presentation of the V-Strom 800 D.E. 2024

In the Suzuki trail bike family, we already knew the small V-Strom 650 and the big V-Strom 1050. Since 2023, Suzuki has had an intermediate version in the shape of the V-STROM 800.

This new model is neither a small 1050 nor a big 6?, but a completely new motorcycle, derived directly from the brand's new roadster, the GSX-8S, whose platform it shares.

gone, then, isthe V-twin to which the V-Strom owes its name; welcome tothe new in-line twin. Despite this change in engine architecture, Suzuki has nevertheless decided to keep the same name, so as not to confuse motorcyclists accustomed to the name.

In fact, the first V-Strom appeared in 2002, with the DL 1000 V-Strom, derived from the TLS 1000 roadster. The following year, Suzuki presented the DL 650 V-Strom, which inherited the SV 650's attractive engine. These two motorcycles, especially the 650 version, cut their own paths and won over a large number of motorcyclists. In fact, the latter's presence in the catalog was never interrupted, while the DL 1000 V-Strom's career was halted in 2007, only to restart in 2014 with a more dynamic version. In 2017, the 650 will model its styling on that of its big sister, with both models now available in different versions: SE or DE for the 1050 and standard, A2 and XT for the 650.

The new V-Strom 800 (available in A2 version) thus makes its appearance in the range in this new DE finish, i.e. its most adventurous version, DE initially standing for Dual Explorer. To help you find your way around Suz' range of trail bikes, the standard version is primarily intended for road use, with its spoked wheels (19" front); the XT version is designed more for off-road use, with its spoked wheels, but still with a 19" front wheel; while the DE version is the most adventurous and off-road of the bunch, with its spoked wheels and 21" front wheel.

And so, the V-Strom 800 makes its intentions clear from the outset, presenting itself to us in a DE version whose main yellow and blue color scheme is an unmistakable reference to the historic colors of the brand's motocross bikes, notably the famous RM 400s of the 1980s, which were the stuff of dreams for generations of motocrossers. The model is also available in grey and yellow, or black and blue... part of the brand's off-road color code.

Suzuki V-Strom 800 D.E. Technically, the 800 DE shares the same platform as the new GSX-8S, and features a 776 cm3 (84 x 70 mm) vertical twin developing 84.3 hp at 8,500 rpm and delivering maximum torque of 7.95 mkg at 6,800 rpm. All of which means a very comfortable and efficient performance at the usual engine speeds. This new parallel twin features 270° valve timing (as on the Yamaha Ténéré 700 and the new Honda Transalp), to deliver a pleasant, V-Twin-like character. The cooling system has been specially designed to ensure rapid temperature rise on start-up, to reduce cold emissions as much as possible, while maintaining optimum operating temperature in all conditions.

In terms of electronics, this new trail bike comes with the same array of features as the GSX-8S, including a ride-by-wire electronically controlled throttle; three riding modes ranging from the most dynamic (mode A) to the softest (mode C)a disengageable traction control system, offering three levels of intervention plus a G mode (for gravel) designed to limit the intervention of the assistance system in off-road conditions, without however disconnecting it altogetheran up & down sifhter for upshifting and downshifting without disengaging the clutch; a simplified starting system, with a single press to start the engine; and Low RPM Assist, an electronic assistance system for low-speed riding. What's more, the 800 DE is also equipped with a limited-slip clutch, a mechanical system that further enhances ease of use and rapid handling.

Suzuki V-Strom 800 D.E. On the subject of handling, the first question that arises when talking about a trail bike with real off-road capabilities is: "Isn't it too high? While this notion is objective in terms of its numerical value, it is also highly personal in terms of its size, physiognomy (short or long legs) and ease of handling (Cyril Neveu or Gaston Rahier, to name but a few, have won the Dakar many times on very tall motorcycles, despite their very small size). The V-Strom 800 DE has a seat height of 855 mm, midway between the 835 mm of the 650 XT and the 880 mm of the 1050 XT.

The tubular steel frame is the same as that of the GSX-8S, but with a reinforced rear frame. The swingarm also differs, as does the geometry of the front axle (28° and 114 mm of clearance, versus 25° and 104 mm), increasing the wheelbase to 1,570 mm (from 1,465 mm on the 8S) for greater overall stability. Naturally, the new V-Strom is fitted with 21" spoked wheels at the front and 17" at the rear, shod with Dunlop Trailmax Mixtour as standard. Suspension is provided by a fully adjustable upside-down front fork and a rear monoshock with hydraulic preload and rebound adjustment only. It boasts 220 mm of ground clearance for easy off-road riding. On the other hand, its 230 kg fully loaded weight is likely to be a handicap off-road, compared with the 204 kg of the Yamaha T7, for example.

Let's end our portrait of this new trail bike, which should be one of the spearheads of the category next year, by pointing out that behind its three-level adjustable bubble, it features an instrument panel with an ultra-complete 5-inch TFT screen, as well as a USB port for powering smartphones and other GPS devices.

In short, the Suzuki V-Strom 800 DE is a pleasant surprise...

