presentation of the ST 1600 1990
Kahena, the historic Brazilian cycle brand, launched a small motorcycle range in the 90s. Like the motorcycles of the now-defunct Amazonas brand, the distinctive feature of this range is that it is based on the mechanical characteristics of the Volkswagen Beetle.
Kahena offers three technically very similar models based on a 1600 cc flat-four: the 1600 SS, the 1600 ST (shown here) and the Custom 1600.
The ST model is the tourer of the range. It develops a respectable 90 hp and reaches a top speed of around 190 km/h. Its Brazilian origin enables it to run on either unleaded 95 gasoline or ethanol.
The manufacturer emphasizes its very low center of gravity for surprising maneuverability given its size, and its reverse gear for maneuvering at very low speeds.
While roadholding and ride quality are nothing like those of a modern tourer, the engine is no slouch when it comes to feel, and the chassis shines in cruising mode, rather like a Harley Road Glide.
Brazilian tuning enthusiasts can have a field day transforming their bikes. A wide range of performance parts designed for the VW flat four are adaptable. For example, the engine can be boosted to almost 2.4 liters in displacement, for a power output of over 150 hp, at the risk of completely disassembling the chassis.
The ST is also an excellent base for attaching a sidecar. Unfortunately, it will not be imported into France, except by a few individual motorcyclists who are also Beetle enthusiasts.
