After several months of investigation, the Gendarmerie has put an end to the activities of a team of serial motorcycle thieves operating in the eastern Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Four suspects, based in the Grenoble area, were arrested in early November 2025 on suspicion of being responsible for a wave of two-wheeler thefts, specifically targeting top-of-the-range BMW 1200 GS and 1250 GS models.
An alarming phenomenon of serial thefts
According toFrance Bleu, between June and October 2025, nearly 35 motorcycle thefts were recorded in Isère, Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Drôme and Ardèche. This phenomenon, which has become a real issue for law enforcement and the region's tourist image, was characterized by two major common features: all the bikes stolen were BMW GSs, and they were systematically stolen from hotel or garage parking lots in highly touristy areas.
The thieves targeted a model particularly prized by motorcycle travelers for its average price of around 25,000 euros: the BMW 1200 GS (or 1250 GS). The team's modus operandi, described as highly organized and skilful, was sophisticated. The criminals used electronic devices, exploiting well-identified security loopholes on the BMW GS, to seize the machines at night. In some cases, the bikes were simply loaded into vans.

Mainly foreign victims
The investigation revealed that the victims of these thefts were mainly foreign tourists, including Germans, Swiss, Spaniards, Italians and Luxembourgers on long-haul trips. In addition to the colossal material loss, this type of delinquency causes considerable damage to Alpine tourism.
Grenoble's public prosecutor emphasized the negative impact of these repeated thefts on the country's image. These machines were then easily resold on the parallel market. Of the forty or so alleged thefts, only five motorcycles were intercepted and returned to their owners.
Gendarmerie intervention and arrests
Thanks to the installation of video surveillance devices from the very first thefts, investigators were able to trace the team. Gendarmes from the Isère departmentarrested four young men, aged between 21 and 24, all living in the Grenoble area. Two of them are of Macedonian and Kosovar origin.
Three of the suspects were remanded in custody, while the fourth was placed under judicial supervision. Only one of the men arrested has admitted to the offences. They will be tried in court on December 30 for organized theft and aggravated criminal conspiracy, a sentence which reflects the seriousness of these serial thefts.
This intervention by the Gendarmerie marks a majorstop for this industry, sadly reminiscent of a previous case in September 2023, when five men had already been arrested in flagrante delicto for thefts of similar BMW R 1250 GSs.
