There are sometimes models released as a result of passing trends that, for reasons unknown, become an indispensable staple in the Japanese market. Although relatively unknown in France (where it actually enjoyed a fairly successful run), the Zephyr 1100 is one such machine.
Introduced in the early 1990s, this large, classic roadster—which doesn’t skimp on chrome—has enjoyed an incredible 15-year run on the Japanese market without undergoing any major changes.

Following the success of the 750 Zephyr in 1991, the Zephyr 1100 arrived in 1992 (along with a 550cc “little sister”) in a market that was already very crowded but also very different from today’s market. The flagship models were not yet called Monstro, Bandit, or Fazer, but rather V-max, Trident, Big One, K100, or GSX-1100G. The sporty roadster had not yet taken over the market, and the large roadster segment offered utility, classic, touring, or slightly sporty models.

Kawasaki chose to tap into nostalgia and capitalized on the neo-retro trend by releasing a model reminiscent of the 900 Z1. The design is very classy, and the ubiquitous chrome gives it a truly distinctive look.

In terms of handling, the bike feels immediately accessible. The engine doesn’t have the punch of a GSX-G or a V-Max, but it makes up for it with great flexibility and a lively, spirited character when revved high. It even becomes formidable in sporty riding thanks to excellent handling and a slightly forward-leaning riding position that invites aggression far more than the Suzuki GSX-G’s “coach” position or the Yamaha V-Max’s “dragster” stance.

Braking is perfect, though it highlights the average quality of the suspension. The fork can’t handle the power of the dual discs clamped by 4-piston calipers and bottoms out during hard braking. At high speeds, the rear end tends to wobble a bit. And even though the Zephyr stays on course and never feels dangerous, it encourages the novice to exercise restraint.

In the city, it makes for a perfect ride thanks to its maneuverability (despite weighing over 260 kg fully fueled) and can handle long-distance travel with the addition of a good windscreen. The Zephyr is a very well-rounded and appealing model for daily use. However, it is not without its flaws. The 4-cylinder engine is a bit more thirsty than the competition (on average half a liter more than a V-Max or a GSX-G), and the chassis could have benefited from slightly better suspension.

In France, this model lost some ground when the Ducati Monstro and its much sportier counterparts arrived. But its success in Japan continues to this day, proof that this machine was born to succeed.
