at this kind of economy.

Suzuki DL 1000 V-STROM 2017

let's not forget the engine, one of the strengths of the 1000 V-Smurf. If we're at pains to point out that it originates from the TLS / TLR duo, it's because this twin is truly inspiring. Full-bodied, available and always hard-working, this 101 hp, 1037 cm3 delivers a great deal of satisfaction, and doesn't bend over backwards in the face of the segment's more powerful engines. Overhauled to meet Euro4 standards, it doesn't lose any power, but has to give up 2 Nm of torque. Virtually nothing, and it has over 10 mkg of muscle to distribute. Technically, only the exhaust system has changed, with two catalytic converters instead of one, and the fuel injection has been re-parameterized.

the front end is more supple, the equipment more caustic, and underneath the clothing, the technique has retained the confidence of its progenitors. The aluminum perimeter frame and swingarm, the fully adjustable 43 mm inverted fork, the adjustable shock absorber with its handy large knob, the 19" and 17" spoked wheels, the 310 mm brake discs with 4-piston radial calipers : they were all in the same class last year, and they're here again. In terms of dynamics, the V-Strom will offer the same smooth ride as the previous generation. And that's just as well. It's much more fun to ride than other, more serious and less lively models.

let's take stock and look back at its qualities. 1037 cm3 V-Twin adapted to Euro4 with a hair less torque but still the same gniak; renewal of the light, compact and playful chassis; tool-free adjustable and higher bubble; 2-mode traction control + OFF; latest-generation ABSangle-adaptive ABS; 12V socket on dashboard; hand guards and engine cowling as standard; Suzuki easy start system and Low RPM assist; radial calipers and inverted forks from old-generation GSX-R; revised design with more flexibility. We'd just have liked to see a little more effort on the luggage side, and a center stand as standard. The Suzuki 1000 V-Strom's pricing policy will soften the blow.

A combination of ease. Engine always present, even at low revs. Easy to handle. A little high, but with 1m70 and a low suzuki seat, it's manageable. Incomparable price and a versatile bike in every respect. 35,000km on the odometer. Rating : 4/5

vstrom 1000 vs Tracer
French Model 2017
my TRACER 900 GT having been stolen in RP, I acquired a 1000 Vstrom 2017 I drive with since 1 year, in fact I come to thank the thief I did not feel the tracer in driving position and too much electronics, I go back to basics with the Strom, and the driving position is more relaxed straighter, than on the Tracer thank you thief :) Rating : 5/5

French LOLO Model 2019
What a wonderful discovery this pretty toy is! We've just returned from a 1,500 km trip through the Gorges du Tarn, where curves, climbs, descents, paths, departmental roads, freeways, etc. followed one another, and frankly, it's a delight. It's simple, effective and so reasonable compared with some other bikes! To be used without moderation. Rating : 5/5

My 2017 Vstrom 1000 is a true joy. After other more powerful and more visible bikes, this Vstrom is a pure joy of comfort, sobriety, power and roadholding. I fitted a center stand, which was missing for my taste. Rating : 5/5
vstrom forever
French Model 2017
i bought it second hand the suzuki 1000 vstrom 2017 with 2000 kms; I currently have 24000 kms and nothing to complain it does its job in synthesizing-simplicity, economic, robust, for 4500 euros less than the others. I changed the gasket kit of the clutch receiver in 24000 kms for 26 euros Rating : 4/5
A very good motorcycle for long trips in duo and loaded, enough torque, economical in maintenance. Rating : 4/5
French beescotte Model 2019
no TFT screen (when I ride, I look at the landscape), no electronic suspension (I turn my dial.....to tell the truth :never), no engine mapping (where's the fun in a castrated engine?)....or I'm delighted with my purchase. It's my umpteenth bike (hopefully not the last), and it gives me what I need to ride, even hard (I know it's not right), in benevolent comfort. I can compare it with many brands, having had many, many bikes between my legs. Great value for money. No breakdowns to report. A 21" wheel with a slightly shorter wheelbase would be great for a new generation of this V-Strom
The 100 hp engine, a twin-cylinder that doesn't knock, is impressive!
And the reputation of this engine is unquestionable. Across the Atlantic, the V-Strom is renowned for its rock-solid reliability. I can confirm that. If you want to get away from it all without a care in the world, you need to go back to simple, no-frills motorcycles (which are nothing more than cafe terrace showcases) that are sturdy, and where a simple fall from a standstill doesn't immobilize the bike or cost anything
To finish, taking up the idea from the previous post, with the savings I've made with this bike, I can add another 2-wheeler to my garage, like a supermotard (selfish bike, but so much fun)
Bonne route....

1000 V STROM géniale
French Jyssé Model 2018
Hello everyone, a bit like everyone else, after 18 years on a GSXR 1000, I wanted a machine that was supple, comfortable, playful and reliable. This machine is a real magic carpet, with great torque, it turns on its own, brakes very well and holds the road. In short, it's a real pleasure to ride, and at a very reasonable cost, with the panniers and box topo. A must-see!

Second VSTROM, the first was a 650. This VSTROM 1000XT bought in March 2018 (to replace a troubled Guzzi Norge) already has 15750kms. No worries and always there when you call. TOP comfort apart from the saddle, which is a bit hard over time. What happiness!
In duo, the 100hp are enough to ride safely with suitcases, top case and tank bag.

I've just ordered the 3rd vstrom 1000 after having had many bikes ( 30 : morini grandpasso, guzzi stelvio,Ktm 990 aventure, Mv granturismo , 1200 GS......) and well I always come back to the VStrom 1000 ! I'm sick of being taken for a fool by manufacturers with their 20-kilo bikes, all for the sake of having a tft screen, settings you only use once, and bikes that become anvils.
VStrom 1000, I love you!

Definitely the best compromise in the trials family (actually a road bike)
Not too many gimmicks for everyday use, with a practical side.
According to users, it's really reliable.
At 71, I'm looking for one, and this will probably be my last bike.
I wish you all the best.

Coming from a R1200GS LC
I went back to basics after many overpowered bikes.
A 2017 DL 1000XT adventure pack
Long live simplicity,
No more worries about electronics
And the BMW after-sales service that doesn't give a damn.
The DL 1000 is a great machine, full of torque.
More than enough, given the speed limits.
I can confirm that it's a real pleasure to drive
super-stable, neutral steering, full engine.
A well-equipped bike with its Abs cornering system
Reduced risk of theft.
This bike will take you to the ends of the earth and will never go out of fashion, just like the GS
I recommend it

After having ridden very powerful machines k1300s z1000sx fz1 and many others the 50 years having sounded for a long time I thus decided to direct me on lighter and comfortable machines.
owning a v strom 1000 I was pleasantly surprised by its comfort, its engine power despite its 100 hp, its maneuverability, its average fuel consumption of 4 liters 7.
its faults are a hard seat, a particular aesthetic, and an original bubble that's too small, but I assure you it's being corrected.
i've never had so much fun on mountain roads, and I'd like to point out that much more powerful motorcycles, not to mention the bmw 1200gs, have a hard time keeping up on small mountain roads, not to mention big roads, where the bmw has the advantage of 30 more horsepower, but also 18,000 euros for the difference, so I'm buying a second bike.
To put it simply, the dl 1000 is really worth discovering, and I'm very, very satisfied.
