Wow! A shocker is on the horizon in the sports bike world. Suzuki is launching this brand-new GSX-10R. A bike that leaves no room for doubt about…. Wait a second! Of course it is ambiguous. For a moment, it was reasonable to think this was a redesigned GSX-R1000, renamed according to Suzuki’s new naming convention. But not at all. It’s neither a new name nor a replacement. The GSX-10R represents a new niche in the manufacturer’s lineup. And perhaps even a new category.

It’s sporty—very sporty, in fact. There’s no doubt about this machine’s intentions; it’s raring to go, from its sharp front end all the way to its narrow passenger seat. The GSX-R DNA has clearly shaped its design and form, translating the hallmarks of the legend into a motorcycle that doesn’t claim to belong to the track-focused family.

Yet you can tell it’s ready to really let loose. Even more so when you realize that the chassis seems borrowed from the GSX-S1000GT, itself a descendant of the GSX-R1000 dynasty. But certain distinctive features emerge more subtly, especially in terms of the riding position. Compared to the big GSX-R, the 10R features slightly raised and wider handlebars, lower-set footpegs, and a lower seat. In short, it’s a bit less radical. But it’s still a far cry from a relaxed Sport-GT-style riding position.

Suzuki hasn’t said a word about this engine’s power, but if it’s based on the GSX-S1000, GT, and GX—just like the chassis—152 chevaux should do the trick. We also expect an electronics package of the same caliber, featuring traction control, a shifter, multiple riding modes, cruise control, cornering ABS, a USB-C port, a 4.2-inch color TFT display, Easy Start, and RPM Low Assist.

In a way, the GSX-10R is taking the baton from the CBR 900 and ZX-9R of the last century and could position itself as a hypersport-GT. It’s a rather unique positioning, but when you (re)think about it, many critics have spoken out against the shift toward radicalism when the R1, ZX-10R, CBR 1000 RR, RSV-R, and other GSX-R 1000s—although the latter was always considered the most user-friendly of the bunch.