Nice but incomplete
French Tocaroto Model 2025
For me, the fuel consumption figures are high as soon as you leave the flat country road at 80kmh in 6th gear. It easily displays between 4 and 7 l/100. Average displayed between 5 and 5.5 l/100. Consider that the 800DE is sold without front lights and bubble, and plan to equip it accordingly when you buy it. Same for the 800SE, presumably. As many people say, the headlight is useless. Get additional headlights. (180 € for me, 500 € for the serious stuff). Since the switch is likely to be under the handlebars, you'll need to buy a riser (50 €, unless you're only doing off-road). The bubble is useless unless you're only doing city riding and off-road. Around €200 for the Givi, not too bad, a little more for the Airstream, even better. Rating : 4/5

dangerous lighting, heat flux on the right thigh, it's unbearable. if anyone has a solution? thank you, have a nice trip Rating : 2/5
French Oxford
Frankly, it's a bit harsh to give such a bad mark to a pretty good bike because the headlights are rotten (which is true, you need to add extra headlights) and because you've had a hot leg (which has never happened to me). Rating : 4/5
French Vara
It's strange, some people complain about the heat generated by the engine (Moto Journal, for example, in the YouTube comparison with the Transalp), while others don't complain at all.
Personally, I tried it in the spring and fall (a friend lent me the bike for a weekend), and I found that it gets VERY hot.
Go figure.
I also find that it vibrates a little at around 5000 rpm.
Other than that, I don't have much to complain about. It's a well-designed, well-balanced motorcycle.

Hi, I got to test ride that famous Suzuki V-Strom 800 yesterday at the dealership. Honestly, it’s a really great bike—I didn’t notice any engine overheating, unlike what I’d read in some reviews. There were a few vibrations, but nothing bothersome. The seat is very comfortable; the windshield is just a bit short, but hey, it’s designed for off-road riding, so we’ll forgive it. In short, this test ride has me thinking about a future purchase—since I’ve only ever ridden roadsters, this would be my first adventure bike. Rating : 5/5
bien, beaucoup de positif, mais peut mieux faire...
French Model 2024
all in all, a very good motorcycle, great comfort, low fuel consumption, a very strong engine despite its weight, powerful and progressive braking, and not too bad off-roading with my low level...but one critical point: the lighting....it's close to zero, it's dangerous, it doesn't light up anything...except for oncoming drivers....2 out of 3 cars flash their headlights! the engineer who came up with this has never ridden a motorcycle at night...and certainly not the DE! I'm almost ready to sell it just because of this, and it's a real shame... Rating : 3/5

French Model 2024
I've just switched from the very good CB500X to the Vstrom 800 DE ten days ago. The car's still limited because I'm still on the A2, and I do around 20,000 kms a year, so I pay close attention to fuel consumption. The rule of three is good. 17.3 X 100 divided by 479 kms = 3.611. Knowing that there are 2.7 liters left in the tank, 2.7 X 100 divided by 3.6 = 75 kms. 479 + 75 = 554 kms. It's true that the ride is supple and the engine hasn't fully developed its segmentation yet, as it's a new bike. The day's route Anduze Ganges Le Caylar via Navacelle A75 exit St Affrique Albi Realmont and return idem except Alzon Le Vigan Refilled tank at St Hippolyte du Fort. Pleasant, torquey motorcycle, incisive in trajectories despite 21 at the front. Very reasonable fuel consumption. Rating : 5/5
V Strom
Hello, I had the opportunity to try out the V Strom and the Transalp on the same day. I was disappointed by the Transalp, so the choice was quickly made, for me it's the V Strom, everything is better than on the Transalp, it just lacks cruise control, I expected better from Honda...! Rating : 4/5

The bike is off-road oriented. The tubes allow you to ride with under-inflated tires, which is impossible with tubless. I've got an 800DE and this bike is incredible! Rating : 5/5
French passe à fond Model 2023
At last, something new. After reading the spec sheet, my opinion is that it's 25kg too heavy, and that it comes in circus-vehicle colors. Let's hope they'll have the good sense to offer a gray and a black model, and as always, the height of the saddle, as the Japanese engineers must be at least 1.85m tall. On the plus side, I've kept 20l of fuel, and the 80hp is more than enough for this category of bike, so let's hope they'll come up with a more suitable version, i.e. a lowered HS with a 19" front wheel. I'm thinking of going for a test ride with a view to changing my 2019 euro 4 V Strom 1000, which gives me great satisfaction, except that at 75 years old I'm beginning to find its weight and volume a handicap for my small brans. With cruise control, I'll buy it. It's not so bad to rest the right hand on double lane transitions etc!!! I don't get it, it's still easy to integrate into the electronics with a fairly low cost of ownership. Too bad. Rating : 5/5
French Alain81 Model 2023
It wouldn't be bad, but Suzuki can't be serious about such a weight for an 800 !!?? 30 kg more than the 700 Tenere !!! Pfff ... Rating : 4/5
French jeffbijou
To answer Alain's question, I had the Ténéré and quickly sold it, as the weight was very high and it was very difficult to lift, which is not the case with the Suzuki. It's very well balanced, and at 1.71 m tall and 67 years old, I've done some off-road training over 2 days, and it will be my next bike for many reasons: its balance ,its smooth and precise clutch which is very useful at low speed ,its torque at low revs (which is lacking on the 2023 Transalp 750) ,the traction control assist functions ,throttle adjustment, abs all on several levels ,its surprisingly easy gravel mode ,the standard quick shiffter ,its off-road protections etc..... The only thing missing is cruise control Rating : 5/5
French Alain81
I've tried it out in the meantime (since my 1st comment) and found it to be quite nice. In particular, I really liked its torquey, pleasant engine... and everything else too, to be honest! I'd be tempted to choose it as my next bike.

Note that I tried the Transalp just after (on the same day) and that I have a preference for the Suzuki.

Try the Tuareg 660, it has the regulator and a very nice engine. I don't know why the Japanese only put this option on the 15.000€ + range :] Rating : 5/5
