presentation of the R 125 2024

the R125 gives its all to earn a place on the sporty podium. From the tip of its snout to the electrical connections, it makes arguments that are hard to imagine at this displacement level. For good or for better? Or simply for show? Let's find out.

first and foremost, Yamaha's young sports bike has taken the mimicry of its larger siblings a step further. The headlamps have been tapered even further, offering the stunning look of the R6 and R1... or rather that of the R7, with that luminous globular appendage recessed in the middle of the central air intake.

the R125 has also revised its side fairings, with less sharpened volumes. As if to breathe new life into its little rascal, the manufacturer has redesigned the entire bodywork. Mudguards, apertured and enlarged rear shell, under-seat sides, passenger footpegs, fuel tank, speedometer - only the wheels have survived the changeover.

by the way, today's population has demanding appetites when it comes to digital technology. Yamaha has launched the generalization of TFT screens across its range, at full speed this year. The R125 takes full advantage, with a beautiful 5-inch color panel(the R1 is still at 4.3"). Equipped with Bluetooth, the instrumentation can be paired with a smartphone, enabling the rider to carry out a host of interactions thanks to the Yam app: consultation of on-board parameters, call and message notifications...

but that's not where the cockpit really shines. Between its 127 mm diagonal, it provides information to its rider in two display themes. A "Street" side for foggy mornings, with speed and a segmented rev counter / and the "Track" phase, which corresponds synergistically to the plasticity of this R. The bike is then displayed with a stopwatch, a sportier, programmable bar graph, and a listing that can memorize 25 laps of the circuit. This is where the adrenaline kicks in.

Yamaha R125 but that's not all. The R125 REALLY wants to show that sport is its thing. Not only is it pre-wired for a shifter, but it also comes with traction control as standard, which can be deactivated. It looks great on the CV! But what's the point?

let's not forget that this is a 125 cm3. The marketing argument has to put the machine's performance into perspective. Even though the engine features a VVA variable intake and is one of the most successful on the market, it still boasts only 15 horsepower. Not exactly Razgatlioglu's trademark. Unless the bike is fitted with wooden tires, it will take some strange conditions to trigger traction control.
But that's not the case; these are Michelin Pilot Street tires to hold the floor.

with a new fork crown, R1-inspired controls and a menacing front end, the R125 doesn't spare any of its effects.
However, it retains virtually all of its predecessor's underpinnings. Not to complain, as it benefits from a very good, easy and efficient chassis. The Deltabox steel frame and 41 mm inverted fork know their job, while the 292 mm radial front brake knows how to stop the Yam. However, the wheelbase has been shortened by 30 mm, which should make it even more agile.
The bike also retains its anti-dribble clutch, aluminum swingarm, 144-kilo weight and taciturn color scheme. However, it has lost the brake lever protection. It's anecdotal, but a nice little nod to competition.

l'R de rien, the 125 is now in its fourth generation. Its resemblance to the more muscular members of the family has become more pronounced, and its electronics package follows the same trend. A little too much, perhaps! But it allows it to proudly display its pedigree.
