presentation of the 1100 CALIFORNIA EV 2002

affectionately nicknamed "Calif", the California is an essential piece of Moto-Guzzi history. The equivalent of theElectra Glide with that typically Italian charm. Designed to cruise to the thumping beat of its 2 huge bowls, the bike makes itself desirable by its own rules. First, there's the engine: a V2 bursting at the seams, alive and kicking. The effort of its innards betrays its age, but its behavior leaves no one unmoved. Riding is an art, and the big piston strokes sprinkle it with joviality. Comfort is present and the bike brakes well. The finish is good, although it's worth keeping an eye on certain components. The only major complaint is the gearbox, which is hopelessly slow. The Calif can go fast, but it doesn't like to. Its trick is to take you to the ends of the earth at a leisurely pace that will thrill you as much as it does. If you're curious, don't bother - the California, like many Guzzi models, is aimed at connoisseurs and enthusiasts. Its bewitching engine will quickly turn you into one of them.

I still miss my 2010 Aquila Nera calif, which I reluctantly had to sell: very uncluttered, a bit like the Jackal 2000 but in matte black throughout, including the engine block, it was the perfect example of what Moto Guzzi knew how to do before abandoning most of its range. Well done to Guzziman for his purchase: I'm back on the hunt, determined to find a one-year old used Calif... Rating : 4/5

If you have a plan for a cheap gearbox, please let me know!
Thanks in advance.

A real Moto Guzzi, with all the flaws that make it so charming. 15 years of life together and it's still nothing but happiness. So, gentlemen of Piaggio, when are we going to get our hands on this 850 T3 California? Rating : 4/5

Still very happy with my very nice 2002 Guzzi stone/jackal bought recently from a serious private individual at 63700 km, 3300 euros. Two-tone color tank. A lively engine on secondary roads, with a nice, round, straightforward sound, always driving by ear at the right rpm to respect the transmission. Once you've got the hang of it, the gearbox is reassuring. It's a good replacement for my old Harley Dyna, and finally, the steels are of better quality and don't rust. Just goes to show, there's plenty to eat and drink at Harley! I've had 1100R and 1200RT Behemoths and a Dyna, but this good old young Guzzi is my favorite, simpler, easier, more authentic and certainly very robust and without the electrical problems of yesteryear. In the end, I bought a lovely, well-maintained 2002 calif, the refined Jackal model. A single speedometer, a beautiful black and yellow ochre tank. I trust the seller. I'm off on Wednesday to pick it up 600 km away with a big trailer and straps. I know she's waiting for me... with the bank check, but for the amount! I forgot, I've got 65 well-adjusted broomsticks and the beauty is only 16, a miracle! I'm going to stay young, because without a motorcycle you're an old fart. Rating : 5/5

hello everyone, I'm new to the site, I've got 58 springs and counting; I'm in the Haute Garonne; I've got several machines, but my favorite (and that's what my partner thinks) is my Calif 1100: cruising visits, a thousand cows, transpy, I always enjoy it as soon as I press the starter. I'm going to rebuild the fork, which has hardened, but that's my fault.
Bonne route à tous. Une belle italienne avec une poitrine haute la Guguzze (alors qu'une allemande Bèmwé à les seins qui tombent).

hello Philippe
no comments but rather need an opinion. I've just bought the beauty, but it's my first motorcycle, so I'm wondering if I've made the right choice to get started. The beast is pretty impressive, but how do you tame it? Thanks for your answer
Rating : 5/5
French Philippe
Hi there, no need to worry, the beast is impressive but not mean. I often move it around my house in a thick layer of gravel, which isn't the most fun, but I manage despite my age (60) and multiple Achilles tendon operations. For driving, a real bike when you're on the move. In town, don't put your foot down, it heats up a lot and in summer it's a bit tricky. On the road, it's top-notch because it's comfortable and can go very fast, believe me. On the other hand, the gearboxes aren't Japanese, so you have to shift them smoothly if you don't want them to clatter loudly or miss the shift. Whether it's a 1975 California or a current one, the gearbox hasn't changed. As for maintenance, for what it costs, get it done. You'll get a follow-up for a possible sale, and that counts for something. Save your old socks and Te shirt for briquering, it's the only thing to do. Mine's 17 years old but in mint condition. There's no shame in taking a rag. I repeat, it's not a "j\'ap\", it can roll very fast but it's not made for that. On the other hand, it runs for a very long time because it's not a "jap", it's just fun, and it has great braking if you've got brembo, which I don't think is the case with machines before 1996. Good riding and remember that everything can be tamed, so anticipate your only danger, which is the idiots who come home from work Rating : 5/5

thank you for your reassuring comment, which reinforces my choice. the aim is to take madame for a walk around the burgundy region where we live. i'll take delivery of the machine and get back to you with my first impressions. the rags are ready.

