presentation of the TDR 240 1991

The TDR 240 is often referred to as the first mass-produced supermotard. In 1987, when the first model was presented, the term "supermotard" had not yet been coined. The term "supermotard" was barely used in the context of mixed dirt-and-tarmac competition, in which a host of cross-country bikes equipped with sports tires and upgraded brakes raged.

The TDR doesn't quite fit the bill. Rather, it's a concept bike designed for fun. A sports bike with a more or less trail-like stance and aesthetics.

Yamaha began developing this model in 1985. The engineers' aim was to launch a versatile "fun" motorcycle that broke away from the sporty production of the time, but remained in tune with the sporting spirit. To achieve this, the engineers sought to study and make the most of several existing Yamaha models. Four motorcycles were used for comparison and inspiration: The TZR 250, the RD 250 LC, the DTR 200 and the XT 225. The idea was to study each of the models on different terrains in order to retain their strengths. Yamaha even went so far as to test the TZR on dirt and the XT on a speed ring.

contrary to what you might think, the chassis is mainly road-inspired. Trail bikes didn't offer sufficient high-speed stability to be included in the specifications. The main inspiration was therefore the RD 250 LC, with its double-cradle tubular frame. However, the cross-section of the steel tubes has been increased and the geometry reworked to enhance handling. The frame is fitted with a special fork that is longer than a sports fork, but very similar in terms of travel. With 160 mm of travel, it's a far cry from the 270 mm of a DTR 200. Braking performance is excellent. With a 320 mm front disc clamped by a 4-piston caliper, the opposite would be surprising.

Engine-wise, we opted for the TZR engine (240cc for some countries, 250cc for others), which is far more powerful and sharper than the trail bikes we tested. Admittedly, below 7,000 rpm, the YPVS-valve-operated 2-stroke twin is a little sluggish, but beyond that point it's pure pleasure (except at the pump). The 44 horsepower are aided by the low dry weight (136 kg).

When it first came out, this new concept was immediately unanimously acclaimed. It's new and full of sensations: what more could you ask for? And although it's not really a supermotard, this Fun-Bike will be the initiator of this new range. Gilera took up the concept a few years after the release of the TDR on the basis of a real trail bike this time: the 600 NordWest.

super machin I've had it for about 5 years and finished the engine restoration last year frankly super fun to drive but very sharp however impossible to find a set of original tires Metzeler still has them but no dealer can provide them it's complicated especially as I would like to leave it original Rating : 4/5

French Nitro Model 1988
I owned one with which I did the cht de France des rallyes
I loved it, and if I find one I want to rebuild, I won't hesitate
A few corrections are in order, however
- in 250, my consumption was around 5l, not 8 or 9 at all. And I sent it
- the bike's chassis is very poor in real life, with narrow tires, a very average shock absorber, forks that aren't stiff enough, and a front axle that locks up under braking... in short, it's fun, but you had to take care of it, and it's not very efficient, but it's a very endearing bike.

French Espadon 7 Model 1988

French Cédrik Model 1990
I've been riding since I was 13, and now I'm 49. I've had everything from the XT600 to the TDM 850
Ducati 916 and monster S4rs Multistrada 1200 with perf kit, 750 gsxr, 1200 Bandit, 1000 Gts, Cbr 600 and 1100, speed triple 955 and 1050 etc...
At least fifty motorcycles, including a bevy of 2-stroke 125 Rdx, 125 and 200 Mtx, 240 Rh, 350 Rdlc, 500 Rg and this famous Tdr that I bought in 1996 and kept until 2006. I'm getting ready to buy another one in 2020 at the age of 49..... Why do you ask?
It's the craziest, most fun bike I've ever ridden, and it's a real handful for anyone with the potential to ride it hard on twisty roads !!!! Careful, it's an idiot's trap, sending you hard up to 190 km/h with insane braking provided it's shod with 17" rims and a full Jolly Moto ech line, the best but most expensive for a 2-stroke. In this case, it's well over 200 that it hooks up with the noise of a bee stinging its way back to the hive. It's impossible not to break down when you try it
This bike should be reimbursed by the social security system, it's so much fun to ride..... and I love stinking up the mob, it reminds me of when I was 14

French J4y8 Model 1988
My favorite motorcycle, that I wouldn't sell for anything in the world, really fun and playful, pure pleasure on every ride, low power but guaranteed sensations, in short, if you hesitate, try it and you'll adopt it, as long as you find one.... Rating : 5/5
