presentation of the 1000 ds MULTISTRADA 2003
ducat' has severely blown a fuse... or there's genius in the air. With its very "personal" style, the Multistrada is shocking in both its design and its pretensions, light years away from the legend of the Italian brand's pure sports bikes.
it could be loosely compared to a V-strom or a 900 TDM, but the Multistrada is hard to classify. Previously, on a Ducati, the torture began with a sporty riding position, with the pronounced pressure on the half handlebars a curse... On the Multistrada, the scenery changes radically: you're riding a supermotard.
with the choice of an air-cooled, 2-valve per cylinder engine, the Bologna factory has come up with a charming new engine, the best road-going twin in its history. There's no need to rev it up. Between 4,000 and 6,500 rpm, it's efficient and lively. The geometry of the chassis has been particularly well thought out, and although the Ducat' easily allows you to indulge in wheeling fantasies, the precision and stability of the front axle are astonishing. The rest of the machine follows the sequences with ease and serenity. And when the brakes are applied, they're powerful and proportional (a little less so for the rear), without in any way disturbing the bike's balance.
turns follow one another without a moment's pause, with ease and a playfulness that a sportbike can't offer. If you were to keep up with a 999, you'd have less fun and, above all, you'd be beaten to a pulp after 20 km, whereas the Multistrada lets you go on and on. Taken out on the highway, it's less at ease, but can still cut a decent figure on the road, and then some... It's not an ST4 - in fact, it's far more comfortable.
and while we're on the subject of upsetting Ducatisti, once you're in town, you'll enjoy a NORMAL turning radius. If you want to have even more fun, you can take it out on the back roads, but there's no surprise here: it behaves like a big trail bike, not really at ease. The Multistrada catalog is enhanced by a list of options, to make the beast either more roadworthy or more racing-like.

But when you like it ..
I put on the comfort saddles, the high bubble, the center stand, the rear mudguard and the panniers
What feet on the handlebars. Pleasant in town, on a leisurely ride, playful as soon as you go to get it, and top braking when you've gone too far to get it ;o))
Truly a great bike. Rating : 5/5 Respond to Phil
