In 1995, as the golden age of two-stroke sports bikes drew to a close, Yamaha launched a last stand: the TZR 250 SPR.
The ultimate variant in a lineage that began a decade earlier, this motorcycle synthesized all the engineering acquired in competition to offer a road-going version as light as it is sharp, with technical solutions worthy of a true Grand Prix machine.
Racing heritage
Inspired directly by the 250 Grand Prix models, the Yamaha TZR 250 SPR embodies the very spirit of the Japanese two-stroke sports bike: a raging engine, a sharp chassis and state-of-the-art electronics for its time. It's also the latest evolution in the TZR range, launched in 1986 with variants featuring aluminum frames, inverted V-twins and cassette gearboxes.
The SPR (Sport Production Racing) version, introduced exclusively for the Japanese market (code 3XV-SPR), takes exclusivity a step further, using the same base as the SP model, but with targeted improvements for track purists.
Engine & technology
The TZR 250 SPR features a water-cooled, 249 cm3, inverted V-twin engine with valve intake and electronically controlled YPVS (Yamaha Power Valve System) exhaust valve. The engine develops up to 45 hp at 10,000 rpm in its original configuration, but it's common to see it climb to 60 hp unbridled, for a dry weight of less than 140 kg.
A rare feature is the cassette gearbox, which allows gears to be changed without opening the engine block - a solution borrowed directly from racing machines. It's coupled with a dry clutch (another SPR model specificity) offering a better feel and allowing more power to pass through, to the detriment of noise comfort.
Another noteworthy detail: the ignition is reprogrammed on the SPR to optimize the power curve and improve responsiveness at low revs - a real asset on twisty circuits.
Sharpened chassis
The Deltabox aluminum chassis is a masterpiece of craftsmanship: light, rigid and perfectly dimensioned to harness the two-stroke's power. The short wheelbase (1350 mm), aggressive geometry and featherweight make the bike particularly lively, almost nervous when cornering.
The fully adjustable 41 mm Kayaba fork is identical to that of the SP version, as is the rear shock absorber with separate reservoir. 17" magnesium wheels with 110/70 tyres at the front and 150/60 at the rear help reduce unsprung weight.
Braking is provided by two 298 mm front discs squeezed by 4-piston calipers, on a system identical to that of the FZR 400 RR SP, offering exceptional bite, provided the pads remain in good condition.

Defects & limitations
Powerful as it is, the TZR 250 SPR is not without its faults. Its radical design makes it unsuitable for everyday use. Comfort is spartan, the seat is high and narrow, and the track-style riding position can quickly tire.
The engine requires rigorous maintenance: regular cleaning of the YPVS system, frequent ring replacement (every 10,000 km for sporty use), and careful adjustment of the vacuum carburetors.
Original parts are becoming rare, especially fairings, valve boxes and SPR-specific electrical components. The rarity of the model (very limited production in Japan) also makes parts expensive, especially outside Japan.
An icon
Produced in a very limited series, the Yamaha TZR 250 SPR is worth a detour for its mechanical purity, racy looks and incisive handling. It embodies the quintessence of Yamaha's expertise in the 250 cm3 2-stroke category, just before the arrival of emissions standards fatal to this type of engine.
