presentation of the 850 Le Mans III 1981
The second evolution of the Le Mans arrived on the French market in 1981 (presentation in 1980). This time, Moto-Guzzi didn't just go to the tailor, but proposed a number of technical modifications.
while the frame remains more or less the same (apart from an extended swingarm for greater stability), the engine has undergone a complete overhaul. It retains the same displacement, but gains new cylinders and new cylinder heads. The cylinders receive a nikasil (or Nigusil, as you may have read on the net) treatment and a reduction in machining tolerances, which augurs better reliability and operation. This new top end is easily identified by its more angular shape. Whereas the cylinders and cylinder heads of previous versions were round (or egg-shaped), the Le Mans 3 features cylinders with squarer cooling fins.

the Le Mans 3 also gains a new air-assisted fork, more modern Paioli shock absorbers and, above all, a new look. And that's what really catches the eye. Gone is the 1978 fairing, with its more GT than Sport profile. The 3rd model of the name abandons not only the fairing flanks, but also the wrap-around fork head (with integrated indicators) in favor of a more angular, pointed muzzle, much more befitting a sports bike. The fuel tank is rounder and the rear end has been transformed to become more harmonious and sharper.
with a top-notch chassis, an improved engine base and renewed aestheticsthe third and final 850 Le Mans is ready to take on its European and Japanese rivals.
