With the 1990 model year, the Hamamatsu-based manufacturer proves that the most important modifications are not always the most visible to the eye. You'd almost think Suzuki was trying to hide the fact that it had released a new model. Indeed, despite the machine's many far-reaching modifications, the bodywork remains the same, except for the color scheme (much to the delight of those who love the line).

in terms of modifications, the most important is a serious step backwards. The 1988 model benefited from an even more super-square engine (bore x stroke = 73.0 x 44.7mm), providing a significant power gain (112hp at 11,000 rpm). This new powertrain failed to convince on the competition versions of the GSX-R 750R. Suzuki, which had backtracked on this version as early as 1989, did the same in 1990 with the standard model.

the 4-cylinder returns with a bore x stroke of 70.0 x 48.7 mm, but that's not all. A new 38 mm carburetor manifold, lighter pistons, a new stainless steel exhaust system and a revised top end deliver 115 hp at 11,000 rpm. And to maintain a high level of reliability despite the extra power, the new equipment includes a larger oil pump and a new curved oil cooler.

the changes to the chassis are much more visible from the outside, though less significant than the engine modifications. The first thing you notice is the all-new 41mm inverted fork (another first for a production bike), which provides extra rigidity and precision to the front axle (which, until now, had not been the subject of any flagrant criticism). Less conspicuous is the fully adjustable rear monoshock, a model with a separate oil reservoir that can be seen on the side of the bike (above the exhaust silencer).

the rear tire width has been increased to 170/60-17 (although it's unclear whether this is for technical or marketing reasons). The brakes are also a few millimetres larger (310 mm at the front with 4-piston calipers and 280 mm at the rear with 2-piston calipers).

aesthetically, the 1990 model (coded L) is surely one of the most successful of the line. The "Upside Down" fork gives it an aggressive look, while the all-stainless steel exhaust system is fitted with a classy bevelled silencer (the bevel suggests that it increases the angle of attack)... a classic hypersport flavour, now one of the most sought-after.
