presentation of the 250 EXC-F 2016
A powerful engine combined with a lively, agile chassis are the ingredients behind another world title in the hands of Christophe Nambotin. The compact, powerful engine combines perfectly with the proven chassis, giving this lively little 4-stroke the edge over the competition.
engine
there's no doubt about it, the 250 EXC-F will be at the top of the highly competitive enduro class, as proven by its previous World Championship titles. The engine construction shares many components with the brilliant 350 EXC-F, and boasts phenomenal torque and remarkable power. The 250 EXC-F leads its class in terms of performance, thanks to its dynamic yet agile power and advanced fuel injection system.
cylinder head
the centerpiece of the DOHC engine is the cylinder head, with twin overhead camshafts and DLC-coated rocker arms. Huge flow-optimized intakes, combined with large intake and exhaust valves, guarantee considerable flow, contributing to the machine's performance. The camshafts have been designed to deliver maximum power and torque, while retaining enduro-specific power.
cylinder and piston
the short stroke and large bore allow the use of large valves. The lightweight forged bridged box piston offers optimum performance and dynamic power delivery, while the low-mounted oscillating weights reduce vibration.
valve train
the crankshaft drives a multi-function intermediate shaft in a lateral position, which in turn drives the coolant pump and the two camshafts via the timing chain. It also acts as a balancer shaft. A hydraulic chain tensioner ensures chain tensioning for ultra-precise timing.
starter
to start the 250 EXC's engine, the machine is equipped with a kick starter as well as an electric starter. Tucked away behind the cylinder, the electric starter is connected to the starter freewheel at the ignition rotor via the starter drive in the ignition cover.
crankshaft
the 250 EXC-F's crankshaft is equipped with a flywheel designed for optimum drive. The crankshaft features a smooth connecting-rod bearing. Two bearing shells are press-fitted directly onto the crankpin. The bearing is supplied with oil from the engine's pressure lubrication system. This design extends engine life and crankshaft service intervals, saving the customer time, effort and money.
crankcase
the wall thickness of the die-cast crankcase has been considerably reduced compared to the gravity casting process. The aluminum alloy used has a high tensile strength and is highly resistant to stone impact and other possible shocks.
balancing shaft
to compensate for inertia forces, the motor is fitted with a balancing shaft that also drives the water pump.
dDS clutch
the DDS (damped diaphragm steel) one-piece clutch housing is machined from a single piece of high-strength steel, together with the primary transmission pinion. This process guarantees unrivalled reliability, and contributes to the engine's compactness thanks to its rivet-free design and ultra-thin steel linings. The elastic diaphragm allows the use of an additional rubber damping system inside the clutch hub, ensuring transmission reliability and excellent driveability. Last but not least, the Brembo hydraulic clutch mechanism associated with this elastic membrane plays an essential role in clutch progressiveness and operation.
gearbox
developed specifically for the 250 EXC-F, the Enduro gearbox with its 6-speed gearbox features relatively short ratios from 1st to 5th, as well as an overdrive 6th gear. The gearbox features smooth, precise shifting.
engine Management System
the Engine Management System supplied by Keihin, combined with electronic fuel injection and a 42 mm throttle body, ensures immediate response and optimum engine performance. The 196 W oil-cooled AC alternator is sufficient to power fuel injection, lighting and all other electrical consumers. Combined with the engine map selection control offered as an option in the Power Parts range, the EMS allows the driver to select different engine characteristics. What's more, the optional User Tuning Tool allows engine data to be read using a laptop computer, and ignition and injector mappings to be modified with just a few clicks.
alternator
the engine of the 350 EXC-F is equipped with a 196 W AC alternator with integrated starter freewheel. This alternator is sufficient to power fuel injection, lighting and all other electrical consumers. Compared with the 350 SX-F, the oil-cooled rotor has a larger diameter, a higher flywheel mass and requires a larger ignition cover.
air box
at the same time, the ingenious design of the airbox optimally protects the air filter from any damage.on of the air filter against dust penetration and ensures maximum airflow for high performance. The airbox covers are manufactured using the bi-component process with new molded graphics. The filter can be replaced quickly, without tools. In addition, two additional lugs on the cover allow it to be secured with screws if required.
wheels
giant's black 7050 T6 aluminum rims with black spokes match the CNC-machined hubs and lightweight aluminum spoke nipples, guaranteeing optimum stability for minimum weight. Specially developed for KTM, Maxxis enduro tires ensure optimum traction and exceptional performance.
brakes
kTM off-road models have always been equipped with high-tech Brembo brakes and Wave discs, the ultimate braking solution. True benchmarks in the enduro category, they remain unchanged on 2016 models.
front wheel axle
the front wheel axle has been reduced from 26 mm to 22 mm to reduce weight and improve front-end feel. Adjusted caster and greater ground clearance provide improved stability.
fork guards
the fork protectors have been adapted to the fork legs and are also lighter. The open design offers the same level of protection while allowing easy access to the fork legs for cleaning and maintenance.
frame
the modern frame design of the 250 EXC-F, with tubular sections in lightweight, high-strength chrome-molybdenum steel, offers a high level of protection.ne steel, offers maximum longitudinal rigidity combined with optimum torsional rigidity. It ensures excellent handling and steering precision, as well as excellent riding stability. So the new frame doesn't just come in a new color; it also sets the benchmark in terms of weight and stability. The frame is the same orange color as that of the KTM factory team, making it even more attractive. Thanks to the combination of frame design and the PDS rear damping system, shocks to the rear wheel are optimally absorbed and dissipated. The 2016 model is also equipped with a sturdy frame guard.
swingarm
the design of the cast-aluminum swingarm is the result of careful calculations and computer simulation. Its design and wall thickness guarantee optimum rigidity while reducing weight, as well as precisely defined flexibility.
cooling
kTM's tried-and-tested integrated cooling system circulates coolant from the cylinder head via the frame triangle to the aluminum radiators supplied by WP. The 450 EXC large-displacement model is fitted with a radiator fan as standard.
suspension / damping
the KTM 250 EXC-F gets a new fork with new bellows, reduced caster and new suspension settings optimally matched to weight and engine. It also features new fork protectors. WP suspension components have been designed specifically for enduro riding. They guarantee optimum traction and comfort. at the rear, a PDS shock absorber from WP Suspension is connected directly to the upper part of the swingarm. KTM machines come with a wide range of rebound and compression adjustment options for high and low speeds as standard.
handlebars
all EXC models are equipped with ultra-strong, profiled Neken handlebars made of high-tensile aluminum alloy. Bridges of proven design standards allow the handlebars to be fixed in four different positions. Leonelli's new lighting control is adapted to the demands of enduro riding. Standard perforated handguards offer optimum protection for the rider's hands.
fork tees
top-of-the-range CNC-machined fork crowns are designed specifically for enduro riding, ensuring precise handling by influencing fork flex. Feedback to the front wheel is exceptional, even on the roughest terrain, increasing safety and passing speeds.
speedometer
mAE's speedometer integrates all indicators and warning lights in a single unit, with the exception of the turn signals. This gives the instrument panel a clean, minimalist look, with excellent visibility of all available information.
fairing
the fairing design is ergonomic and functional, so that the machine is in perfect harmony with its rider, down to the smallest detail.
fuel tank
all fuel tanks are made of lightweight polyethylene. These large-capacity tanks are designed specifically for enduro riding, and all feature a quarter-turn bayonet-type filler cap opening mechanism for fast, easy opening.
