presentation of the 890 Adventure R 2022
there was a time when KTM's R models produced more watts than the standard model from which they were derived. For example, with the Duke 890 R; or, for a time, with the Adventure 890 R.
well, almost. This privilege only lasted a few weeks - the time it took Katoche to present the 890 Adventure "pas-R". Both experienced a special moment. We insist on the engine, on his body-building course, on his evening with the Duke , from which he emerged with 105 horsepower.
that's 10 more than the 790, and what can we say about the torque, which jumps by 1.2 mkg. As with the roadster, the increase to 889 cm3 is achieved by increasing the stroke (from 65.7 mm to 68.8 mm) and bore (from 88 mm to 90.7 mm). Optimizations such as 1 mm larger valves, a new balance shaft, a higher compression ratio, redesigned flow transfers, forged pistons and a 20% heavier crankshaft are all part of the package. A magic potion very similar to that of the 790 -> 890 Duke duo.
But that doesn't mean that this block is a carbon copy of the roadster's. Less powerful, more torquey, it's also more powerful. Less powerful, more torquey, it delivers its 105 horsepower and 10.2 mkg much sooner.
Since the 790 Adventure, power peaks are at the same rpm, but the available force is a notch higher. Katoche has taken the opportunity to reinforce the anti-dribble clutch.
since its inception, the Adventure R has always had a craving for more adventure than its sibling. This character trait is as vivid as ever with the 890, and the greater suspension travel (240 mm instead of 200) means that you can tackle more and/or more difficult terrain with greater serenity. This new chapter includes a 48 mm XPLOR fork with new settings, forged aluminum fork crowns (previously steel), a steering damper and a rodless rear shock absorber. All suspension lines are by WP and adjustable from all sides.

The main part of the chassis is the same, but with a revised swingarm that is stiffer and more stable. The orange steel trellis frame is matched by 21" and 18" spoked wheels shod with Karoo3 tires - a wheel profile ready for direct off-road use - and 320 mm brake discs lined with 4-piston radial calipers. Braking benefits from new hoses, while the rear caliper gains new pistons to bite the 260 mm disc.
the 20-liter fuel tank is as singular as ever , with its cheeks reaching right down to the ground, for a range of over 400 km. Thirst will take just as long to arrive. This gives you time to gauge your posture on the handlebars, and modify your riding position if necessary. Once stationary, you can take out the tools and adjust it to 6 positions. During this break, you can also remove the rubber inserts from the footrests, to take advantage of their claws and better wedge your boots for off-road excursions.

Above that, the Adventure 890 R follows the KTM doctrine of modernism, with a healthy dollop of electronics. It starts with the main headlight and LED taillight. It continues with the 5-inch TFT color display. Then it's on to the driving experience, with (improved) traction control, engine brake control, several Riding Modes, and curve-active ABS, sprinkled with an off-road function. The only dead end is the Up&Down shifter, relegated to an optional extra.
the 890 Adventure R has 3 Riding Modes. Plus a special Rally mode. The latter gives the throttle a maximum punch, a 9-step traction control setting, and is optimized for adaptation to a wide range of surfaces. It's a pity that this mode is optional, whereas it was standard on the 790 Adventure R.
The standard modes are the usual "Street", the safe "Rain" and the considerate "Offroad". Choose according to mood or terrain... Or both ;-)
are you ready to go? The Adventure is even more so today. Now more powerful, it's a model to be reckoned with on rocky outings. In terms of power, it's almost on a par with the 1100 Africa Twin, even in terms of price. The character is quite different, however.
So paunchy, the performance gap with the 790 Adventure is more than noticeable. Without realizing it, it has almost become the descendant of the 1050 of yesteryear.
