Motorcycle specifications Indian 1890 Chief Vintage Sturgis, SD Edition 2026 The Soul of Indian
presentation of the 1890 Chief Vintage Sturgis, SD Edition 2026
With its Chief Vintage Sturgis SD Edition, Indian pays a twofold tribute: celebrating its 125th anniversary and the origins of the largest motorcycle rally in the U.S. A sharing—or even a communion—with the spirit of the American motorcycle, expressed in the most symbolic way the brand could possibly convey it. Classic bikes, cruisers, and the symbols of the clan.
Celebrations Galore
Indian is going all out with its special editions this year. Between the Signatures Series and the 125th Anniversary Edition, there are nearly a dozen models being released. Some brands seem hooked on this kind of over-the-top marketing, such as Ducati with its twenty or so limited editions this year. The Chief Vintage stands out with a design that highlights its history with South Dakota—hence the initials “SD” in the bike’s name.
So, what are the differences, exactly?!
The Sturgis, SD Edition features a two-tone Indian Motorcycle Red and Cream color scheme, an iconic combination for the brand that first appeared in the 1930s. It’s gorgeous, but not groundbreaking. This color scheme has already been used on the Scout, Roadmaster, and Chieftain, as well as on the previous generation of the Chief Vintage.
However, this is the first time the Headdress logo has appeared in multiple colors on the fuel tank. A “56” number plate serves as a tribute to the achievements of the first riders at Sturgis.
Now for the less pleasant news. First, the price: it’s $4,000 more than the standard Chief Vintage —for a two-tone paint job and a big sticker, that’s a hefty markup. Second, you must already own an Indian to be eligible to order this Sturgis Edition. Finally, availability: only two units will arrive in France, out of the 125 that will be distributed worldwide.
It’s actually a very small group, since Indian has selected only about fifteen regions for this Chief. Only Australia, Benelux, Central Europe, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Nordic countries, the Middle East & Africa, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom will receive an allocation of this model.

A motorcycle that embodies everything Indian
The Chief Vintage is, above all, THE iconic retro-style cruiser, with a design that harks back to the past, spoked wheels, massive fenders, a suspended solo seat, and that engine proudly on display. It’s the kind of machine connoisseurs love, with plenty of displacement (1,890 cm³), air cooling, a distinctive growl, massive torque (156 Nm) available very early on, and a thrilling look.
But an Indian, as iconic as it may be, also features cutting-edge technology. The rider will quickly notice this with the 4-inch color TFT display featuring navigation and Bluetooth. Then they’ll discover keyless ignition, three riding modes, full LED lighting, cruise control, 12V and USB ports, automatic deactivation of the rear cylinder, and ABS.
A Chief Vintage also weighs over 300 kilos, brought to a stop by a single brake disc per wheel. Cruising is a must, in a timeless class that’s brimming with memories—especially those celebrated by the Sturgis edition, with its first gatherings in the Black Hills….. The original event drew 9 riders and 200 spectators in 1983—today, more than 500,000 motorcycles make their way to this small town of 7,000 residents every year. On Indian, Harley-Davidson, Victory, and Boss Hoss bikes, and with a wide variety of custom builds.
