Buying a motorcycle the same way you’d buy a drill or a pair of socks—right between the apples and the bulgur salad? It’s a strange idea, but a great marketing stunt by Lidl. Since September, the discount retailer has been offering a Prike 125 PXA Adventure in its online catalog. A small trail bike with roadster-style features (or vice versa) that only German customers will be able to enjoy. A good deal? Not so sure…

Cutting-edge technology

The PXA looks pretty exciting at first glance, with its compact, upright styling. The design is edgy, taut, and a complete contrast to the engine. You’d think Prike had scavenged parts from a stockpile still bearing East German badges. Not in a hurry? Neither is this bike. Its small single-cylinder engine produces just under ten chevaux, which has to propel a mass of 152 kg. Performance and handling will therefore be modest. The bike has a top speed of 85 km/h. Don’t even think about taking it onto a highway. On the bright side, fuel economy is rated at 2.3 l/100 km.

Not much power, air-cooled, basic chassis—the bike doesn’t hide its origins. Like many “mail-order” and rebadged motorcycles, the PXA was built in a Chinese factory. But this is a China of a bygone era; it’s been a while since the country’s major brands have been offering much more modern mechanics and solutions.

But where does “Prike” come from, anyway? It’s a brand distributed by Kärcher—a well-known and respected name. But Kärcher isn’t the one manufacturing this motorcycle. That’s called rebadging. Nothing out of the ordinary (Mash has been doing it for nearly 15 years). Rieju has gotten into it as well…. All this to say that there’s a difference between a “motorcycle made in China” and a “Chinese motorcycle.” The PXA isn’t here to showcase the might of the Middle Kingdom but to offer a practical bike at a “good” price.

So, we’ll mainly be using it for city riding. But it seems like it’s capable of a bit more. The PXA positions itself in the adventure bike segment, is fitted with knobby tires, and boasts an impressive ground clearance of 260 mm—that’s more than an Africa Twin. But why mix spoked wheels with 17-inch rims? A strange combination for an adventure bike.
No ABS on board, but it does have combined braking, a long-travel inverted fork, full LED lighting, and a 15.5-liter fuel tank. Given the bike’s low fuel consumption, you can expect to ride 650 km between fill-ups. However, planning a long trip on the Prike seems out of the question. It’s better to think of this range as the convenience of only having to fill up once a week.

Priced just under 3,000 euros, this motorcycle may seem very reasonably priced; its cousin, the PXS Scrambler, is even cheaper. This, incidentally, aligns with the brand’s values. But for 150 more, a Honda CB 125 F will be much more reassuring (service network, reputation, reliability, resale value, etc.); and a CFMOTO 125 NK requires only a few hundred euros more to get a far more compelling machine.

Why and for what purpose?

Perhaps the Prike PXA 125 Adventure will serve you well. However, it won’t exactly make your life easier. It requires a service every 3,000 km and doesn’t have a dealer network to rely on. Sure, there are Lidl stores everywhere, but the staff there won’t be able to rebuild your engine or diagnose a problem right in the store.
Do you really want it? Don’t forget the registration process for France, some import fees, and German lessons so you can communicate with customer service if you have a problem.

A bluff? A publicity stunt? Think again. The retailer sells a whole range of two-wheelers—motorcycles and scooters, both gas-powered and electric—from brands like Luxxon, Prike, Alpha Motors, Greenstreet, Elektromobil, and Nova Motors… Enough to raise a few questions—questions that only Germans will have to ask themselves. For now?