as promised some news
first 70 km outing to get the hang of it
confirming the gravel in front of the house is tense but all's well. No problem with the gearbox, which I find much smoother than the yam xj6 from the auto school (and yes, for the moment it's my only reference). My big difficulty is maneuvering at slow speed, despite the comfort saddle, I can't get both feet flat (1.70m) and have to shift on the saddle to put at least one foot down. So that's a bit of extra stress. I'm wondering if I've got the right tire size, because I've read that depending on the size, the handling and height of the machine can be quite different
i'm equipped with pirelli demon sport 110/90 x 18 front and 140/80 x17 rear, these are the dimensions recommended by the manufacturer but if I could gain in both height and handling....
bonne route

Hi there, for the manoeuvres the feet a max on the ground if it is possible otherwise there is no shame to make go down madam it is better that that will make smile that a bowl that will make laugh all the alley or in the worst to wound madam who will never put the bottom on the bike. For tires, no matter what the brand, the height won't change. All you have to do is have the saddle re-cut by a saddler, but for the record, it's no more than 4 centimeters and about 250â'¬ aie aie aie . By now you should have all this in hand. But I don't want to be a show-off. But from what I'm reading, I think you're serious. To Philippe Rating : 5/5
French tarvuac
hello Philippe
continuation of the peregrinations of a motorcycle beginner with a calif as his first mount
Soon the first thousand km, the grip is getting better and I've had to mourn the loss of a good footing, even without the saddle it's not wonderful, when you're in a bad way you're in a bad way. I'm thinking about a good pair of heel lifts and I'm avoiding approaching cars in town.
As for braking, for those who would like to get started with this bike, apart from the high rear brake pedal (like many customs) which takes a bit of getting used to, it proves to be very safe with the front-rear split. The front brake is very, very supple and allows you to "lick the disc" at low speed without locking up.
In terms of roadholding, despite my lack of experience, I'm pleased with the Dunlops, and the bike handles like a bike, with one corner following another without a hitch. My wife is delighted with the passenger comfort.
On the mechanical side, I'm experiencing a slight acceleration at the cardan shaft in third gear when re-accelerating after downshifting, if that inspires anyone. Otherwise, at 51,000km, there's nothing to report.
bonne route à tous

my 2000 Jackal stopped dead in 2004 at 56548km...against a Laguna Nevada! both wrecks!!! ;-))
it was with drool on my lips that I looked for the same frame all over France, except for one color: gray
i found it in Paris, it had 15,000km (Pfff, even a bit rusty!!!), now it's at 40,000 and I really hope that this time, it's the engine that's going to let me down...from wear and tear and ecstasy
one note spoke of 300,000km possible, with moving parts (pistons, balls, rings, bushes...) changed around 150,000km...we'll see!!!
only complaint: despite a Stone saddle (1 piece) and Bitubo shoes, my passenger still can't stand long rides, snif...

Hello, I have 36.000 km with my california 1100 special, bought in 2001, only problem, oil leak on the clutch, seals of the control mounted upside down and discovery of the plates badly riveted, I took advantage of it to make a removable crossbar behind the box, so no need to sotir the engine, that made at a friend having a rectif workshop, since 10.000 km since the repair and no problem. I'll have to think about adjusting the culbus, but that said, I'm not in a hurry. I plan to drain the fork and put LHM like I did on my 1000 goldwin. Bonne route à tous , je réside dans les Landes à DAX. Rating : 5/5

the 2000 kms I rode on this bike were a real pleasure (ev 2002 model). big torque, it kicks in on start-up, then it's very stable and safe at cruising speed. two minor gripes: the seat's a bit low (in relation to my 1.80 m frame), then full braking with the foot... be careful, powerful braking, you have to like it and go for the pedal high up
better get a good windscreen up front too..
a bit heavy in town to get through traffic, but a real joy on the road and highway...bon route en california!
