The Japanese watchmaker Seiko is adding a new model to its 5 Sports Field collection, developed in partnership with Honda. The watch pays homage to the Motocompo, an iconic foldable mini-motorcycle from the early 1980s.
At the time, the Japanese manufacturer developed this 42 kg (dry weight) mini-motorcycle with a specific logistical goal in mind. Equipped with a 49 cm³ two-stroke engine producing 2.5 chevaux, it was designed to fit into the trunk of the Honda City, a compact car launched at the same time. To make this transport possible, the Motocompo featured retractable handlebars and footrests, as well as special sealing devices that prevented fuel, oil, and battery acid from leaking once the motorcycle was laid flat. The concept aimed to offer a mobility solution that combined car travel with urban two-wheeled transportation.
A Literal Aesthetic Interpretation
The design of the new Seiko 5 Sports model literally echoes the vehicle’s visual elements. The dial features the characteristic yellow of the original bodywork, bisected by a wide black central band bearing the automaker’s logo. At the 6 o’clock position, the word “AUTOMATIC” uses a typeface specifically modeled after the original Motocompo logo.

The homage extends to the watch’s functional elements. The crown is engraved with the word “TURN,” replicating the appearance of the motorcycle’s fuel tap. The strap, meanwhile, features the inscriptions “CARRYING POINT” and “INSERTION POINT”—markings that appeared on the motorcycle to indicate the attachment points when securing it in the trunk of a car.
The watch, whose case back is numbered and stamped with the silhouette of the motorcycle, comes in a box that replicates the look of the corrugated cardboard used to ship Motocompos when they left the factory in 1981.
