presentation of the 1000 S 1989
Some motorcycles that can now be described as vintage have left an image far removed from commercial reality. The Moto Guzzi 1000S is one of these. True, this "S" isn't the best-known Guzzi, far from it. However, with 47 units sold in France between 1989 and 1993 (total production 1,360 motorcycles), this bike has made a lasting impression on enthusiasts.
to achieve this, the Mandello del Lario-based company blended the genes of 2 myths, the mecanic base of the sporty 1000 Le Mans IV and the aesthetics of the 750 S3 from the '70s, to obtain a sporty-retro-viril roadster with Guzzi flair.
the chassis and engine are taken entirely from the Le Mans. The Tonti frame, Koni suspension, all-round braking and 948cc V2 (2 valves per cylinder) develop a whopping 82 hp. This model comes as standard with the same alloy wheels as the sporty model, but as an option, it can be fitted with a beautiful pair of spoked rims, much in keeping with the beast's aesthetics.
in this respect, the 1000 S echoes the attributes of its predecessor, the S3. A fuel tank that seems to rest on the V2, very flat, angular side plastics, a chrome headlight, a thick, long seat in line with the oil tank and, above all, an evocative color: deep black with a bright orange stripe. Other countries will also be entitled to a slightly sadder, less conspicuous green ribbon.
once in the saddle, this Guzzi gives just as good a feeling as the Le Mans. The big V2 is not stingy with good vibrations and delivers copious revs, fuelled by the 2 big 40mm Dell'Orto carburetors. It propels the bike to over 200 kph without forcing it, but prefers to attack on country roads. On this playground, the small-section tires give the bike a certain manoeuvrability, compensating for the Tonti frame's natural propensity for stability. The full braking system is reassuring and quickly becomes indispensable: a pleasure bike with a rather virile character.
and it's these qualities that have kept the "S" from falling into oblivion. At the time, the company's financial difficulties and the strong Italian lira never allowed sales to take off. All the more desirable today.
