presentation of the 1200 R 12 NineT 2024

Introducing the new NineT. One of the most successful models of the neo-retro movement continues its career and now extends its name. We're calling it the R 12 NineT!
A good way of confirming its membership of the Heritage range, where the R18 has pride of place. BMW has wisely made the link with the essence of the last century, when its motorcycles were baptized in this way.

but don't be fooled by the research, because an R12 has already existed in the range. It was a 1937 model, and the first motorcycle (along with the R17) to receive a telescopic fork with hydraulic damping as standard. Almost 9 decades later, the NineT is fitted with a fork from the S 1000 R, BM's mean roadster.

but let's get down to business. And how this bike is renewed. With even more retro styling, but with subtlety. Check out the cylinder head covers, more rounded and vintage-like. A shape reminiscent of the days when Boxers only had 2 valves per cylinder. A no-nonsense design. The presence of 2 lambda sensors, very close to the cylinders, is noticeable. The manufacturer has sought to further optimize pollutant emissions, in order to extend the life of this engine (air/oil has long since disappeared from all other families). A large bowl under the engine also testifies to the sacrifices needed to pass the standards. Redesigned air intake and exhaust systems. Validated for Euro5+, the Boxer still delivers 109 hp and 115 Nm of torque.

the backbone has been totally revised, this time based on a lighter, sleeker one-piece main frame, aided by a bolt-on rear loop. Alas, the R12 NineT has lost its famous aluminum plate under the seat. In its place, a plastic cover has much less charisma. The new fuel tank is 30 mm shorter, bringing the rider closer to the handlebars
But BMW has also worked subtly on other elements. Like the front mudguard supports, the double silencer with conical tailpipes, the radiator scoops, the rear light, the bottom of the meters... Note that the air intake manifold on the right-hand side has also disappeared. And that.... wow, the rims are now with spokes.

BMW R 12 NineTretro but not too retro. The R12 NineT has nothing of the old jalopy about it. It gains the Keyless system for keyless starting and still features the Paralever gimbaled swingarm, Brembo 4-piston radial brake calipers, ABS, three Driving Modes, traction control, all-LED lighting, USB socket, engine brake control... and plenty of optional extras and accessories. These include a digital speedometer, adaptive cornering light, hipster side bags, spoked wheels, etc.... Note that the NineT is now available in A2 version. Until now, only the Pure offered this option.

so, is the NineT a new bike or a radical evolution? Probably a bit of both. Brands are careful when they touch an icon.

The right price for an exclusive retro look in 2025?
French velocargo Model 2025
So, to see, I set about configuring this already very old bike on the BMW website, with almost all its new options except for the akrapovic pot, while keeping the round meters and the black color scheme-but with a beautiful optional brushed-aluminum tank & the addition of the fork head, offered only in black*, plus spoked rims... and 3 olive-colored soft saddlebags: aesthetically, the result is not bad at all to look at, but the price then stands at the modest sum of...28500 euros! compare this with the limited orange series, which is almost as well-equipped & yet less expensive, but in a unique color that is of no interest if you don't like homages to past models and this ridiculous color scheme.
* it should be noted that even for the astronomically excessive prices of the accessories offered on this model, it remains impossible to have the second color available in the catalog (the green one) with a fork head fairing that could possibly be matched... so we wonder if it wouldn't be better to go and have your bike repainted in any body shop? which makes me say that BMW doesn't care (just a little too much) about its supposedly wealthy customers.., unless it's just lazy design, which excuses nothing.
