Essentials
The KX85 isn’t just a stepping stone between the 50cc and the 125cc. It’s also a more accessible machine—both in size and power—for riders of smaller stature. For 2026, Kawasaki engineers have taken a completely new approach to this popular motocross machine, incorporating a wide range of new components and technical upgrades. While the proven and reliable two-stroke engines remain, modifications to the chassis, suspension, and front end of the KX85 open up new performance possibilities.
The major new feature is the adoption of a new fork with a larger diameter. This low-friction assembly, featuring a Kashima coating, now features 43 mm diameter tubes, rebound adjustment, and increased stiffness. In addition to the existing compression adjustment, the addition of adjustable rebound allows for even more precise suspension tuning.
Up front, the upgrades continue with a new 240-mm-diameter brake disc, paired with the same caliper and master cylinder as those used on the KX250, delivering superior braking power, increased durability, and better control. At the rear, a larger 220-mm-diameter disc and reduced pedal play contribute to more precise braking. The new Dunlop Geomax MX34 tires improve traction, braking grip, and cornering grip, while offering better front-end feel.
At the rear, a new fully adjustable shock absorber has been adopted, with the shaft diameter increased from 12.5 mm to 14 mm, and the cylinder length extended from 380 mm to 390 mm, resulting in firmer damping. A redesigned link provides 305 mm of travel, a figure comparable to that of the larger-displacement KX models.
The perimeter frame, already highly regarded, has also been improved, with the steering column length increased by 25 mm. This increased front-end stiffness provides greater overall stability, while components such as the handlebars, steering column, and rear sprocket are now made of aluminum, reducing weight compared to previous versions.
In terms of ergonomics, the rider benefits from extensive adjustments thanks to a new upper triple clamp offering two handlebar mounting positions and reversible triple clamps, allowing for four possible positions: 10 mm forward, standard, 10 mm rearward, and 20 mm rearward. Added to this are two possible heights thanks to spacers (standard and +5 mm), offering a wide range of ERGO-FIT positions for a more personalized riding stance.
With a new aggressive, angular front fender, a new front number plate, redesigned radiator vents, and ODI Lock-On grips mounted on a new Renthal Fatbar handlebar, the rider also benefits from new, flatter footpegs, widened to 48 mm (previously 40 mm). These feature a greater number of teeth for better grip. The black rims and green anodized suspension adjustments reinforce the “factory racer” look, perfectly aligning these junior models with their adult counterparts.
