NewsYamaha: first carbon-neutral factory renovated in Japan

Yamaha strengthens its commitment to the environment with ambitious initiatives for sustainable production. The Japanese manufacturer has just transformed its robotics site in Hamamatsu, on the island of Honshū, into the brand's first totally carbon-neutral factory.

This consolidation marks a major turning point: the site now brings together offices and factory, previously scattered over three separate sites. Occupying a surface area of 60,000 m² and employing around 700 people, the center has become a model of eco-responsible production and embodies a far-reaching green strategy in line with the objectives of Yamaha Motor Group's "Environmental Plan 2050".

Yamaha Robotics: towards carbon neutrality by 2035

Yamaha Motor Group had initially set a target of carbon neutrality for all its production sites by 2050, but the manufacturer recently brought this target forward by 15 years to 2035 for its own factories. This strategic shift at Yamaha, accompanied by an acceleration of green initiatives, aims for a 92% reduction in production-related CO2 emissions compared to 2010 levels.

The Hamamatsu Robotics Plant, which has been undergoing expansion and renovation since January 2023, plays a central role in this effort: the 60% expansion of office space and 80% expansion of production areas has doubled manufacturing capacity for SMD report machines and industrial robots. The site now runs on 100% electric and decarbonized energy, making Yamaha's first all-electric, carbon-neutral site a reality.

Robotics plant: the cornerstone of an ambitious plan

The installation of solar panels on the new infrastructure ensures partly autonomous and clean energy production, making Hamamatsu an emblematic site in Yamaha's journey towards decarbonization: "To reach our target, we need to reduce our emissions by 3% every year. We must redouble our efforts", says the manager.

The transformation towards sustainable production is accompanied by concrete measures to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Yamaha favors alternatives such as hydrogen and electricity for its energy-intensive industrial processes, such as molding and painting. In addition to reducing the carbon footprint, this transformation helps to prolong the durability of equipment and provide a pleasant working environment for employees.

100% electric: a long-term vision for the two-wheeler industry?

This project is part of Yamaha's medium-term management plan for 2022-2024, aimed at increasing production and service capacity for the industrial robot market. By combining environmental objectives with sustainable growth, Yamaha is adapting to a rapidly changing market, increasingly oriented towards environmentally-friendly technologies. The company is striving to reconcile industrial performance with ecological responsibility, paving the way for other players in the motorcycle and automotive sectors and actively participating in the transition to a low-carbon society. Next step: the introduction of electric motorcycles in the Yamaha range?
