presentation of the R20 1938
The BMW R20 is the successor to the R2, with a number of significant changes. The frame, fork and engine were all new, marking a real break with the previous generation of single-cylinder bikes. The R20 cost 725 Reichsmarks when it came out in 1936, and owed part of its success to the fact that it could be driven without a license. This BMW was intended to be affordable: its price was half that of the 500 R5, and it was presented as an economical vehicle.
The bike had no rear suspension. It did, however, feature a telescopic fork. Around 5,000 examples were produced, before a change in legislation led to its replacement.
