presentation of the XSR 700 Yard Built - Workhorse - 2018
Has this Yard Built gone too far? Because it seems that no limit to extravagance has had any effect on it.
Workhorse Speed Shop tuner Brice Hennebert pulled out all the stops to prepare the Yamaha XSR 700 entrusted to him. The aim was to win the "Factory Class" category of the Sultans of Sprint championship.
Yard Built preparations are generally designed to inspire Yam customers to customize their XSR 900, XSR 700, X V950 R or SCR 950 in striking fashion. For this project, Yamaha breaks the codes. This XSR isn't a museum bike, Brice has built a bike to dominate sprints. Low, long and faster than ever: Workhorse Speed Shop has taken the youngest XSR and removed all obstacles. Both engine and chassis, and every element in between, have been modified, adjusted, torn apart and rebuilt for even greater performance.
As a competition bike, there are obvious restrictions on what can be changed and the limits the tuner must respect when working on it. Brice has made the most of them. The aluminum bodywork was entirely hand-crafted in the blue and yellow colors of Yamaha Sonauto, a tribute to the FZR 750 ridden by Christian Sarron in the 1985 Bol d'Or. The frame has been lowered by 150 mm, and the footrests moved to the rear. The custom-built Workhorse swingarm is 100 mm longer, transforming this beast into a dragster.
This XSR 700 will have the smallest engine of all the Factory Class bikes. However, the machine has one major advantage: low weight and plenty of torque. The crankshaft has been balanced and lightened, while the oil circuit has been modified. With a Suter clutch and a modified fuel injection system, this is a new option for competition.
Among the high-end parts integrated are a carbon battery, a complete racing braking system, a clutch controller, a front and rear master cylinder and a NOS system with a Max Extreme Nitrous Controller. The paint job was carried out by Matthias Van Brussel. The saddle and jacket were designed by Jeroen Bouwmeester of Silver Machine.
Antoine Clémot, Motorcycle Product Manager at Yamaha Motor Europe:"What can I say about this bike? It's fast, low, bold, super fun... and we think it will win the race. Events like the Sultans of Sprint race break new ground in the Sport Heritage segment with a subtle blend of fun and performance. We love to see these amazing bikes come out of static displays to race at full throttle. It's all about expressing yourself and creating crazy designs, then getting together and sharing them. The Workhorse bike has an air of the Yamaha legends, echoing the styling of the endurance FZR750. Everything is tailor-made and it looks really unique. I can't wait to see what she's got up her sleeve, but I'm already proud to be part of the project.
This whole adventure has been created with a view to the Sultans of Sprint gatherings taking place this year. But what is it all about? Every year, hundreds of enthusiasts get together to compete on a straight line. These events are all about design, speed and, above all, fun! The Sultans of Sprint races will take place at The Reunion in Italy from May 19 to 20, then at the Biker's Classics in Belgium from June 29 to July 1, at Glemseck in Germany from August 29 to September 2 and finally at the Dandy Riders Festival in France from September 23 to 24. If you're lucky enough to attend an event, you'll discover eccentric creations from enthusiasts.
This Workhorse XSR 700 dragster will be piloted by a different guest for each event. The first round features Niccolò Canepa, Italy's first FIM Endurance World Champion driver. He won the 2016/2017 title in his second season with the Yamaha GMT94 team. If you'd like to join the adventure and find out the riders for each of the other rounds, be sure to follow the team at https://www.facebook.com/YamahaMotorFrance/.
