the Honda 750 NR is no longer a motorcycle... it's a technical achievement! A concentrate of know-how, Honda's ultimate motorcycle. The Japanese manufacturer designed it for the purpose of riding, but its real place would be in a glass pyramid capable of defying time. Let's ignore certain materialistic considerations, such as the totally insane price (375,000 bales in 1992), the frightening rate of production (3 units per day) or the number of models built (around 800 are said to have left the factory). 34 models arrived in France. The manufacturer had the good sense to offer each (wealthy) buyer a solid silver Honda key-ring. The NR combines the very best of research - fully adjustable upside-down forks, a single rear arm, a dashboard with every conceivable control dial and digital tachometer, magnesium rims and stainless steel exhausts under the seat. The bubble, to protect the Honda NR 750 1993 rider from ultraviolet rays, receives a titanium surface treatment similar to that on American F 15s. The all-carbon-fibre fairing is not just ultra-light; it is also aerodynamically advanced, cancelling out the harmful effects of airflow and allowing the NR to glide through the air like a shark through water. But the most talked-about aspect of the NR is its extraordinary oval-piston engine. This is no joke! Each cylinder contains an oval piston that transmits its force to 2 forged titanium connecting rods. The combustion chamber is fed by no less than 8 valves and 2 spark plugs.

Add it all up and you've got a V4 with 8 spark plugs and 32 valves. A cascade of sprockets and PGM-FI fuel injection complete this monument, which will remain on a pedestal forever, with no descendants. At the time, Moto-Journal tester Eric Maurice had the honor of trying it out and appreciating its fantastic suppleness. His only disappointment was: "A very unspectacular engine and a more VFR-style touring-sport orientation, than pure RC 30-style sportiness". In addition to its high-tech appeal (200 patents filed), the NR set 4 world speed records (obtained with a prepared version, lightened to 180 kg and optimized to 155 hp):

an ultimate toy, maybe one day if I win the lottery. In the meantime, I make do with my means and ride a vfr 750 rc36, it's somehow a piece of this bike with the pinion distri for example but without the oval pistons. In my opinion, the Honda NR 750 is still the most incredible motorcycle ever built. The NR is immediately recognizable. I've never seen it with my own eyes, but I think I've read almost everything about it. The best summary I found was on motoplanéte. Even today, this motorcycle is certainly the most innovative of the last thirty or forty years, and is now a collector's item for wealthy enthusiasts. Perhaps even the motorcycle of the twentieth century.

I've just come across this NR post, and having studied mechanics when the oval piston first came out, I did some research and it wasn't HONDA that was the first. An English engineer came out with one, but ovalized in the other direction with a single connecting rod, but that was a lot longer ago ..... it's like the multi-valve, BUGATTI used it long before NIPPON on their vehicles .... well, it pisses me off to see Japanese engineers taking all the laurels for European inventions that don't date back to yesterday but were simply found stupid by our handsome engineers from Saint Cyr, isn't that what they say? 07/03/2008 21:12 Rating : 5/5 Respond to mick711

It's beautiful and it seems strange to me; it's a good idea to innovate and not do what everyone else is doing, but ... it seems strange to me and I don't think it's really the idea of the century, these oval pistons, but it's a good idea !!! i'd say it's the 2 connecting rods that have to balance the force of the piston as it rises and falls to center the forces so there's less friction... After so many valves, it doesn't seem necessary to me... Funny bike, nice work !!! this machine is a UFO among motorcycles! i had the opportunity to see it exhibited at Lebret, Honda dealer in rouen, ba it is impressive!!! both by the look and by the price at which he posted it for a while!!! they didn't stop it because it was too expensive, but because the FIM banned the use of oval pistons in competition (at the request of other manufacturers who were frightened when they saw the machine's potential). There was even a model in the gp 500 at the time, where it was the only 4-stroke...the road machine had engine leakage problems because of the oval pistons (a problem that would have been solved if honda had persisted in developing the machine). This machine has the same engine output as a v8... if some of you want to listen to it ( it sounds like a big v8 mustang ), contact me by mail.
